Why do I even try when books like this exist?

Okay, Untouchable was INSANE. This book was nearing almost perfection (though i felt like the pacing in the beginning was just a LITTLE rushed and some deliveries of plot info was a little too convenient), BUT besides my little nit-picky remarks, DARN this book was solid. Seriously, so so entertaining, and makes you want to slap MC repeatedly and also adopt Nurse forever.

There.
That's my review.
Read this book. It's one of the best in the indie community, if not THEE best.

Just take your five stars

Ill write a review when the tears clear up
--------------------------------------------------
Right, I think that was long enough for my tears to dry up.
Onto a LONG overdue review.

Where do I really start with Untouchable? I went into it expecting a relatively light-hearted found family adventure!
I came out of it with more trauma than the characters and an unsatiated need for book 2.

For a debut novel, this is damn near flawless. And as one of the FEW books to make me tear up, I'd say I have a good enough authority on that matter. (Seriously, MC is merciless).

My main issue with the book comes with the pacing. I felt like the beginning was a bit rushed and could have done with another couple of chapters to flesh out the world and character's (tiny especially) before flinging us into the rest of the plot! But honestly, the rest of the book MORE than makes up for it.
MC not only writes loveable characters, heart-wrenching scenes, but her prose work is impeccable, some of the best, most controlled prose I've read in a long time! I cannot stress enough how much I enjoyed this book.

With books like this, I'm unsure why I try writing my own because something like this is VERY hard to top.

ALSO, Ehrys deserves more love. Yall are sleeping on her.

All in all, this is one strong debut novel from an author I'm looking forward to seeing more from!

Where do I even start with Untouchable?? I'm generally against romance in books, but the way MC's set things up.... beautiful. Just like Nurse and his pretty green eyes.
I'll be honest, I haven't actually read the final version of Untouchable yet (I'm sorry MC I'll get there eventually), but I beta read it, and even in that stage it was AWESOME. The story is fast paced, but not so much so that it's flying at the speed of light. And the characters are wonderful. You'll root for some, simp for some, and absolutely want to dropkick one in particular because she's just plain nasty. Oh and you'll probably cry, just saying.
I should probably do another review straight after I've actually read the full version. That'll happen eventually, maybe. But for now, just read it. For Nurse the pretty boy, if not for any other reasons.
-
I HAVE NOW FINISHED THE NON-BETA VERSION. It is still fricking awesome. I still like Nurse and Tessa of course, though reading it this time around the romance between them felt maybe a little rushed? Which is probably just something I didn't really pick up on the first time around, but also take my opinion with a grain of salt since I pretty much hate romance in general. Tessa and Nurse are just THAT good. Overall though, Untouchable is an awesome book and I HIGHLY recommend it. Can't wait to beta read book two now ;)

Wow, just wow. Where do I start? This book was incredible. Not only do I love the plot and the world building, but the characters? oh man were they incredible. Pending had a large cast of characters, but each one was so unique. Each character was their own person, which should be the case but is not easily accomplished. The humor and wit built into the story just filled the pages to the brim with excitement, surprise, laughter, and swooning. (I mean those green eyes)
This book has easily earned a spot on my top 10 books and I cannot wait until Untamable comes out so that I can continue the adventure.

Soooooo still reeling from the emotional roller coaster MC decided to put me on, but when I say this book is amazing I mean it’s amazing 🤩

Tbh, I haven’t read very many indie books and I was hesitant at first but there has been so many good reviews how could I not read it?

Well I did

AND I LOVED IT SO MUCH LIKE TESSA AND NURSE ARE JUST THEYRE SO CUTE

Also, I seriously thought Nurse didn’t have a name and then I found out it was Ayden and I was very confused, but it makes him even better

So, I am a Nurse fan

I am a Tessa fan (dude her narrative is the best like)

And I wanted more Tiny

100000000000/10 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

(Also, now I need the second one)

5/5 - a cool start to a dystopian series

A few weeks ago, I went on a book shopping spree on Amazon. I’m not a huge dystopian fan, so Untouchable was a bit of a wild card. However, it gave me Maze Runner/Divergent vibes, so I decided to give it a shot. And boy, am I glad that I did! I’m genuinely shocked by how much I enjoyed it- I sat down to read the first few chapters and wound up reading the whole book in one sitting. It’s been a while since I was able to just sit and read like that, but Pending’s style was compelling and easy to follow. It also helped that 90% of the chapters included a cliffhanger.

If you like sarcastic narrators and traumatic backstories, you’ll love Tessa. She had good development throughout the story, and I’m excited to see how the ending will affect her in the sequel.

