Ebony and Jay are best friends and Eco Rangers. When they are asked by the wildlife vets at the wildlife rescue hospital to go out to where a wildfire has been and see if any animals are still there needing help, they are happy to help. It’s hot work and although everything is black they hunt for any animals.
They find a baby ringtail possum and wash it’s hot burnt feet before taking it back to the hospital. They call the baby possum Mira, short for miracle as it was amazing she survived. The vets asked the Eco Rangers to look after Mira until she was strong enough to be released back into the wild, once her home habitat had regrown enough. This becomes a family affair with Ebony and Jay feeding the little possum in a large cage with a pouch in it. Then when the little fruit devouring creature was strong enough they put Mira in the old chook coop at Jays house next door.
They also found a campsite and signs people were still at the closed camping ground when they went to fetch leaves and bracken to make the chook pen ready for Mira. Why would there be people camping out after the bush fire?
This is the third book in the series and I loved how it followed on from the last. It’s another gift for my younger family members for Christmas as it’s entertaining, interesting and the facts provided throughout are delivered as part of the story.
Great work Candice Lemon-Scott who is a trained wildlife carer herself for writing books that will help kids think about how they can help the wildlife and environment.

This is the third in the Eco Ranges environmentally charged series and one of the most salient to date. Despite being conceived and written well before the awful bushfire events of late 2019 / early 2020, this episode of Jay and Ebony’s conservational crusade ironically involves bushland under the siege of wildfires and wildlife under stress.
It also illuminates a less well-featured Aussie marsupial as one of the main characters, a Ring-tailed Possum. Not since Possum Magic have I enjoyed a possum tail so much! Fast-paced and engaging, Wildfire Rescue is perfect for young wildlife warriors keen to make a difference. Highly recommended.
