Finding a Friend by Tracy Swain is a heartwarming story about deep blue, a sweet, friendly, great white shark, who wants nothing more than to make a new friend. With the help of cushy the starfish, she journeys through the ocean, trying to befriend various sea creatures. Her confidence is shaken each time Creatures scatter at the site of the great white. Through positive self talk and deep breathing exercise, deep blue is able to maintain her confidence and persevere! The illustrations are colorful and inviting! The story is well written with scientific facts embedded throughout. Finding a Friend is filled with engaging, sometimes humorous dialogue. Children will also enjoy the fun fact cards at the end of the story .
As an elementary teacher, I have added this book to my classroom library! What a great read aloud to use while teaching about friendship, kindness, and inclusivity. Finding a friend lens itself to socially emotional learning and growth mindset activities. My students absolutely love this book!

This book is a great combination of fiction and non fiction. Even the youngest students appreciate the story and the facts they learn. The author shows the time and dedication to the topic. This book is great for SEL and to supplement science to support background knowledge.
