Rate this book
One hundred villains will enter Grim Island, but only one will be crowned the Greatest Supervillain of All Time. Will it be you?

The latest battle royale video game from Bionosoft promises a crazy cast of villains, over-the-top superweapons, and non-stop action. But when you get sucked into the game, you discover that Grim Island is home to something far stranger than a few costumed baddies.

Young gamers control the action in this new interactive adventure from the bestselling author of Trapped in a Video Game . They’ll use critical thinking skills to solve puzzles, explore hidden areas, and outsmart villains. Then, once they finish the main story, they’ll get a chance to unlock a whole new tale.

Fans of battle royale games like Fortnite will fall in love with the story’s frenetic pace and quirky humor, while parents will appreciate a book that can captivate the attention of their “I’d rather be gaming” kid.

Choose-your-own adventure books are a mixed bag. It can either be a fun and engaging read, or it can bore and confuse you till you sigh loudly, close the book because your brain hurts and shelve it permanently. Unfortunately, this one made me come really close to the latter. In this book, you take on the role of Alpha, a lightning-powered, hyper-armored supersoldier. You and your team are pitted against 96 other costumed foes, with every action you take either leading to a painful death, or your next step in making it to the Endgame and discovering the secret of Grim Island. The only problem? Every time you die, your teammates’ brains are wiped. And all the secrets you discovered together and bonds you made are erased. I felt this book was unfortunately not as good as the two previous entries in the series, because instead of focusing on building a specific story for the book, it builds a storyline featuring a villain called the Builder, which I won’t get too deep into because of spoilers, but I found it very confusing and difficult to keep up with. The ‘Builder’ story also is apparently an overarching story that is linked to all 3 of the books, which just kind of makes it feel like this book doesn’t have its own story at all, and that you need all the other books for the story to make sense. I just thought this one was confusing. 3 stars. If you’re looking to buy an Escape from a Video Game book, I’d recommend you get one of the other ones.

I can see why late elementary-middle school boys like these books. They’re fun, interactive, and have puzzles too. Plus based on a video game similar to Fortnite…what’s not to love from an 11 year old boy’s perspective?!

Son (8) review- “I really liked all the books. They were really fun to read!I’m still working on the code tho but on the third book I’m really close!”

This is the final book in this trilogy, but each one can stand alone. The choose your own adventure and finding a secret code make it way more fun. I totally recommend the series for your video game loving kids!
