Oh, Lords! Who We Date, Why We Date Them, and What We’ve Learned

Rate this book
Oh, Lords! is about two women sharing their dating stories, dating glories, and the lessons they’ve learned along the way. Oh, Lords! Who We Date, Why We Date Them, and What We’ve Learned is the only book of its kind to discuss dating in the context of archetypes, “Lords”, through the eyes and experience of the authors.

You will meet the Lords: Lord Journeyman, Lord Contradiction, Lord FOMO, Lord Layaway, Lord Self-Absorbed, Lord At Your Peril, Lord Good Guy Not My Guy, and Lord My Guy. These are the men, the archetypes, that litter the landscape of the dating world, and when you see them for who they are, you might start making different choices about who you spend your time with.

You don’t have to be dating to find the humor, insight, community, and reminders of your own triumphs and turning points.

Oh, Lords! Who We Date, Why We Date Them & What We've Learned by Jes Averhart & Terresa Zimmerman is a uniquely fresh and refreshingly witty book about the dating experiences of the authors.

In this book, the authors, Jes and Terresa, talk about their dating history - breaking down men into categorical archetypes called Lords, the lessons they have learned and sharing the wisdom of someone who'd 'been there, done that.' The book is full of funny stories, humorous yet relatable comparisons and honest confessions that provide a keen insight into the process (including pre as well as post) dating scenarios and situations.

I enjoyed reading his book a lot even though I've been out of the dating sphere for over a decade because this book is so shockingly relatable. We all have been there and dating some of the men mentioned in this book (or maybe more than some ;) ) I'd definitely recommend this book to all women readers because I am sure you will find the content outrageously relatable and will definitely have a good couple of hearty laughs at the least! The single women, though, will definitely find this book very informative and helpful.

This book hooked me and I couldn't stop reading. The writing style is fresh and engaging, and the descriptions of the Lords- the archetypes of men in the dating world- were thorough and fun even through heavy topics like relationship abuse.

As a therapist focused on relationships, I would absolutely love to get my clients (mostly young women who date men) to read this book so we can have the common language of these archetypes to help describe the dating patterns they tend to fall into.

This approach is so much more compassionate than other similar books on the market about dating because the authors don't have marriage or even steady dating up on a pedestal- it's more about knowing (and communicating) what's right for you. And whether that looks like openly dating multiple people at once or looking for The One, the point is to be clear and honest from the beginning.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I can definitely relate to some of the Lord's they mentioned and I could probably add a few more. Like Lord Conman who is only out to get your money!

Clever, witty and spot on - this book made me chuckle on almost every page and laugh out loud several times. It's good medicine for the soul; a great way to laugh about the trials and tribulations of dating that are oh-so-relatable. You'll recognize the "lords" you've dated, no doubt!

When someone shares her/his dating experience I always enjoy hearing or reading it. Not that I haven’t dated anyone in my life but it’s that charming moment, childish behaviour, attraction, battles and triumphs, animosity, crush, fun, feeling of hopelessness and at times quirky memories that just come back to my mind.

This book has not only brought back those sweet-sour moments but also some brilliant life experiences, dating cautions, dating glories, and dating storie that these two wicked, smart, ambitious and intelligent authors Jes Averhart & Terresa Zimmerman have shared.

Figuring out their men, categorising them to lords and choosing Mr.Right was not only their prerogative but also a part of living life in their own terms. Their experiences will not only help you to know whether the guy you are currently dating is correct for you but also encourage you to keep your search on as there is no harm in dating a few men and then selecting your true soulmate. I believe going out with a few men eventually makes you learn about men and their nature and their type (yes type!!), whether they are Lord Contradiction, Lord FOMO, Lord self absorbed, Lord my Guy and Lord not my Guy.

The best part of this book is that I got to know about dating agents, really!!! I never knew about it before. In short their message begins after the connection has been made, and you’re meeting across the table on the first date, in the bed after a one-nighter, or on the couch of the heartbreak.

A very very interesting reader friendly story that will make you smile all the time. It’s kind of a chat show between two bold women and I just loved it.

