The Russia Chronicles #2

The Siberian Spirit

Rate this book
A desperate band of Russian street kids has been forced to flee their hideout in Moscow’s Second Subway. Totally unprepared to survive in the sub-freezing countryside, they have only one to reach a hidden Slavic pagan sanctuary called The Lake. Peter Greenfield no longer thinks of returning to his former life as the pampered son of American diplomats. Now known as Pyotr Bolshoiov, his more immediate problem is to survive the brutal Russian winter and keep his new family of “small homeless” together. Katya, a glue addict from an impoverished Siberian family, may be the key to the group’s survival. The secrets hidden in her family tree could also make her a threat to the Russian government’s hold on power. She must outwit a ruthless agent of the Federal Security Bureau, who will stop at nothing to take his own personal revenge on Katya and the rest of her bunch. Stranded in the cold and shunned by heartless villagers, they have no choice but to trek eastward. A chance encounter with a group of international tourists on the Trans-Siberian Express could bring the help they so urgently need – or deliver all of them into the hands of the FSB. Katya’s stubborn Siberian spirit will be tested, not only by the elements, but by the sinister forces vowing to make Katya, Pyotr and their friends disappear.

More to Love

I have only one complaint and that's the swearing. Too much too often and too, too creative. However, it's a story about adolescents who live on the streets and are forced on a treacherous journey during the Siberian winter. So it's understandable.
In book one the characters wrapped themselves around my heart and I longed to help them. In book two my heart broke more than once but they had champions who helped, finally.
And now, two books in, I am ready for the next in the series because I must know what's next for this group of children as they battle the environment and the government and the constant threat of brutality all around them.
Bravo, Mr. Clement! Bravo!

I really loved the characters in the first book, scrappy kids living in Moscow's secret second subway. Peter, the lost American who decides to join them, has become their leader on a trek through the brutal Russian winter. Giving four stars because the genre of books about people freezing to death in the snow is not my favorite. But once you get past that, it's a real page turner. Already ordered the next one the series.

This book takes the main character and his homeless friends out of the subway tunnels. Now they are on a quest in the brutal conditions of a Russian winter. There's still plenty of swearing and drug abuse, but not in a gratuitous way. It only seems natural to me that these kids would cuss and try to take the edge off of their sad lot in life. The bad guy must be the worst cop in history because he can't shoot or fight but he also refuses to back down or go away. The author manages to make you actually care about the other characters. There are more hints about the backstory of Katja and Rozha, so I look forward to what the next installment will bring.
