Baker Street Romance #6

Handful of Peaches

Rate this book
It was just another Saturday at the bookstore when Dalton Deangelo, the famous actor, came running in to hide from the press.

We clicked instantly. I fell for him because I’d always loved him... as the sexy vampire he played on my favorite TV show. And he fell for me because... I don’t know why.

I didn’t have a date for my cousin’s wedding, so he asked if he could tag along. I figured why not? I was just a regular, curvy girl who ran a bookstore, not a perfectly-trim actress. Everyone would know he was just doing me a favor.

Well, we went to the wedding, and my whole family loved him. Especially my mother.

After our date, I thanked Dalton for giving his number one fan a memorable night. To my surprise, he said we weren’t done yet. He muttered something about “research,” and proceeded to sweep me off my feet.

What happened next was the stuff of Hollywood headlines.

We’re talking scandal after scandal after scandal!

Now I’m at the center of it all, running around in my underwear.

Book one in a four book series brings Peaches and Dalton's story. The author brings a cast of supporting characters and weaves an entertaining story with the two meeting ,connecting and dating when he asks her to escort her to her cousins wedding. She does a great job building the story and had me glued to the pages right to the end and still left me with wanting more with the cliffhanger ending. Looking forward to the next book.

The great plot was professionally written, and the characters were so well developed that as I turned each page the chemistry between the characters kept me totally hooked until the very last page!

After reading so many glowing 5 star reviews for this story on Goodreads I really wasn’t going to write a review and rain on everyone else’s parade. After all if everyone else thought this was a great story maybe there’s just something wrong with me? I accept that everyone has different tastes in books just like they do in everything else. Just because I didn't particularly enjoy this story doesn't mean those that did are wrong. Still, I was stunned at the out pouring of praise for a story I found less than. Then I thought to myself, “No, uninformed readers deserve to hear a dissenting voice to the cacophony of praise the other reviewers are heaping upon Handful of Peaches. So here goes with the full acknowledgment that most readers loved this story.
Petra “Peaches” Monroe is I guess your typical 22-year-old young woman-child. I have no idea whether she graduated from college but I’m thinking not. She shares a house with her childhood BFF Nisha Patel who works at an underpaid job running a yoga studio while she crushes on her boss. Peaches works as a bookstore manager at Bookworms making so little that she is forced to eat generic store brand Pop Tarts because she can’t afford the real thing. She’s sexually active and she enjoys consuming alcohol. Like I said, your typical 22-year-old woman-child. Obviously, Peaches is a curvy girl since this is a book in the authors Curvy Girl series. And there’s nothing wrong with being a curvy girl if you’re content and comfortable with it. Except while Peaches exists on a breakfast diet of doughnuts and generic pop tarts she constantly obsesses over her weight and how others view her negatively because of it. She spends much of this story struggling with her self-image. But then I'm going to take a W.A.G. that curvy girls or women is intended to be this author's target audience. Yeah, I’m a man but I get how you can turn to unhealthy food for comfort or just because you really enjoy sugar and then hate yourself for eating it, even while you’re doing it. I get how some of us are meant to walk around with trim waistlines and six pack abs and some of us just aren’t. But for someone who seems so obsessed and painfully embarrassed by her weight (even though most people see her as an attractive plus size) Peaches doesn’t really seem to do anything beyond walking to most places she can walk to in order to control or reduce it. Her diet mainly consists of carbs, sugar (yeah, I know they're carbs too) and alcohol. But Peaches battle with her weight and her self-image aren’t really my problem with her character. If anything it made her character seem more real. My problem is Peaches got pregnant and had a baby boy, Elliott, at 15 whom her parents are raising as her little much younger brother. I get that how at 15 Peaches was hardly prepared to be a mother. But now at 22 years old, living independently, she seems content to continue to allow her parents to do all the heavy lifting of raising her son, while she continues to behave like a much older sister who sees her son/brother when she’s not busy doing other things. Maybe that was what her parents agreed to when Elliott was born? Maybe Peach’s gave up her parental rights and her parents adopted him? We don’t really know because Pepper doesn’t tell us. All we know that as now a 22 year old adult, Peaches still leaves the parenting of her child to her parents. Adrian, Peach’s teenage crush and the boy’s father has even less involvement in his kid’s life. Less as in none.
And part of my problem with this story is that her BFF Nisha whom she’s been friends with since middle school had no idea she was having sex with a classmate when she was fifteen. Because BFFs wouldn’t share that kind of information with each other right? Not only didn’t Nisha not know Peaches was having sex, but like Peaches she had no clue that Peaches was pregnant or even that she had given birth. Was she away at summer camp or something when that all went down? It's not like after giving birth Peaches was going to be out riding her bike the next day or week. How heavy was Peaches at 15 that she could carry a pregnancy to term and nobody noticed she was pregnant? Not her parents or teachers or her pediatrician. She certainly would have had to have been more than chubby for that to have happened. And also although she’s not the first female to give birth claiming she never knew she was pregnant and she was only 15, I still have a hard time believing a girl or a woman can carry a baby for nine months and not notice all the changes to her body or feel her unborn child move within her. Being pregnant for nine months involves more than missing your period. Nisha also didn’t find it odd that Peach’s mother suddenly gave birth to a baby even though there was no mention of her being pregnant. Which you would think being best friends would have come up in their conversations. And if I got this story right Peaches gave birth in a bathtub while her parents were away. What parents leave their fifteen year old daughter home alone overnight?
While I’m on the subject of parents, let’s talk about Peach’s mother and father. She confesses to Peaches that at Peach’s age she had a brief torrid affair with a famous married man who then paid her a lot of hush money to keep their fling quiet. I’m not certain which I find more disturbing, the fact that she had an affair with a married man whom she was dropping her panties for at work 20 minutes after meeting him, or that she accepted his hush money payment? I guess Peaches comes by her lack of judgement honestly. Oh, and Peach’s father knows about the affair and has no problem with how much his wife enjoys watching her ex-lover’s movies. He even tries to get into shape when one of his movies comes out to try and compete with his wife’s attraction to the action movie star. Yeah, these people are messed up.
I
ve written all of this and I haven’t even talked about the books male lead actor Dalton DiAngelo who plays the lead character, a vampire, on a popular television show. I actually thought Dalton was a pretty good if a bit clueless guy until the end of this story when it appears he really was pretty much using his relationship with Peaches as research for a movie role which would make him a cad. But that will all have to be resolved in the next book because this book ends in a cliff hanger. Something else I don’t enjoy. In fact if I’m reading correctly there are three more books in this series all featuring Peaches and I assume Dalton. To be honest I’m not the least bit tempted to read them. I will give the author credit that I often found Peaches to be capable of some fairly witty dialogue and snappy retorts. Oh and if you enjoy PG rated contemporary romance you’ll enjoy that fact that there is no foul language and the sex is strictly PG While the Peaches character makes it abundantly clear she and Dalton had sex, this book is strictly PG with as she says leading into their first and from what I could tell only sexual encounter, “fade to black” like they do on public television and PG movies when the couple is about to get busy. So this book is safe for both moms and their teen daughters. Unless of course those moms have issues with their daughter reading a book where the 22 year old lead is sexually active, has a child she's content to let her parent's raise as their own and likes to drink.

