For Evelyn Diazal, that’s an understatement. Fresh out of the academy and on her first ship, Evie is quickly picked out of the crowd and handed what seems like an impossible assignment: infiltrate enemy territory without being seen and return with data vital to the future of the Coalition.
All seems to be going according to plan at first, but there is more happening in the Paraganthi Alliance than anyone has told her, and she’s not the only one after the data. She’ll soon discover she’s way in over her head with no way out, and the water is only rising…
Bestselling author Eric Warren has loved stories all his life. And despite writing from a young age, it took him a few years to realize being an author was what he wanted to do for a living. Today, he is the author of over twenty novels, including the highly successful INFINITY'S END series. Never one to shy away from what he loves, he plans to continue writing for another century, depending on the viability of life-extending technology.
I enjoyed reading this second story of a series because the characters were easily imaginable and the main character was extremely likable. Although she is portrayed as human, there are a few times that hints of her being more than just human. The plot does not seem totally probable yet does seem possible. Anyways I did like it and am starting on the next in this series.
The second in this wonderful series giving us early significant stories of the characters we know and love in the author's 'Infinity's End' series. This one is about Eve, our own Evelyn Diazal.
Evie's always been gallus, and she certainly shows it here as a youngster. Just out of the academy and she's ready, willing and able to do anything to climb up the ranks quickly. Evie's picked out from the rest of the newbies and given a lone assignment that would completely finish off any other person. However, she's not given all the information she needs and, as a result, has to fight for her life when she gets a bit too cocky. Will she find someone to help her in this less than friendly place? I think so...
For Evelyn Diazal, that’s an understatement. Fresh out of the academy and on her first ship, Evie is quickly picked out of the crowd and handed what seems like an impossible assignment: infiltrate enemy territory without being seen and return with data vital to the future of the Coalition. She takes on more than she can chew but will she be successful. Or will her mission end in disaster. Get the book and read on to find out how good this book is.
Received as an ARC, this is an honest review. Newly minted Coalition officer ensign Evelyn Diazal had her career planned out and her first assignment aboard the USCS science vessel Obel was suppose to be a stepping stone to a brighter future. But an eloquently planned "emergency" by Captain Beyett that allows Evie's knowledge and readiness to shine through, changes everything as Beyett sees Evie's unique upbringing as an asset to accomplish a mission into Paraganthian space to retrieve from Ruumal extraordinarily important data to the Coalition. The clever disguise that Evie's dawns to mask any alliance to the Coalition along with her species allows her to embrace the persona of a mercenary that gives her a needed strength as she kills time inside and out the streets of Ruumal's capitol city, Chrysalis awaiting the meeting with the mysterious informant. But it also makes Evie reckless that brings about harrowing consequences and pivotal encounter with young paraganthian girl named Sebel in a moment of crisis that gives Evie a new way to view those surviving upon Chrysalis's streets in the shadow of shining wealth; along with playing a vital role if the mission is to succeed. Sebel also gifts Evie a very mysterious yet special orb as a reminder of the kindness Evie showed towards her. The mission also alters the idealized path that Evie believed she was on and completely leads her to desire a different route that ultimately will make her the Coalition officer she wants to be. The epilogue in this story perfectly delivers exactly why the Coalition sought out the data but brilliantly establishes a unique mystery among the robots that serve whatever the Coalition builds them for... what happens when even they desire something much more? The second installment in the Infinity's End Legacies series is absolutely brilliant in capturing Eve's naivete but with equal fierce determination to prove she deserves to a part of the Coalition itself... helping shape its very future. A poignant read... highly recommended.
I really liked the main Character. She is ambitious and willing to do what it takes to move up in rank in her chosen profession. During her undercover mission, she learns there is more to herself than she realizes. I enjoyed this intriguing story. I thought the world building was good, but the interaction between the characters was my favorite part. I would recommend this book.
I have enjoyed these prequels (although they stand quite well on their own) as I am fan of this universe. The characters are believable and memorable. The protagonist of this book is one of many favorites in the series to follow - which I highly recommend - and getting more of her backstory gives her later development greater depth.
Eric Warren has woven a fantastic universe filled with numerous planets and species (most having their own quirky idiosyncratic ways) that is reminiscent of worlds and aliens found within the Douglas Adams universe - and often, just as funny.
So take off your shoes and prepare to get your socks rocked off in Coalition Space.
A super story, excellent strong female lead, Evie a newly graduated officer is sent on an infiltration mission, I liked that she was fallible had some empathy and compassion but could also kick a*s. I enjoyed the twists and turns in the story. An excellent storyteller I always enjoy Eric's books and this one is no exception. I look forward to the next. I received a complimentary copy from the author and am leaving a honest voluntary review.
Received as an ARC copy, this is an honest review. The story line is not what I was expecting. There was more twists and turns in the plot that kept me guessing what was going to happen next. A very good read and I would highly recommend it to everyone.
