Romancing the Stone Witch

Delia hears voices, and they love to talk dirty…

Delia Forrest’s magical power is annoying AF. Statues talk to her—everywhere, all the time. Marble satyrs flirt, Cemetery angels scold, and alabaster busts spill all the family secrets. Rejected as a child for failing to keep her witchcraft under wraps, Delia hides in plain sight as a stone conservator, wielding chisel and brush to heal her friends of stone. When fire guts Delia’s childhood home, she must return to the small town of Coventry, where she finds herself at the mercy of the only man who ever touched her with kindness. But oh, how Grant Wolverton has changed.

Although he is king of an arts and antiquities empire, ruthless Grant Wolverton is a treasure hunter at heart. Before the embers are cold, Grant snatches Delia’s estate out from under her, and secretly hunts the arsonist. Delia’s veiled sensuality captivates him, even though her father is a prime suspect for the crime. Grant hires Delia so he can spy on her, and pleasures her in order to unearth her secrets.

Their ecstasy creates chaos…

The more Grant uses her body, the more he steals Delia’s heart—and feeds her wild magic. But as her gift grows, so, too, grows a dark and hungry force, one that will stop at nothing to claim the estate, enthrall Grant and destroy Delia Forrest.

Romancing the Stone Witch is book one in the Cards of Coventry series by Keri Stevens. The book focuses on main character Delia Forrest, who has the unique gift of being able to speak to statues. Being a stone conservator, the statues talk to her incessantly and seem to be her only friend in a world which has been quite cruel to her and her gifts. When her estranged father is hurt in a house fire, Delia’s world comes crashing down around her as a man from her past, Grant Wolverton comes back into the picture and tries to take her beloved house from her. But Grant is not the person that Delia remembers and the reason that he has come back into her life may not necessarily be altruistic.

This was definitely an interesting story with a good story line and some great characters. Delia is shy, quiet and vulnerable to begin with, but her confidence grows throughout the book as does her relationship with the ever-brooding Grant. I enjoyed the sometimes-hilarious interplay that Delia has with the statues as well as the twist and turns in the book as we figure out who the players are and how they all fit together.

A good read and a great start to a new series!

ARC received for a fair, honest and sometimes long review. All opinions are my own. 😊

Romancing the Stone Witch is a fun start to a new series. Delia is a Stone Witch, working as a stone conservator cleaning and repairing stone statuary. She has the ability to hear and speak to the statues, which has made her feel like an outcast for most of her life. Her best friends are the statues she repairs. When her estranged dad is injured in a house fire, she returns to her childhood home only to realize that she cannot keep the home and afford the expensive care her father requires for his recovery. She ends up selling her house to Grant, an antiquities dealer of sorts, who's been the subject of her long-held crush. He's much colder than she remembers, but despite that, there's a lot of sexual tension between the pair. Delia ends up convincing Grant to hire her to restore her childhood home while her long lost cousin schemes to try to take the house for herself.

I really liked Delia's strength of character, she's spent her whole life being the weird kid and hiding her ability, so she handles herself graciously. I liked her ability, I don't know if I've read another book where the MC had the ability to talk to statues, and I enjoyed it here. I liked Grant’s evolution through the story, and I liked his sister since we were able to see his softer side. There were some parts that I wished were fleshed out a little more, mostly in Cecily's story, and there were a few minor typos, but nothing so distracting it took me out of the story. Overall, I enjoyed the story and definitely would like to read more about Delia and Grant-- although I'm not sure if the next book will focus on them or other characters we met in this story.

kaleidoscope

Delia Forrest hasn’t had the best of life. She is introverted an cautious with people. As a child she was traumatized an now today the relationship with her father is strained. In the beginning she seems very shy, insecure and mousy. She really evolved and gained confidence and gumption.

I found myself laughing out loud over the banter and comments from the statues. I loved how the statues interacted and grew.

Enter…..Grant Wolverton sexy, rich and single. He is stubborn and on a mission to acquire Delia’s family home Steward House.

I really enjoyed the banter and chemistry between Delia & Grant.

Cecily who claims to be Delia’s cousin is a supremely evil - selfish, vindictive person who covets the energy found at Steward House.

I was so excited for this book. I loved the concept of statues speaking an wasn’t disappointed in there antics and shenanigans.

There is quite a bit of mystery and suspense in this book.

My first Keri Stevens book and it won't be my last! Delia - the main character - can hear and speak to statues, an ability that she was brought up to keep secret, which makes her feel very isolated. A fire at her family home upends her quiet, stable life cleaning and restoring statues and brings in new challenges and the overpowering Grant, who thaws during the story from an initially cold, selfish man. The story is interesting, fun and has some good characters; the statues are hilarious. It was definitely worth reading and I'm looking forward to more of this series.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it's the first I've read from this author and will definitely be adding their future books to my must read list. This book has strong, well written characters and good chemistry between Delia and Grant. I found Grant a little overbearing at first but liked the by-play between him and Delia. I enjoyed how this didn't follow the same route as other books I'd read in this genre and found Delia's powers to be a fresh and original concept. I'd definitely recommend this book.

For a start, the title made made me smile as it reminded me of a film I used to watch with my children! The storyline of the book flows well, has a nice plot and is well written! I loved the BADDIE! The heroine develops throughout the book, as does her love life. The portrayal of her frustration and cynicism is very eloquently detailed. Some very nice touches, twists and turns including a lovely hallmark moment. A great read and an Author I WILL be following!

This is a new to me author and I really enjoyed her writing. Delia and Grant had some hot love scenes (some were a little graphic for my tastes) but it didn't turn me away from the book. I loved the personalities that Stevens gave the statues. There is even a moment I felt bad for the antagonist...but that only lasted for a quick minute. ;) Will definitely be purchasing the next book!

This is a new author for me and I really enjoyed this book. She wrote about family discord, love, challenges and special gifts that are not always a blessing. I was captured by her style and her ability to make her characters believable. This combination always hooks me. I can’t wait to read her next book. I’ve found a new author.

Slow start but improved by the end. Recommended by one of my favorite authors so I gave it a chance. Premise was original but the romance struggled to hold my attention until they were fully engulfed by each other. Will be interested to see where future books go.

“Romancing the Stone Witch” came as a recommendation from one of my favourite authors, thus I know I have to read it 😉 and I did, and I am sooooo glad 😊. The first book in the “Cards of Coventry” series by Keri Stevens is a fresh, original brand-new approach to urban fantasy. Della Forrest (MC) is a woman with the utmost special ability to communicate with stone statues, and has make a living and a name for herself of restoring these (for everyone else) silent witness of time to their former splendor. Just this little tidbit is enough to construct an interesting, funny, and compelling UF world. But the book offers much more than that: a realistic, heartfelt story, full of twists, turns, interesting plots and non-ending enjoyment, and realistic romance, it has it all! You can just scroll up for an overview of the plot, no point in repeating it here 😊 but be aware this is the kind of book, you don’t want to miss , not matter what, but should you be attached to your sleep pattern, just maybe don’t begin the story late at night, you will not be able to put it down…. but as they say….sleep is overrated…. Just go, pick the book, and thank me later.