Review: “Not all relationships will lead to marriage. Some will help you discover new restaurants.” The recent book that I read is called “Oh Lords! Who we date, why we date and what we’ve learned”, and it is one of those books that anyone, single or dating, can relate to. The two authors are discussing about their experiences dating, and being in a relationship. Talking about being in love and being heart broken. What they find attractive in their partners, what they dislike, and the reasons why they separated paths. Most importantly, the book is filled the very important life lessons that they learnt along the way. The book has instances of all the fun they had dating and all the tough and rocky times as well.

📚This has been one of those books that I have not only enjoyed reading but also gained something very important from. It is true that dating can be difficult and finding the right person for yourself can be next to impossible, but I have learnt to value myself first and gathered a few tips and tricks about the dating game through this book. The book is funny, satirical and optimistic in tone, full of positive affirmations

📚I would recommend the book to all, as everyone can gain a good advice or an important lesson in between the pages, be it single people or those in relationships. This book was entertaining, refreshing and inspiring for me. Grab your copies today to gain some important life lessons and don’t forget to share with your friends.

The book is well written. It just isn't something I'm interested in at this time in my life. I think it would be a great read for younger women. I did see many of my habits in their stories as well as the men I've dated.

This book was the brunch date with my girlfriends I didn’t know I was missing out on. The truth and transparency was needed and I resonated with almost every “Lord” described in the book. I love how the authors not only provide the reader with information and words of wisdom they also give first hand accounts of these men in the wild. This is a fun read for those looking for a quick quirky book to get lost in. Great conversation starter for book clubs or to gift any lady looking for a dose of reality in regards to relationships. I read this book with the This Browne Girl Reads bookclub and look forward to learning more about the two authors!

Oh, Lords! Who We date, Why We date them, and What We’ve Learned by Jes Averhart & Terresa Zimmerman is one of its kind. The title of the book gives a brief overview of its content. It is a book detailing the intimate relationships the authors have been involved in, the kinds of men they have been with in the past, and the lessons that can be gleaned from those relationships. They called these guys “Lords” and classified them into various categories. Lord Layaway, Lord FOMO, Lord at-your-Peril, and Lord my Guy are just a few examples. Jes and Terresa highlight their unique behaviors and personalities, as well as their unique experiences with these lords, which make them fit into various categories.

The good thing is that we can find the experiences people face with their partners in most of these lords if not all. Consequently, readers should know that there will be no room for tasking their brains as to what category their partners or exes may fall into. Furthermore, as much as these lords may seem to overlap, I can assure readers that all they have to do while reading is nod their heads in agreement with the information therein. As a result, it will be easy for readers to determine which men may be dangerous to be with or may not just be good for them. Also, you will get insights into why your relationship is going a certain way.

As much as the level may differ from country to country, women, over the years, have somehow built a reputation for settling for less than what they want. I love the various lessons in this book. Stating them all may lead to exceeding the word limit. So I will try to be conservative with them.

Most of the time, going for what you want is the only way you can attain true happiness. This book teaches women to go for their heart's desires. For instance, if you do not want to be in an exclusive relationship, the best approach is to inform the other person to ensure you guys agree. This was evident in the life of Jes. Furthermore, readers get to understand the disadvantages of going for what is not good for them. An example is the effects dating a "Lord at-your-Peril" had on Terresa.

Sometimes, we just need someone to say what we are thinking, just to be validated, or to put it in a better way, to be encouraged to act in a way that is best for us. I loved that the authors, through this book, could help readers take a bold step in their relationships.

I thought long and hard about what I might have found distasteful in this book, but no negative comment seemed to come forth. In fact, this is one of the best books I have read in a while. It was exceptionally edited, as I found no errors. Aside from the helpful information I now have in my armour, the conversational style employed by the authors made it even more appealing. By now, I am sure you will be guessing the best rating for this book. You probably guessed right. It is five out of five stars.

When it comes to the audience to recommend this book, women first come to mind. However, other categories of individuals interested in relationships can find the information in this great piece very relevant as well.

I'm happily married. BUT... it wasn't so long ago that I was dating. This is a funny and cool read. It breaks apart the male archetypes that we run into on the dating scene.
