Words of Power #4

Righteous Eight

Rate this book
Magic is all fun and games until someone tears a hole in reality and invites a menagerie of horrors in.

With the multiverse bursting at the seams, the Y2K threat looming, and only a nose ahead of an assassination plot, Jane and her husband grab their bug-out bag, jump in the Hummer, and drive to a survivalist bunker in North Dakota.

It’s great to be reunited with her parents and sisters. It’s great that her mentor’s family and the gun-nuns can join them. It’s not so great that Jane missed her C-Section appointment, the hospitals aren’t safe, and the only person on site who knows anything about surgery usually works on cadavers.

But as monsters begin to breach reality, Jane pushes carefully orchestrated birth plans aside and prepares to take a stand with their scrappy group of would-be heroes to avert the apocalypse. All they have to do is reconstruct a four thousand year old puzzle that was sabotaged, hold the line against an endless parade of sadistic fairy tale horrors, and repair the damage to reality - part of which Jane may be accidentally causing by continuing to breathe. Oops.

Amazing finish, honestly. One of the best wrapups of a series like this I've seen. The ending made me cry, but was also cathartic... 10/10, would absolutely read again.

Great conclusion

I think this was my favorite of the whole series. The story got so good. The characters were well developed. And wow there was some creepy stuff going on that made me really root for the heroes. Definitely a fun read. And scary. But fun.

Glorious. Absolutely glorious end to the series. The characters continue to be a delight to read with wonderfully distinct points of view and character voice. This whole series has continued to deliver on promises of intense, messy, and deeply real interpersonal relationships. Like with any good finale, book 4 builds on that groundwork and doesn't pull any punches. Let us not forget the culmination of an entire series worth of clues and hints to the true nature of magic in the world and the challenges they must face to save it. No spoilers because man do I hate spoilers, but the reveals are really really cool.

VK Fox has a great writing style that is fun and fast-paced. I love the inclusive characters, diverse representation, healthy romance, and just... all of it. I need to stop talking before I start spoiling things. Please, don't take my word for it. Go check this book out for yourselves.

So good it made me stay up all night finishing it AGAIN

VK Fox owes me sleep. I’ve been a huge fan of this series since the get go, and I loved this conclusion.
Jane is my favorite, and Fox was smart to keep her sidelined a lot of the time bc she’s so powerful. I knew she’d get her chance to shine in this book and boy does she ever. Even the kids get in on the action.
Is this book perfect? I mean, it has adorable golems, Baba Yaga, AND home brewing. So, maybe? Is it creepy, exciting, and sweet? Well it does have mutant pig monsters, snow mobile chases, and married people date nights. So, definitely!
I really related to the people trying to survive Y2K without so much as a decent Internet connection and the fae trying to mess up their work-life balance. I mean, I’ve been there. Stay off my old LJ.
I recommend this book and series to anyone who remembers sneaking out of camp, staying up late on message boards, or drawing their own comics. And everybody else too.

These books have so many layers and Righteous Eight wraps them all up well. We have beautiful and heartbreaking relationships and the heroism displayed by these individuals, further evidence of the corruption of a major organisation, and efforts to prevent the destruction of the world. It is a story that shines a light on the darkness in so many of the characters' pasts but then makes you laugh with unexpected humour. The author has built a highly original world, peopled it with flawed but fascinating characters and taken us on a thrilling ride. I'd love to read more stories set in this world!

This one was harder for me to get into. While I still enjoyed much of the character growth and interaction, the story seemed a bit disjointed and almost as if it lost focus.
