The essential guide to sleep from award-winning teenage well-being expert Nicola Morgan, author of bestselling Blame My Brain , The Teenage Guide to Stress and The Teenage Guide to Friends.
Late nights, addictive technology and minds racing with exam stress and friendship it's no wonder the teenage stereotype is tired eyes and sleeping through the weekend. Just like adults, teenagers are sleeping less now than ever before, yet sleep is crucial to our health and well-being. Internationally renowned expert on the teenage brain, Nicola Morgan, tackles this essential subject – asking why teenagers so desperately need a good night's sleep, exploring what a lack of sleep does to their developing brains, and explaining how to have the best sleep possible.
Authoritative, accessible and informed by the latest scientific evidence, Nicola Morgan writes a fascinating and helpful guide for both teenagers and adults alike.
Both reassuring and empowering - for teens and adults.
I like Morgan's style, the way she speaks to her readers. She doesn't humour a teenager, talk down to them, or make herself superior for her training and years of experience.
This is eminently readable and speaks smoothly and relatably to teenagers. It has a handle on the problems young people may experience with sleep, and then gives them information in a great format. With science, quizzes, facts, tips and everyday situations that fit in with typical lives, it will reassure readers that their sleep habits are pretty normal.
And it gives a lot of advice to improve sleep - and importantly, why this is vital, at such a variable and intense stage of their lives.
It has everything you need to understand what sleep is, what it needs to be, how you can make changes if you feel you need to. Adults will benefit from the advice here as much as their children will.
For ages 11 and older.
With thanks to Walker Books for providing a sample reading copy.
A few years ago I read Matthew Walker’s excellent book Why We Sleep and became fascinated with the science around sleeping. Very few teenagers would pick up such an in depth book so I was keen to read this book which is aimed at teenagers but covers much of the same information. The author even refers to Walker’s work.
This is a straightforward explanation of sleep which is easy to read. The chapters are clearly set out so the reader could skip to the information they need, however I would recommend reading it all to get a full picture of the importance of sleep.
A great book for any teen who is struggling to sleep.
I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book is so informative and perfectly organized for an upper middle grade / YA reader that now we're considering having the author do an on-line event. Morgan explains the science of sleep in terms that are clear and relevant to a teen reader. She includes quick, easy-to-complete quizzes along the way to help readers gauge the quality of their sleep. Also included are "super-charged sleep facts" dispersed throughout the book. The tips for sleep hygiene are particularly useful. This would make a fantastic choice for a non-fiction book club read. Highly recommended!
