In Survival Machines, book two of The Origin Trilogy, John and the army of survivors continue the search they started in Darwin’s Soldiers. Who brought them to this bizarre world and for what purpose?
Discoveries are made and battle fought as the allied army are drawn into a world populated by alien armies who have survived the same tests as them. Factions fight to get to the core: a prized location which offers them the answers they are all searching for.
But a new threat rises, in the hyper-evolved Tathon, who threaten to tear the new world apart. The very survival of all species is at risk as John desperately tries to get the factions to work as one and defend the core.
Will their adaptations be strong enough against their new foe? And will anyone survive?
Ste Sharp's novels follow ordinary people on extra-ordinary journeys venturing beyond the boundaries of regular life.
Head to the '90s to solve the mystery of The Penguin Killer with Luke Redfern, or traverse the galaxy with WW1 soldier, John Greene, one of Darwin's Soldiers.
Gripping battle filled quest. John and co end up on a strange new world searching for the people who brought them to it. The humans and aliens face a new threat. The Uber evolved Tathon are just that, promising to tear our allies apart. John must lead the various factions together to find a way out.
One theme throughout the book is that of ascension. Another is possible betrayal. I’ll let you decide the rest.
I must admit the whole host of characters in this book had me going back and just double checking who was who sometimes. A glossary/cast list would be good. However, this doesn’t detract from the easy to read prose. Ste takes a cast of thousands and orchestrates them well through the various theatres of war. A wonderfully rich turn of phrase and concise description helps the imagination fill in the other parts, which I how I like to read.
I am going to back the third volume as I did the two before. Keep em coming Ste.
Like this first book of the series, this is good sci-fi. The best of Earth's warriors are abducted and are plunked down in a truly alien environment. Now that they have escaped the dome, the are pitted against a new foe. To say much more would ruin the plot's surprises.
I really enjoyed the twists and turns the story took. It was truly unpredictable, something I like in a novel because I have read so many books that I have become quite good a guessing where the plot is going to go. It is nice to be surprised now and then.
I am looking forward to more in this series. It is an Unbound book, and I plan on supporting any more books in this series or by this author.
Recommended for pre-teens and up. Some graphic violence. Language is clean and there is no sexual content.
