All the Things: A 30 Day Guide to Experiencing God's Presence in the Prayer of Examen

Rate this book
God did not intend for it to be hard to know or experience faith, hope, and love—everything and anything can reveal God’s loving work in the world. So why does it feel that way?

In All the Things: A 30 Day Guide to Experiencing God’s Presence in the Prayer of Examen, Katie reveals what happened when she opened herself up to an ancient prayer practice popularized by a 16th-century warrior turned priest named St. Ignatius. She found in the Examen that the everyday stuff of her ordinary and messy life was all she needed to know and love God—it wasn’t so difficult after all. All the Things includes 30 readings that show you the numerous ways the prayer of Examen can impact and transform your life—one 24-hour day at a time.

If you long for a deeper awareness of God’s presence, a sense of companionship with Jesus, and a felt experience of the love of God—without wearing yourself out trying to find it—join Katie to learn more about this life-changing and life-giving prayer.

I love this book so much. When there is so much to be anxious about, the Examen has been a helpful practice to stay present, aware of the good and grateful happening around us, and it helps me stay connected to myself and the divine. Katie weaves her story so beautifully throughout the practices and inspires me to stay the course. I couldn't put it down, so I read it all the way through and am now making my way through the daily practices. This is a must-read and helpful tool for anyone who needs help taking soul space for themselves.

As a doubly Jesuit-educated person, I have wanted to love the Examen for over thirty years. Who knew that desire could be fulfilled in just thirty days (besides St. Ignatius, of course)?

Katie Haseltine came to the Examen as an outsider--an evangelical Christian who found "breathing room" in a Protestant liturgical church where she began receiving spiritual direction and fell in love with a prayer form developed by a 16th century Catholic priest, eventually becoming a spiritual director herself. Haseltine's circuitous approach to all things Ignatian is a tremendous gift to readers, because it renders her writing direct and accessible. She's not parroting jargon or even reflexively using insider terminology as someone who grew up in the Jesuit soup might do. In many ways, she serves as a translator--a teacher of "Ignatian for Speakers of Other Spiritualities." Most importantly, every concept she shares is something she has integrated through study, prayer, and practice.

Using thirty different starting points, Haseltine presents as many ways to approach the Examen. She is so beautifully clear: this prayer is not a hurdle to be cleared or a series of boxes to be checked, but a golden opportunity to draw close to the God who loves us by rummaging backwards through our days together. Each chapter includes a personal, practical example of how using a particular angle of approach led her to notice something she might otherwise have missed, and thus to grow in friendship with God.

Another unique component of Haseltine's writing is that she is also an Enneagram coach, accustomed to helping people see themselves more clearly. In her book, as in her spiritual direction work, the Examen and the Enneagram inform each other, but the reader doesn't have to be a devotee to benefit from Haseltine's fluency with this ancient system of nine personality types.

Though tempted to plow through All the Things as soon as it arrived, I forced myself to read it over the course of a month so as to absorb the practice. With my copy now dog-eared and well underlined, I joyfully begin most days with the Examen--and I'm ready to start on Day One again.

I tried to ignore my knee-jerk reaction to writing that revealed an author I could not relate to. Someone who is worried about the discontinuation of her favourite hair products, who offers spiritual advice while advocating for the purchase of a top of the line mattress and who advises we go clean the garage when we're down, lives in a world that is really different from mine.

I've never been trendy. I use but don't think about beauty products. I worry about North American affluence in a world of poverty. Ongoing physical challenges cause, in my life, a cycle of nearness to God during the most difficult times, not the opposite.

That being said, I sense that, at a soul level, the author and I are similar, and many of her practical suggestions were new and stunningly useful to me; I sense that they would transform devotional moments if I put them into practice.

I appreciated the basic idea of this book—to look at how God is working in your life in the last 24 hours. To be specific as to how people have come into your life—or something in nature—or how you have fallen short of what you wanted to be or do.

Practical and helpful resource for someone who wants to slow down and become increasingly aware to the presence of God.
