Appalachian Trail Guide to Maryland-Northern Virginia

Rate this book
The official guide to 95 miles of the Appalachian Trail from the Pennsylvania line, south through the center of Maryland, briefly into West Virginia through Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, and down along the West Virginia-Virginia line to the entrance to Shenandoah National Park. The book includes trail-route descriptions in a unidirectional format and thorough information on the lands through which the footpath winds, all rich in colonial and Civil War history. The three detached maps are scaled at either 1:62,5000 or 1:50,000 with 100-foot or 10-meter contour intervals and elevation profiles.

I obtained this book to scout out backpacking trips for the Boy Scout troop of which I am an adult leader.

We backpacked the AT section in Maryland from Washington Monument SP southward to Crampton Gap in two groups one weekend in November 2016. One group camped overnight at Crampton Gap Shelter and found that the spring there was dry. The other group camped overnight near Bear Spring Cabin and obtained water from the stream that originated from the aforementioned spring.

The Guide's maps were top-notch and its trail descriptions were plentiful and informative. This is not the first AT trail guide that I have obtained and used, but it is my most recent. No one hiking the AT should go without taking along one of these guides in my humble opinion.

>> Per my usual practice, if a publication is a guide I usually do not read it completely as my purpose in obtaining it was to learn about some portion of what it covers, so factor that into whatever I write in my review. <<
