Time is again running out for the Bright Lord and those he loves. 'To kill a god, you must become a god,' echoes in Tytan’s mind. There's only one problem... To save everyone, to achieve apotheosis, Tytan must first die. For good.
I enjoyed the heck out of The Bright Lord. I went into it pretty blind, I saw that it was narrated by a narrator I really like and the story at a very high level seemed like it was up by alley (I try not to read the full synopsis so I can go into the book blind). But this one surprised me. It had me stuck to my seat waiting to see what happened next.
Now, this one will be hard to review without spoiling anything, but the training scenes along with those following just after (where he tells certain people) followed by more and more people finding or figuring it out were really what made this special. I think trying to learn things again (when you’ve forgotten more than anyone can train you) was interesting too.
Knowles does a great job writing both a story that flowed and one that I didn’t want to stop reading, but they also did a great job writing characters that I cared about. Ryan was awesome, but the people that he pairs up with along the way really made this book fun.
Throw in the great narration by Steve Campbell and you have an audiobook that I absolutely flew through. One that if you’re looking for something new to try, I recommend grabbing this one. I can’t wait to see where this series is going to go.
Book Two: The Bright Retaliate
Fantastic Story
5 out of 5 stars
I love books like this, but not all of them are for me. I’ve read a few series like this one and while some of them have the video-game-like elements that are first and forefront (you get sucked into a game, or you KNOW you’re in a game). Where, with The Bright so far, they are there (setting up skills based on skill points earned) but it’s more in the background. The Bright series has absolutely got my attention and I’m really intrigued where Knowles is going to take it.
In Retaliate we learn more and more about each character and find out a lot more of the secrets from this world. We are also treated to some romance and some kinship between some of the characters that was a really nice break in the breakneck pace of some of the action scenes.
One of the best parts of this is that even though it’s a book two, we still get a nice story arc. You can tell there’s a larger and longer arc for the series – but this book itself read like its own story and had a beginning, a middle, and an end. (I mention this because a lot of book two’s seem to be just a “to be continued” kind of story without any kind of ending).
The narration by Steve Campbell is also great. There was a choice he made for one of the characters that at first I was confused by, but I actually went back to figure out why he did that and I think it made sense. It was a bit raspy at first and kind of pulled me out of the story, but then I realized it was a good choice and it stopped bothering me. I wanted to point it out because Campbell is an excellent narrator and sometimes you have to trust their choices. Bray did similar things in the Hell Divers books and they’re some of my favorite moments in those books.
Overall, Retaliate was an excellent book and a great addition to this series.
Book Three: The Bright Fight
Excellent Character and World Building
4.5 out of 5 stars
I can’t believe that I started and finished this yesterday. I had a migraine and I was having trouble focusing on anything, so I thought I’ve enjoyed this series so far, let’s put it on and see how it goes. I didn’t expect to look up at almost 2 am as the end of the book played. Knowles really knows how to grab my attention and keep it for hours on end.
The Bright Fight was another great book in this series and one that I obviously enjoyed since I finished it in one day. I know that some people aren’t a fan of shorter books like this, but when you read as much as I do, I need books that jump around in length so that I can split up the stories and remember them. I also need a “win” from time to time, and by that, I mean a shorter book that I can get through quickly. Knowles has provided that but hasn’t held back on any of the action or entertainment. I’ve gotten more of that out of The Bright series than I have out of 18-hour stories.
The thing I’ve called out in the first two reviews was Knowles’ ability to create and make interesting characters. Now, we’ve met most of the people in The Bright Fight, but we were introduced to a new character in this one more than halfway through it. And once this specific character was created, I instantly felt like I was transported to the Dragon Mage and Clockwork Chimera words created by Scott Baron. I know part of it was because I was tired but suddenly I was like “wait, this really reminds me of the world that Baron built“. Now, I say that because of a specific character that was introduced and because I haven’t read a world that was as well described as that one in a while – but it’s high praise in my eyes.
The Bright Fight wasn’t action-packed but it wasn’t lacking either. Knowles did a good job of going through the personal stories and introducing some more lore into this world. I could tell that things were going to be winding down in some ways and amping up in others. I like that and I thought that the ending, even though it was still a bit of a cliffhanger, was excellent and leaves things in a place where I could write my own ending in my head, or better yet, continue on with this series as Knowles writes them.
