This is a somewhat peculiar color-by-number book. Before I get into that, I have to say that the unicorns in this coloring book are darling and would likely be well liked by any young unicorn lover who enjoys coloring. Most color-by-number pages are the straightforward ones seen in many color-by-number books. Sections of the illustration are given numbers, and a number key is provided at the bottom telling the corresponding color. In the book's favor, each illustration has 9 colors; I've seen some color-by-number books with far fewer. This book does one thing I don't like to see in color-by-number books: divide large sections of the same number with extraneous lines, cutting up the illustration more than needed. The book also has a few pages where the child will need to figure out which number goes with which color by using addition or subtraction in the color key. The book's subtitle strongly touts this math element, but only a handful of pages have addition or subtraction. This could have been made a stronger element by having more pages with addition or subtraction or by actually having the sections in the illustration with the addition or subtraction (as I’ve seen in another book). As the key's numbers are still lined up 1 through 9, a smart child might not even have to do the addition and subtraction to complete the illustration. Despite these flaws, a child who likes unicorns will still probably enjoy this book.
I received a free digital copy o this activity book, but that did not affect my review.
