Inspiring and beautifully written, "A Pearl Worth Diving For" provides a collection of fascinating anecdotes from the perspective of Daisy Bugarin, an extremely perceptive and determined young woman, as she details her struggles and victories from her decision to drop everything and relocate. This book immediately drew me in, transporting me to the heart of Shanghai, where I felt challenged to think about how I would react in the face of similar situations that Bugarin experienced. I was deeply touched by Bugarin's reflections on issues such as wealth disparity, relationships, tolerance, adaptation, and academic pressure in urban China. Bugarin is frank in her writing, and I was impressed by her ability to embrace Chinese culture without hesitation and quickly learn what it means to be an immigrant and expat. I would highly recommend this book to people of all ages and backgrounds, regardless of whether they have plans to work or live abroad. My favorite book of the year.
