Friendship comes from the most unlikely places and people. It comes or presents itself in the most fortunate moments we may need it.
Ice-Tea with Millie James was an interesting read. While reading this book, I found that miss Mille was a woman of class yet, because of her love for her child she let herself be taken advantage of severely. She let the criminal life her son lived, the bad path he choose to take affect her severely by blaming herself for it. It only took a strangers visit to bring about changes that's should have been taken long ago. When Cora Sue turned up on Millie's doorstep I first thought here's comes the consequences of her husband's discretion years later. Yet, seems that her son had no feelings of love towards his mother when he sold her house to strangers so he can save himself out of debts he placed himself in. The story is filled with mystery, betrayal, love, hopefulness and amazing friendship. Despite all what happened miss Millie gave good advice to Cora Sue who also had a kind heart and also returned some good advice to Ms Millie despite what she was encountering in her relationship with her man & mother. All in all, things turned out good for all of them as a family with built on good friendships.

There are consequences for actions and we all have a price to pay. Just make sure that you can afford what your actions have cost you. I am sure that Millie along with everyone else in this story will agree with me. It's funny how a stranger pops up on Miss Millie's verandah and not only opened such a huge can of secrets, lies, racism, and revelation. But, this 'tanned' girl changed Millie's life completely. And I loved every minute of it. Page by page, chapter by chapter, I was laughing, smiling, gasping. Heck, I even got mad at Jaxon a few times. It

To read and enjoy this story the reader must be prepared to change his feelings and his reactions as the story goes along. At no point does the author lead us to believe this is an autobiography yet this story is America's story twisted whichever way one wants to twist it.
The author develops the characters as the story goes on. We, the readers, have a chance to be angry with almost all the main characters at some point as they fall prey to being humans and display the flaws of us humans.
I wonder how many pages the book would have been if everyone was honest from their introduction into the story . But it is this human weakness that enables the development of the story to the point where a very unusual behaviour( the mixed race family) evolves.
Yes, it is fiction but there is enough in this short story that we can digest and consider how we might change our behaviours. I am a fan of teach it not preach it. I would invite this thoughtful author to give us more...and more. Her work is very valuable at the present time.

The story of Millie James is simultaneously sweet and poignant. It is conversational and direct and offers. A view of life different from my own and very valuable in its telling. Ms. Riley has done a wonderful job of revealing the perspective of an 82-year-old African-American woman while also telling the perspective of people of color of all ages. It was challenging to reflect on the possibility that my views may be considered biased, and I pray not. The issues Millie has with Jaxson are experienced in so many families, and we hope to love them through their issues. Too many times, they are overcome by them and pay a heavy price. The issues Cora May has with Seth are also far too common. Some day, it has to get better.
I enjoyed seeing the strong, wise matriarch with the answers and the ear to listen.
I enjoyed reading this short novella, but it gave me cause to pause and consider much more than I expected when I started reading it. Well done Ms. Riley!

This was a nice quick-read novella that I felt could have been longer and delved deeper into the characters of the two main protagonists, Millie and Cora Sue. I thought there was so much more that could be said, especially, Millie, an eightysomething-year-old black woman living in the ‘South’, and I wished she was explored more. However, there is a folksy quality to the writing which I enjoyed, with lots of telling that suited the novel. The message is powerful and universal—racism and cultural differences—as well as love and betrayal, and all make for a powerful mix. I enjoyed the author’s style as much as I enjoyed many of the conversations that take place, and the book describes a world that I feel is probably gone or going, where people sat and discussed things on their porch while drinking iced tea and wearing hats.

Millie loved a simple life after the death of her husband Willie Lee. Her son has chosen the wrong path which led him into a life of crime and Millie blamed herself for this due to a strict upbringing. After a stranger came to visit, Millie's life took a turn but who was she? There are serious undertones to this story, as the author touches on racism and cultural differences but also the unconditional love of a mother. Encompassing mystery, betrayal, love without boundaries and jealousy, this book has a story that is easy to read and flows well. There are some editing issues which, once corrected, will bring the book up to the level it deserves. However, this short story is well worth a read!

Feisty Mama Millie
This is a great little story that touches on some tough topics. Mama Millie tried her best with her son but he does the unthinkable. The upside is that Millie makes a great friend out of the betrayal and they are able to move past it and become a wonderful family.
I really enjoyed this story. The characters were great and who doesn’t love a feisty elderly woman like Millie?! I want her to be my mama because she seems to be so much fun.
I look forward to reading more from the author.

Millie James, or Mama Millie, as her new best friend likes to call her, has enjoyed a simple life since losing her husband, Willie. She also likes to keep to herself because her son Jaxon has chosen a life of crime, and she is ashamed of him, wondering if, in some way, she is to blame. Mama Millie strikes up an unlikely friendship with Cora Sue, a surprise caller to her door. However, as the story develops, it seems their meeting was not a chance encounter after all, and Cora Sue’s visit could change both their lives forever. An enjoyable short story.

This book is written like a story in a slow rhythmic way (more telling than showing) but it suits the story.
An unbelievable meeting between a young woman and an old lady who immediately become best friends. The story then worms its way around the pasts of the two ladies and why there is this sudden attraction between them.

This was a cute story about a friendship between a young woman and an elderly woman who quickly become best friends. The women share stories about their past relationships and past experiences. It was a quick read and easy to follow, but I felt like the sudden friendship was unrealistic and sometimes felt forced. I loved the premise of the story, I just wish the character arcs were a little deeper to make the characters more believable.

A fun book
I enjoyed reading the story, Ice-tea with Millie James!: Unllikey-Besties, by author, Sparkle Riley. The story was well-plotted, and for me, a very satisfying ending. The characters were fully developed, and the storyline intrigued me. The story was easy to follow. I see it takes place in the south. I enjoy learning about different cultures. I now have a hankering for black-eyed peas and collard greens. If you enjoy a good story, pick up this book!