The supporting cast was quite likable, in my opinion. They all had distinct personalities, so you’re bound to find one to love, although *mild/vague spoiler* they’ll probably die.

The labyrinth was super cool. I loved all the different areas and the vast array of creatures that wanted to kill them. It was also nice to see characters who got realistically wounded and had to deal with the injuries throughout the story.

An INSTANT one-day read. You’ll NEED to know what happens next, it’s a must!

I’d like to address the writing style: considering the narrator is *literally* illiterate but still captures emotions so exquisitely and unlike anything I’ve read, it’s disappointing to read “reviewers” who weren’t careful enough to consider the NARRATOR. Tessa isn’t supposed to be some university student majoring in British Literature. (Take this from someone who’s taken the class twice with a near 4.0-GPA.) She quite literally grew up in the streets. She’s a teen who was raised outside of the typical “educated” home. The writing style is simple and appropriately so, but as said earlier, it makes her emotional narration much more powerful. It’s raw and real and, unironically, poetic and not simplistic at all. I was amazed.

So the writing is easy to follow along with at all moments, Tessa is hilarious and amusing, and the characters are really developed; you won’t find one cookie cutter in this one. Emotions and trust are thrown all over the place (in a great but also heartbreaking way). Read it and put it on your favorites. :D

Untouchable had me hooked right away. I felt like I was actually in the Sapphire Ward with Tessa & her Untouchable children, and when Tessa was taken to the Labyrinth, I was transported to a whole new world as well!

I absolutely loved all of the characters, Tiny, Tessa, Nurse, Ehyrs, Beck, Nurse, Kyrstal… the list goes on. They were well-developed and made for a great character cast!

I hardly ever want to cry while reading & Untouchable got me, my heart was torn! But there was also laughter, particularly when it came to interactions between Tessa & Nurse!

The CLIFFHANGER ENDING had me freaking out! I CANNOT WAIT TO FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!!!

Finally, I just want to take a moment to admire the cover. It is gorgeous! And the detail of Tessa’s sun on the spine is perfect!

This book was literally amazing! By Chapter 2 I was invested. I was so attached to the characters, I was literally crying. (I don't cry much at books). It was so amazing. I read it in 3 days then cried some more realizing I was finished. THIS BOOK WAS INCREDIBLE, I'm looking forward to the sequel. This author is cray talented and I aspire to write a book as good as this some day!

Untouchable was so good! I loved the fast pace and the story made me want to read it all in one sitting. I loved the characters and they were very relatable. The MC was very funny.
I liked the twists.
The ending of the book I liked too. I can’t wait for the next book from MC Pending!

Fun fact: The Untouchables is a thing, called the Dalits. They are the lowest rung of the caste system in India. They do the contaminating work no one else wants to do. They have no choice in the matter, being born to Untouchable parents. Link here for more information: https://www.thoughtco.com/who-are-the...
They are something like what is portrayed here, but not really.
Now onto the review!
Did you like The Maze Runner? How about Mockingjay, arguably the worst of the Hunger Games trilogy? Have you ever wanted both of those books combined into one book? If so, look no further!
First off, MC has my respect. (Also is your pseudonym a joke for main character pending? If so, kill off Tessa. I dare you) It is hard to write a book and jump through all of the self-publishing hoops. Teen authors are rare because writing is hard, and it takes time to get good at it. So kudos to you!
But prepare yourself, because I'm going to tear this book apart. (btw I would love to be your friend)
My friend sent me a copy, because she adored it and said it had chaos, so I was excited. The book itself looked very indie, as in the I detested the formatting, but again, supporting smaller authors is important! But my problems began with the writing. I'm going to be gentle because Amelia (hello!) will totally be reading this.
The writing felt young. I don't know how to put this. Cliched, maybe? This book was built on them. The Labyrinth is the maze, right down to the scorpion monsters, and I didn't like the Maze Runner, so maybe it's a me thing. But the view of the Capitol and "Belly Button Town"-no. Just no. I read Defy the Night recently, and that had a fun moral dilemma of "awful government but ruling is hard and we're doing the best we can". The villains were pretty one-dimensional, and Tessa wasn't much better. It wasn't until she got to the Labyrinth that things became interesting, and it wasn't until the end of the book that I got invested.
The only character I liked was Nurse. He was the only one that felt even remotely real to me. Everybody else either had too much optimism or didn't care about anyone else *cough cough Tessa cough cough*. We get it, Katniss. Except Katniss did care about Prim. So. Maybe it was for character development? I don't know, but I had a hard time caring about her because of it.
Hated Drina, but also wanted to like her so bad because Tessa hated her. I was so afraid of a catfight, which didn't happen. Also a love triangle, which didn't happen. Appreciated. I liked Katelyn, but I didn't feel her. They didn't have any quirks, nothing to make them feel real. That was a problem the book suffered from, I feel. Less time with Tiny and the other fifteen children who get primetime at the beginning, and more with you know, the actually important characters.
I take that back. I liked Beck and Rhys too. They were cool.
Also, acknowledging that it's weird everyone is hot doesn't make it less weird everyone is hot. It's a book. It's implied everyone is hot.
Spoilers from here.

