Judith M. Smith received her M.A. from the University of Michigan where she is a Ph.D. candidate in Educational Psychology. She has taught at all levels, from kindergarten through college. Mrs. Smith has recently completed work as editor of a University of Michigan research project in child variance, and as curriculum coordinator for a project on severely impaired children; she is currently principal investigator for a teacher training project on crisis intervention. Mrs. Smith is also the author or co-author of numerous books in educational psychology, including Classroom Management and Michigan Language Program.

Donald E. P. Smith received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in Educational Psychology. He is presently a professor in Educational Psychology and Director of the Office of Instructional Services in the School of Education, University of Michigan. He formerly directed the University Reading Center and has served as a faculty member of Michigan's Center for Programmed Learning, Center for Research on Language and Language Behavior, and the Mental Health Research Institute. Dr. Smith has been a frequent contributor to the research literature and is the author of numerous books and articles, including A Technology of Reading and Writing and Learning to Learn. He is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Psychological Association.
Dr. and Mrs. Smith have four children.
