There are many things that make a book good. The plot, characters, writing, and the emotions it evokes. I can confidently say I haven’t read a book like Tear Me Down. It’s difficult to put into words how I feel about this book because it’s truly exceptional.
Tear Me Down by Ruby Medjo is a sci-fi, slave romance set over 100 years into the future in what is presently known as the United Kingdom. Erathians came to Earth many years ago fleeing a dying planet. These beings are like humans, but superior in almost every aspect. They took over and set out to make their new home a better place. In their world, humans are taken and kept as slaves. Olivia Donne, 18-year-old human, has lived for years surviving in the wild staying safe from the dangers that surround her. She crosses paths with Paxton Harper’s Erathian ranger platoon and is taken. This event catapults Pax and Liv’s unique relationship as Erathian and human, master and slave.
Tear Me Down is one of the most thought-provoking books I have read. Ruby Medjo addresses topics such slavery, manipulation, respect, and consent in a manner that forces you to consider the feelings of the oppressed and the oppressor in this situation. The underlying topic of slavery is not pretty and we see the dark, ugly aspects of it in this fictional world through the eyes of Pax and Liv.
Pax is a dominant, protective, alpha male who can’t help his attraction to the intriguing Liv. Liv is feisty, loud-mouthed, sassy, and willing to do anything to secure her freedom. These characters are different in virtually every single way, but they connect on an emotional level and due to their pasts. I loved seeing the character development of both Pax and Liv through this book as their relationship progressed. At one point they saw each other as the enemy, but grew to become friends, cohabitants, and ultimately lovers. The gradual progression of their romance and effect it had on both characters’ development is conveyed multiple times in this book.
The world-building is fantastic and Ruby Medjo has done an outstanding job revealing information about this world and these characters in bits and pieces. The portrayal of both Pax and Liv and their emotions is mind-blowing. Pax possesses the knowledge of the world while Liv is naïve in these matters. Repeatedly we see these character traits come up in the book through these characters' emotions, actions, and thoughts.
Overall, Tear Me Down had a unique, interesting, and engaging plot that was written very beautifully. I loved this book so much and I’m not sure my review has done it justice, but I’ve tried because this is a book you do not want to miss. As someone who primarily reads romance and doesn’t read very much sci-fi, this book had the perfect amount of action, romance, and humor I was looking for.
Tear me down really surprised me as a sci-fi slave romance novel as it is staged a good bit in the future. It preserves the realistic beautiful qualities of the earth while addressing some difficult topics like slavery & discrimination that are timeless. What initially drew me to it was the beautifully woven words that hinted of an exciting adventure waiting to be unwrapped by the reader's eyes. This is not your typical romance novel. It is so much more.
The main characters: Pax-a dominant, strong, serious, by the book, and broody male appears cruel and mean at first and Olivia -a weak, innocent, jaded, feisty, and spirited female appears angry and hateful. Throughout the story, Ruby artfully develops the layers of their personality through different encounters-both good and bad as their unique relationship develops and blossoms. I literally felt connected to the characters as I got to experience their growth and development. This story took me through a range of emotions as I could view these characters as people I cared for. I also enjoyed the supporting characters very much as well as the detail put into their roles added to the overall story. I so loved being able to picture the characters as they grew into better versions of themselves and as more of their backstories were revealed. As they learned more about one another and as the storyline developed, Pax and Olivia evolved from mutual hate to a love that makes your heart ache.
This is a nail-biting emotional roller coaster of a book that ticks all the boxes for a good plot while meeting the expectations of a good romance novel. The romance scenes are tasteful & will not disappoint. This is a must-read for anyone who loves a good action-filled story with enjoyable romance. Ruby’s writing is descriptive, humor-laced, and very on point with the difficult topics covered in her writing. Her characters exemplify the beautiful & misunderstood as well as the dark and ugly. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it will be a permanent addition to my library.
As the author, of course I’d give my own baby five stars!!! If you enjoy enemies to lovers, age gap, slow burn, sci-fi romance for those who won’t normally like sci-fi—then this is the book for you!!! The writing is simple, the concepts are deep, and Pax and Liv will (hopefully) steal your hearts! Happy reading!!!