This is the 2nd in the Fate’s Arrow Novella series, and this time follows a young Evelyn ‘Evie’ Diazal, the first book having been about Robeaux. This is a book that is an absolute treat for any fans of the Infinity End Saga, as you get to meet a fresh faced Ensign Diazal, straight out of the Academy, and ready for her first assignment. Evie is sent to the USCS Obel, where she is to be a part of the Stellar Cartography team. Thanks to a Captain who both likes to test her new recruits, Evie comes to the notice of the Captain and First Officer, as even in her early years, she is meticulous and detail oriented, and when faced with a crisis, she responds with the calm cool demeanor that we have all come to know of Diazal later in life. The other thing that gets the attention of the senior Crew of course, is the sword that Evie brings aboard, her family heirloom. With all of this, the Captain decides that Evie is the perfect person for a dangerous undercover mission, into Paraganthi Alliance space, out of Coalition and into Sargan territory. The mission is a simple exchange, and Evie is to retrieve some data for the Coalition that they must have. But it is in Paraganthi space, with an unknown hand-off, no back-up, no one there to help her, in an area that executes anyone from the Coalition on sight. It is a very real possibility that Evie’s first real mission, may well be her last. But with the promise of rewards she can’t resist on her return, and an inbuilt trait that tells her to never back down from any challenge – Evie accepts the mission. (We knew this of course, otherwise it was going to be a very ‘very’ short novella!) What follows is Warren at his best, as he takes us on this intriguing journey to the Paraganthi Alliance, and the planet Ruumal, where Evie is faced with a series of situations, some fascinating and interesting, others, brutal and terrifying in which she has to fight for her life. This is a really in-depth look at the first part of Evelyn Diazal’s life, and the resulting impact it had on it for years to come. Evie enters this system, the Esgag system, with a set of objectives and goals, and a particular mindset. But the experiences she has, the journey she takes, will shape her into a different person, altering her Fate, so that she becomes the Diazal that we know and love in the Infinity’s End Saga. Warren has done a brilliant job in creating her character in this book (No spoilers here), in that he has hinted at aspects of her later life, without giving anything away, and in other aspects of the story, he has directly shown us how Diazal has become the person she is, giving us some answers to questions we might have had, and letting us deeper into Diazal’s Character. She is one of the major players in the Infinity’s End series, and getting to learn more about her makes for a really captivating read. She was easily one of my favourite characters (like most of us), and getting to understand her more is just brilliant. The character work, not just Diazal’s, but several other characters, I won’t mention, so as to not give away spoilers, is just exceptional. The quality of the character work, that the story is more driven by the characters, rather than the other way around, makes for an outstanding read. You find yourself becoming attached to the characters, engaged in their actions, and compelled to not only understand them more, but to find out what is going to happen to them. Warren’s descriptive work, whether it be in his world-building, describing one of his characters, or the intricate moves of an intense combat scene, all of them get better with every book, as he is exceptional in his mastery of writing these scenes. His world-building is just glorious, these beautiful, stunning back drops, whether it be an ageing starship, walking along the corridors and feeling like you are in the ship with Evie, to the crowded streets of Ruumal, and being able to see the buildings, the people bustling about, you can even hear the noise of the crowd he builds such a complete picture for you. And the combat scenes are intense, brutal, gritty and realistic, with enough detail so that you can feel like you are watching the fight from mere inches away, almost part of it. The genuine authenticity of Warren’s descriptive work really makes his stories come to life, and that, combined with the extraordinary character writing, creates these stories that you get so fully immersed in, and can lose yourself in the worlds he has constructed for you, and escape reality for a while. This is a really wonderful book, it can be one of two things, it is either a fantastic short story for fans of the series, If you are a fan, you are going to absolutely love this book. The other aspect, is that Warren has been very clever and creative in his writing, allowing for new starters to the series – and as such, they can actually start here, learning about Diazal, without giving anything vital away for later in the series. This is a must read for anyone who loves the Infinity’s End Saga, or just a brilliant Sci-Fi story that fits multiple genres. This is a short story that shouldn’t be missed, that links to a Series that is an absolute Must Read!!
A huge fan of the Infinity’s End series by Eric Warren, I was super excited when he started writing these Infinity’s End Legacy novellas about the main characters of the series. Each novella can be read in any order before, after, or during the books in the series. The first one was about Caspian Robeaux, of course, and this latest one is about Evie Diazal.
In it, we discover Evie’s backstory and how her Coalition career started when she first graduated from the academy. I loved this adventure! She’s assigned on a solo mission to recover a mysterious piece of intel in enemy territory with just her wits and her sword as backup.
If you’re not sure if you’re ready to embark on the 9-book journey that is the Infinity’s End series, this series of short novellas will give you an idea of what you’re in for — intriguing characters, heart-racing action, imaginative space adventures, and just good entertaining fun!
