With playful illustrations and a good dose of Southern sass, this book would make a delightful gift for expectant parents and little ones. Trust us—it's fixin' to be your family's new favorite book.
I grew up in the southern part of the United States below the Mason Dixon Line. I loved reading SOUTHERN BABY and immediately recognized the different words taught in this book such as “cattywampus which is crooked or topsy-turvy.” Each word includes it used in a sentence such as “Baby’s clothes look all cute and cattywampus.”
Whether you live in the south or want to teach your child southern words, you will want to read SOUTHERN BABY over and over. Jennica Lounsbury did a remarkable job on the well-done illustrations and Rebekah Moredock entertains children and parents with her creative words. I enjoyed this board book and recommend it.
“This little board book introduces young ones to the uniquely charming language of the South,” states the back cover of Rebekah Moredock’s children’s book, Southern Baby: Southern Sayings for Little Ones.
~ What ~ With rounded edges, this twenty-page board book targets children ages two to five years old. With no scary scenes, it focuses on words and phrases that relate to the southern states of America. Expressive and charming full-color illustrations grace the pages with easy-to-read font size.
In this cute book, the ten words or short sayings explain common languages that those in the South speak. Mentioned are Buggy, Bless Your Heart, Cuter than a June Bug, Cattywampus, Fixin’ to, Clicker, Madder than a Wet Hen, Knee-High to a Grasshopper, Commode, and Ya’ll.
~Why ~ This is a nice way to show how one talks is different than in other parts of the country, especially in the southern states. I like that the words are mostly specific to the targeted area, although some are used elsewhere. Those who live in the South will connect and relate to the sayings and artwork. My niece who lives in Louisiana and recently had a daughter will enjoy this book.
~ Why Not ~ Those who do not like books that concentrate on a specific part of America may not appreciate this read. Some may feel uncomfortable that a toilet is one of the words, which is used in other parts of the country. A few may find the three and four-syllable words too hard for beginner readers, yet it is geared toward toddlers.
~ Wish ~ While this one is only about the South, it would be nice if it could be a part of a series that covered all parts of the United States.
~ Want ~ If you like Southern charm, this would make a lovely gift for an expectant parent or young one, especially if they are moving to the area and need tips on fun and unique sayings and words.
Thanks to Hachette Book Group, WorthyKids, and the author for this complimentary book that I am under no obligation to review.
Southern Baby is a children’s book written to teach our children some of the words we often hear and use in the South. They have been passed down from generation to generation. It explained what a buggy is, what bless your heart means, cuter than a June bug, fixin’ to, y’all, madder than a wet hen, just to name a few.
I liked how they included a sentence with the word in it and they also defined it to where kids could understand when they hear these sayings. I grew up in the South so I’m very familiar with all these saying and have heard them most of my life. I think the South will especially enjoy reading about these funny sayings and words. Even if you aren’t from the South the book will also assist others to understanding the meaning of them. I would recommend this book to any children from a baby to age 6. I loved the illustrations included in the book and how they helped to convey what the meaning means and it give the child a picture to help them understand.
"I received this book free from the publisher, Hachette Book Group/Faithwords/ Worthy Kids for my honest review.”
Learn the fun ways that people in the southern part of the U.S. refer to different things in life. Maybe you already know these sayings and use them.
For instance, do you know what cattywampus means? How about clicker or buggy, are you familiar with those?
Whether you have heard them or not, you and little ones will enjoy these regional expressions. They will bring a giggle or a smile to faces. Before you know it, phrases like “fixin’ to” and “cute as a June bug” will be heard around you. Small ones will love seeing depictions of other children in lots of different situations.
Children up to four-years-old will like this five-star, over-sized board book that features adorable illustrations on every page. This is a fun book for all times, and would also be useful for those occasions when settling down.

Now that I live in the south, I'm hearing southern sayings more and more and what a fun way to share them with your toddlers but in a book. Some of the sayings, like "buggy", are definitions of a tangible thing. Other sayings, such as "madder than a wet hen" are traditional southern sayings. This book is illustrated by Jennica Lounsbury with variety of skin tones, ages, and family types that make this an inclusive book for all children to relate to. This board book is a fun way to talk about some of the sayings that one might hear in the south and an amusing story to share with a little one with a short attention span.
I received this book from Hachette Book Group for free in exchange for an honest review.

With fun and witty illustrations featuring diverse ages and ethnicities, phrases and words like “Bless Your Heart” and “Cattywampus” give young readers a hint of southern charm.
The book has sturdy rounded pages and includes a presentation page if you have a hankerin’ to give it as a gift. This charming toddler’s book will make you as happy as a clam at high tide.
