I was disappointed. Most of the cartoon feet are white; there’s very little info about prevention, stretches, or exercises; little to no athlete injury prevention, and the footwear advice is basically buy shoes that fit. Oh, and pony up for custom orthotics.

I only read the parts of THE FOOT BOOK: THE CARE AND KEEPING OF YOUR FEET by Todd Edwards and Leslie Johnston that applied to me and skimmed the rest.

I inherited bunions, bunionettes, hammertoes, corns and calluses. Despite having been told that there are no OTC cures for these, I keep looking. The authors make a point of repeating that nothing sold in stores will cure these conditions. Some items might pad a sore spot, but you cannot use corn pads to remove corns, nor can you manipulate your deformed feet to cure bunions, bunionettes, or hammertoes. A wider toe box, flexible fabric around the toe area, proper support, and a properly made orthotic are all most of us can look forward to. Surgery for these is a last resort and no guarantee. Don't let your boss bulky you into wearing bad shoes! I disobeyed ours for years before they allowed comfortable shoes, running shoes, etc.

One thing I know from experience is that you can remove a bit of a callous in order to decrease its effect on your gait, and your podiatrist can shave a corn to get it to a more manageable size. The doctor can also see if a sweat duct in the corn is blocked and causing pain. If so, it can be opened. BUT, there is no cure. All the things the book recommends doing I already do.

Now this is more than a book about my issues. A plethora of other foot problems, their causes, the care that can be offered, and possible help are offered. Diabetes and the foot is also well covered.

The book is easy to follow and presented in a orderly fashion. Each possible treatment is covered and descriptions of possible surgeries are covered clearly. The illustrations are clear and helpful.

I recommend this highly if you would like to know more about any foot problems you may have. The authors stress that some problems may be lessened if they are caught early enough. Despite having gone to podiatrists for over 30 years and wearing custom orthotics, only my current podiatrist noticed my inherited conditions. I now know it's too late to lessen these.

So if foot malformations are in your family, get checked early. I don't know if it will help, but it might work out better for you!

Hi,

I hope all is progressing well.

The Foot Book: Everything You Need to Know to Take Care of Your Feet by Dr. Todd Brennan, DPM, FACFAS, FABPM, and Dr. Leslie Johnston, DPM, contains information about foot health, navigating situations one may encounter with one's feet. I remember deciding on buying then reading the book the same day I decide so for The XX Brain: The Groundbreaking Science Empowering Women to Maximize Cognitive Health and Prevent Alzheimer's Disease by Dr. Lisa Mosconi, PhD, though make the actual purchase of The Foot Book: Everything You Need to Know to Take Care of Your Feet, later. I take care of my feet, and I'm into healthy feet. I read the book to be more mindful of feet health especially considering my future romantic life partner(s) (her lifestyle may require particular attention to her feet). What better support may I be supporting her support(s) well? I like the text and feel like I have a better idea of a/ Podiatric perspective(s) in a/ way(s) that may help me navigate toward a/ healthier parameter(s) of feet/foot health.

Onward and Upward,
Kevin Dufresne

Basic foot information from a podiatrist. Contains less information that you would get from a google search. He advocates that everyone should wear custom orthotics. For any and all major or minor foot issues, the solution is to see a podiatrist. On the plus side, the whole book can be read in an hour.