Untouchable

༄*ੈ✩ sweet baby Jesus, I haven’t had a book wreck me like this since The Unanswered Questions.

Granted, this is the second book I’ve finished in 2022 and TUQ was the first... ANYWAY, moving on-
• Where to start, where to start-
• this book took me an EMBARRASSINGLY long time to finish. I bought the kindle version in August 10th of 2021. turns out reading books digitally tends to give me migraines if I keep at it for too long. Long story short, life got in the way and I ordered the hardcover in early January of 2022.
• It came in a week ago, I was swamped with school, but I binged the last 140 pages in one sitting tonight (February 4th, 2022).

I’m gonna just praise MC Pending because she is hilarious, chaotic, and wonderful friend.

the fact that I can say I’ve connected with one of my favorite authors, who is INCREDIBLY talented, is huge. If y’all read my review on The Unanswered Questions by Lauren D Fulter, y’all know I feel the same way. Being part of the indie author community is such a blessing I thank God for every day!

I laughed out loud multiple times. I also put my hand to my mouth, nodded along in agreement, snorted, and cried. I wanted to throw it a few times too, but it’s a heavy hardback this is a new room.

༄*ੈ✩ my favorite things about it
• squeaky-clean. wholesome romance, no cussing but lots of silly replacement words/inpalcations, all very relatable
• The Truth- if you’ve read Notouchy or are reading it, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. This metaphor/symbolism is so moving to me, and some of the characters. It brought me to tears one or twice.
• the setting (getting its own section)
• the pacing was perfect- the times I sat and binged this book, I flew through it!
• The humor is on point, and not forced in the slightest
• The combination between sci-fi fantasy, and dystopian elements was amazing. This book is reminiscent of Red Queen, Under the Never Sky, Alive, and The Maze Runner!

༄*ੈ✩ official summary

I will survive...

Seventeen-year-old Tessa has lived her entire life in a world where her worth is defined by her rank in society.
• And her rank just happens to be the lowest- the Unranked- the Untouchables. The people that aren't treated as people. Tessa has her ways of living outside the law, scavenging and robbing anyone who has a face. But after being elected reluctant leader of a band of Untouchable children, Tessa has more than one life to look out for. She has always saved her own skin.

So when she actually risks everything she has worked- well, robbed- for, her punishment awaits.

The Labyrinth awaits.

༄*ੈ✩ Leigh’s summary
• emotional damage with sandwiches, pretty eyes, tons of blood, weird royals, ugly monsters, and wholesome romance, sandwiched between more emotional damage. Now take this delectable emotional-damage-sandwich, and set it on fire. Toss it into a dumpster. Set the dumpster on fire. Put the flaming dumpster in a train going off the tracks. Congratulations, now you have an emotional-damage-sandwich-train-wreck.

༄*ੈ✩ the characters
• characters make or break a story. These characters CARRIED. Book one is definitely more character-centered than plot-centered, and I was here for it! The balance between description and dialogue was perfect, and Tessa’s Bardot on was absolutely wonderful. Mc and Tessa just don’t miss.

• I don’t know if the fact that I strongly related to you and your emotions and outlook on the world at several points during this beautiful train wreck of a story is good or bad-
• Tessa you’re legit so cool and one of my favorite main characters I’ve read about!!

𝙽𝚞𝚛𝚜𝚎 𝙱𝚘𝚢/𝙱𝚒𝚐 𝙼𝚞𝚜𝚌𝚕𝚎𝚜

• Mom vibes
• Way too nice, like how?? I could never.

• Sandy Boy™️ (if you know, you know)

𝚃𝚒𝚗𝚢
• All hail King Tiny
• leave Tessa’s toothbrush alone
• without you, this story wouldn’t exist (probably)

𝚁𝚒𝚎𝚗𝚗𝚊
• literally die lol.
• thats all I have to say. you and Elara from Red Queen would get on well.

𝙶𝚊𝚕𝚎𝚗
• you’re cool. have a cupcake. I like you.

