The wheels on the bus go round and round …
But who’s that getting on? OH, NO!
It’s a LION! And a PANTHER! And a CROCODILE!

Gareth first started writing when he was very young but it wasn’t until he was in his early twenties that he completed his first novel. Having had it universally rejected he wrote a novel for children called Who Killed Charlie Twig, which received an equally unimpressed reception and remains rightly unpublished to this day.

Some years passed during which Gareth met his future wife, Lisa and began a career in TV, working on shows such as The Big Breakfast and Richard & Judy. Then one day he found himself having lunch at the offices of Bloomsbury. He mentioned the unpublished book to a nice lady called Sarah, who politely suggested that he should send in the first three chapters for her to look at (and most likely dismiss, she thought to herself). Gareth returned home and excitedly told his wife this news, who gently explained that the book he had written actually wasn’t very good, but reminded him that he had recently begun work on a much better idea. This turned out to be good advice. In 2007 Bloomsbury published the first of four books in the series The Dragon Detective Agency and have since published The Thornthwaite Inheritance, Space Crime Conspiracy and The Considine Curse. He has also written a shorter story, Perry’s 5, published by Barrington Stoke and a series of books called Ninja Meerkats, published by Stripes.

Gareth now divides his time between writing books, producing TV programmes, spending time with his wife and son, Herbie and playing the slightly ludicrous number of stringed instruments in his front room.

The Dragon Detective Agency: The Case of the Missing Cats was shortlisted for the Waterstone’s Book Prize.

The Lion on the Bus is a rewording of the classic children’s song ‘The Wheels on the Bus’. This time instead of the wheels going round and round or the wipers going swish, swish, swish, we have a lion on the bus going rar, rar, rar. Followed by a panther, crocodile, and some wolves.

The story is a lot of fun and children and adults together can sing the amusing lyrics. I particularly liked the bus driver’s reaction to the animals being on his bus, and how the people passing him by think that he is waving at them rather than trying to tell them about the animals. The ending is amusing too.

This is a book I can see children asking to be read to them over and over again. It is illustrated beautifully with full-page, colourful illustrations that are humorous to look at. It will also make children giggle, keep them entertained, and have them blasting out their singing voices following the lyrics.

I was unaware this was a singing read and went if it as a result, Noah seemed a little perplexed to until I interpreted the relationship between the imagery and the lyrics to him. He was slightly more of a fan. Can’t see us renewing this at the library though.

Alexander (aged 2) and Nanny.
A bus story of course. Nanny saw this on a visit to the local library and decided she needed a copy of her own.

Based on ‘Wheels on the Bus’.
Nanny wasn’t too sure if Alexander would like this but he did.
He particularly liked the ‘Panther’s prowling’ (new animal and a new word.)
He liked the different animals at their stop and loved the end when they all sand along with a ‘do whoop de doo!’

Such a fun read- 18 m/o Bud loves this. He is so engaged with the book already as he knows the Wheels on the Bus song and this book is a great extension of this idea with the introduction of potential peril in the form of a lion and a panther. Bud really engages with the actions for the song and we have come up with new actions for the new verses. I think we would definitely renew this one at some point.
