EXCERPTS FROM THE ORIGINAL In the People We Meet on Vacation, Poppy and Alex are dearest companions from school who have voyaged together each late summer for the last decade. In any case, two years prior there was a fracture in their fellowship, and they haven't spoken since. With Poppy feeling disappointed in life regardless of having her fantasy work, she comes to retreat to Alex. They consent to go on one more excursion, and Poppy is resolved to at long last fix things.
NOTE : This summary wasn't written with the intention of replacing the original book, rather it was made to act as a guide for you to enjoy and understand the original book.
This was my third Emily Henry book, and the first I actually thoroughly enjoyed. Before People We Meet on Vacation, Emily Henry wasn’t for me. Actually, the reason I even gave this book a chance was solely because I wanted to watch the movie!
It wasn’t just about two people falling in love over a decades time, it was about growth, missed chances, timing, emotional baggage, finding yourself and how complicated relationships can be when real life gets in the way.
The friends-to-lovers trope (my favorite trope) was done beautifully. Poppy and Alex felt authentic, flawed, and human, and their history together made every interaction feel layered and meaningful. I loved how their friendship was the foundation of everything. The chemistry didn’t feel rushed or forced, it felt earned.
I loved how much Alex was there for and adored Poppy. We love that in a man. But I also loved how for once, in the end, the ball was left in the woman’s court, and she had to have the life-altering moment of realization and make the bold move to prove her love for the man. Usually it’s the opposite, this was so refreshing and exciting.
The travel aspect added charm and fun, but the emotional depth is what really stood out. Emily Henry balanced humor, vulnerability, and heart in a way that really made you feel connected to the characters.
A warm, easy, heartfelt first read of 2026!

11/23 bro I was so so utterly disconnected from these characters and the book in general it’s not even funny now it could have been because I was practically asleep for the first 5 to 6 chapters, but it didn’t get better after that it’s not like it grabbed my attention once I did wake up, I just did not connect with it at all not one bit and it confused me a lot going back-and-forth in the timeline that confused me now will I probably still watch the show or movie? I don’t know what it’s becoming, probably I understood it enough to watch it but yeah I just I wasn’t with it at all any bit of it I don’t know. There’s just something about her books that I just don’t connect with, probably an unpopular opinion, but I don’t really care. I’m just glad it’s over.
I haven’t really read a straight up friends to lovers book it’s always been Christmas themed or a fantasy, not sure if I don’t like that aspect or just because there’s not much plot or excitement. I didn’t like the back-and-forth in different timelines. I felt like I didn’t really get to know the characters as well as I wanted to or feel moved to emotion or care much. There were some moments I liked but overall this book is not something I’d recommend. I listened to this at 2.5 speed to get through it faster. It just left me wanting more. More plot. More time with them actually in a relationship. Just more overall. I like the bones of it. Maybe I’ll like the movie more… gasp!
Poppy is a vibrant, go with the flow and fun loving character, while Alex is anxious and kind of set in his ways. This book is about two unlikely people becoming friends and making a pact to go on a trip every summer together. It starts in their present day no longer in contact because the best friends were afraid to communicate their true feelings. The book goes between present and past summer trips to show the reader how they actually got to where they were.
I honestly loved these characters. It’s hard not to absolutely love Alex even though he’s very specific about everything.
I added this summary to count as my re-read, what do I think now?
it’s horrible, some banters were funny, but it’s even worse than the first time (two years ago), what’s with the puppy face (second hand embarrassment), and is E.H incapable of writing a woman’s personality that doesn’t revolve around her being short and tiny?
The second star was given bc I actually laughed at some parts, however some jokes were stretched and long and very pretentious, the revelation part took ages -unnecessarily-, and I cringed so hard, that was a very hard one, but thankfully short.
Okay, so. This took me longer than usual to read a 300 page book, I felt as if it was slow going but once I got about half way through it really started to pick up and I got into it. I began to read this summer of ‘25 but didn’t get too far because I got bored. I restarted it because I’ve had it for a couple years and hadn’t gotten around to reading it. I enjoyed it in the long run and I encourage you to stick it out for a really cute love story. I plan on watching the movie today and the actors look pretty similar to what I would imagine they looked like from the book!
Cute and easy read, typical of other Emily Henry’s books that just feel like a warm hug. However I wasn’t that convinced about this love story. Felt frustrated at the end there wasn’t any real resolution to their problems other than just “figuring it out.” Not confident the relationship was actually a good idea or would last haha. Not my most favorite out of the other Emily Henry books I have read.
I personally enjoyed this book, although it did receive some mixed reviews from our book club.
I enjoyed the time jump and it was very interesting to see how friendships/relationships developed over time.
Writing style is enjoyable and the characters are relatable. If you want a sweet and semi short romantic book, this book is fits that bill and its a short read!
I love Poppy’s quirkiness and jokes. I love Alex’s awkwardness and shyness. I love the time jumps learning about their relationship history while seeing it rebuild in real time. It’s a simple, quick, feel-good read for me.
I actually loved this book. Maybe it was bc it was a quick beach read and I needed something easy since the kids were with me, but I really enjoyed this one!
It was cute , took me months to read because I could t get into it but I’m not one to start something and not finish. I loved the ending however it felt like it was too dragged on.