𝙳𝚛𝚒𝚗𝚊/𝙳𝚘𝚗𝚔𝚎𝚢𝚑𝚎𝚊𝚍
• Regina George’s reincarnation as a rat.
• you certainly kept things interesting, that’s for sure. now fall down a stupid hole and get buried by some stupid sand.

༄*ੈ✩ the world
• This book’s word felt like home
• the dystopian fantasy sci-fi vibe- I’m here for it
• The worldbuilding is great and I feel like it’s going to be expanded on in book two
• The concept of the labyrinth is quite interesting if I do say so myself
• Collectors 🤮

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟/⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

If I could give Notouchy more stars, I would. It’s going down as one of my top reads ever, and I highly recommend it to anyone who’s looking for a fun, clean, fast-paced, heartbreaking, creative read by an extremely talented young independent author! The concept/world is familiar to other dystopians, in some elements, but the characters, motives, mystery, and tropes truly set it apart.

did I mention enemies-to-lovers?

If you love a fast plot, unique character relationships, funny dialogue, and vertically challenged MCs look no further.

If I could choose one word to describe my reading experience it would be FUN. Untouchable will put a smile on your face and tears in your eyes. M.C. Pending built character relationships unlike any I have ever read. Every relationship that Tessa had was so much like a classic sibling relationship, well except one (If you know what I mean 😏) and I loved everything about it.

I canNOT wait to get my hands on book 2 (Untamable) because this one ended on such a HUGE HEART-WRENCHING cliffhanger that I must figure out what the actual heck is happening.

I strongly encourage you to pick up this fun young adult novel and support your new favorite indie author!

MC Pending crafts an adventure that leaves you with adrenaline and asking for more.
The characters are so well crafted, and the main two ones have such a fun and lovable energy about them. Their bantering is literally what I live for. I'm already mentally planning their wedding for this coming fall.
MC's action and suspense is definitely perfectly worked out and never leaves a page boring. It always surprises you, and I'm not going to give anything away, but something's she has decided to do makes you quite a mess after reading. 😭
Like, seriously. Why go and break our hearts???
I beta read this book and even in the early stages I could see so much potential and I cannot wait to read the finished draft!
MC is a super talented young author and friend and definitely deserves these 5 stars.

Most fun book I have read in a long time!

My favorite main character since Katniss from Hunger Games. (I promise that’s about as big of a compliment as I can give)

Tessa, the main character, is such fun voice. She is tough, sarcastic, and surprisingly deep. I would read any story told from her point of view. She paints a perfect picture, and she is a character that is so easy to root for.

This book was so easy to read and easy to love. The plot was complex enough to be interesting but clear enough to follow easily.

Everything was written so clearly. The author had the character voices down perfectly. Each character was written so well, and I liked each role they played in advancing the story.

The only knock on this book is the early chapters feel a little slow, but that is quickly forgotten as you move into the main story.

And I won’t spoil the end, but it was… WOW!

Overall: I give Untouchable a 4.8/5. It delivers on all of its promises, and it was a just a fun read. Can’t wait for book 2!

SPOILERS (Minor):
-This had the feel of hunger games. Teens in a death trap. Thankfully they were mostly on the same side, but it had that survival urgency along with a relationship you wanted to root for.
-This felt like the early part of the Maze Runner (you know, the good part). The “escape from the death trap” feel where anything could kill you but you’re all in it together.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would! It’s not that I had low expectations, I just didn’t really have any expectations. I was eager to meet the characters, but that was the extent of my expectations going into it. But I really enjoyed it. Reading it seemed to fly by, especially the last 50 or so pages. I didn’t realize I was so close to the end! And that ending. Oh boy, I will definitely be buying the second book. I’m sad it’s not out yet, but I also totally understand. 😅 You can’t rush a good story. So overall, I give the book 5/5 stars and definitely recommend it to those who enjoy dystopian and adventure.

GAHHHHHH THIS BOOK MAKES ME LOSE MY MIND
I'm not even gonna try to make this sound all nice and professional, because let's be honest, what book that makes us lose our mind lets us form coherent sentences?? literally none, so let's move along
Every single second of this book either surprised me, made me gasp, made me cry, made me laugh, or all four at once. Every single character is well-written and fleshed out so fully they appear right before your eyes. Everything they do and say is believable and mind-losing worthy, as all characters should be. The plot twists MC uses are absolutely fascinating, and you never see them coming. There's a fair amount of denial involved in the twists, and the epilogue is important to read. So don't forget to read that.
You're gonna want to read this book. It has found family, 'I don't have feelings,' some death, clean language, and so much humor. There's a variety of characters that include the hot and annoying one, the wholesome dad friend you wish you could marry, the babie-murder-queen strawberry blonde, the one who refuses to believe they actually have feelings, the dork, and the bubbly sunshine one that everyone is at least a little bit in love with. The plot keeps you engaged at every turn and when you might be tempted to put it down, the characters make you want to pick it right back up again. Green eyes and messy hair and swords galore are enough reason to read this book. You'll thank me later.

Just beautiful, marvelous...after reading this I almost feel as no other book could measure up. I need more, please....dying for another good book 📖
The story line was wonderful, the characters were lovable, the man to simp over, the fluffy romance. The comedic relief. The cliffhanger at the end, I cried, I laughed, I simped. This. Truly. Is. A...masterpiece.

I loved this book.... and I don't know why...
But I WILL try to explain:

(But first I should say that I am the pickiest reader who has left a review so far. Note the fact that everyone else loved the book 100%, 'cause that says something)

First, I think we need to keep in mind that this is the author's VERY FIRST book. There are bound to be major flaws simply because the author is still refining her craft, so if she continues to focus on growing, every flaw listed below will be corrected in future works, and every strong quality will be amplified.

With that said, here are my honest thoughts on...

---THE STORY'S ELEMENTS---
The book itself is a very trope-y YA dystopian, complete with a scrappy female protagonist and an objectified love interest. We have the standard corrupt government and death-game-for-kids.
These tropes (among others) made for a predictable plotline (to a point), and yet I found that I didn't mind at all. Yeah, I laughed at some of the clichés, but it was nice to have a story that I could possibly "figure out" if I tried hard enough.

---THE WRITING ITSELF---
This is where the fact that the author is new can be most clearly seen. While the writing isn't BAD, per se, it is quite rough for most of the book, especially in the areas of emotional transition and emotional immersion.
There were a few times when the characters switched emotional states wayyyy too quickly, and it was a bit jarring to me as a reader.
My problem with the immersion is that I was TOLD what the characters were feeling (emotionally and otherwise), but I rarely had the opportunity to feel it with the character(s). I know what it's like to be bone-tired, what it's like to get an injury, what it's like to become furious, and what it's like to feel jaded and cynical... but it was more like I was watching from the outside as the characters experienced it, rather than feeling it with them on the inside.
Obviously, this is something that will change as the author grows, but for now, there was really only one section where I can remember feeling much of anything WITH the characters (that section was chapter 30. Great job on that part, MC, it made tears come to my eyes).
The dialogue is a little wonky in places where emotional shifts should have happened yet didn't, but it wasn't terrible.
The pacing was pretty good.
The main characters were not flat (admittedly, though, most of the side characters were), but without the descriptive immersion I referenced a couple paragraphs ago, they couldn't be fully three-dimemsional. Also, only Tessa seems to have any kind of character arc at this point.

I think my main beef with the writing was the fact that Tessa would sometimes make assumptions that were spot on... though there was no way for her to know they were correct... and I was left wondering whether the thing she "knew" was a legit fact, or if it was just her theory.

Again, all this will come with practice. There were no dealbreakers for me when it came to the writing, just some things that I wish could have been better.

---THE CONTENT---
For those wondering, yes, this book was clean. There was blood and death (of course), but nothing gory, and nothing on the romance front other than some (clean) jokes and a kiss or two.

This part did irk me: The main character was an absolute jerk for almost the entire story, and yet, instead of calling her out for her immature bratty behavior, every side character adored her.
Maybe it's just because I have worked with the public for a couple years, but the inaccuracy of that really gets to me. A person can be snarky or abrasive and others will still try to be friends with them, but if those qualities are never balanced out with genuine empathy and genuine respect, others will stop trying, and end up deciding to avoid that person.

With that said, most of the plot was quite interesting, and even though there were parts I didn't like, I never once wanted to stop reading.
Even though Tessa irritated me sometimes, I liked her as a protagonist.
I can join everyone else in saying that Nurse is fantastic, and if he doesn't get to be in a whole field of flowers by the end of the series, I will be sad. I will pout.
Beck and Ehrys became very interesting side characters after a bit. I would like to know more about them.

And as I said at the beginning, I loved this book. Despite its flaws, I want more of this story. This series is near the top of my TBR right now, and I fully intend to purchase the rest of these books as soon as my budget allows.

And MC Pending, if you are reading this: despite my nitpicking, I am NOT saying that you are a bad writer. You're inexperienced, that's all. To use a BJJ ranking metaphor: when you wrote this story, though you may have had a few stripes on your belt, you were still white belt level. Keep going. You have a good imagination. You have talent. All it takes to get from white belt to black belt is consistency and TIME. You're doing great so far. I point out your flaws because I know that you can overcome them, and I look forward to seeing what happens when you do just that.