This is my review of the audio version as posted on Audible:

I like Angie Pepper's books - they are warm, funny and entertaining, with characters that are likeable and full of life. This one also follows that pattern with one exception: it has a cliffhanger ending - and I really hate cliffhangers...

The story is quite fast paced, the characters make you love them from the start, the plot twists quite a lot and has a few surprises for you, and that makes it a great read/listen. The cliffhanger ending is a big disappoitment, though.
Now, don't get me wrong, I know the book is part one of a series, but the description of the book doesn't warn you at all that you need to read/listen to part 2 (and probably more) to get the whole story... So, this is not the kind of series in which you have several books with each book telling you a complete story set among the same circle of characters; this is the kind of series in which you need to have all the books to find out how it finally ends... Which is not bad at all, I just didn't expect it, used to other series by Ms Pepper I listened to so far being the first type of series...:)

But as I said - it's a really entertaining listen, Peaches Monroe being a likeable main character, with great sense of humour and lively personality, and some secrets of her own. Her love interests are equally well-written, with more to them than just good looks. Background characters are also quite colourful, so you probably will want to listen on. I know I do:)

Narration by Ms Williams is great:) She is a very good narrator, giving the individual characters room to shine in her interpretation, and she also reads at a good pace.

Generally, it's a very nice listen for a lazy afternoon:)

Fun Start to a Rebooted Series . . .

This is a delightful story promising more to come! Peaches runs a bookstore and one day gets the surprise of her life when Dalton Deangelo, a well-known actor who plays a vampire in her favorite soap opera, runs into the bookstore to hide out from the invasive press. Their connection is instantaneous as their comfortable relationship begins to become evident. He seems to like her for who she is, reducing any anxiety about her curves, and makes his feelings clear when he becomes her date for her cousin’s wedding. Her supportive family, of course, loved him! Is this the start of something special for both of them? Can sweet Peaches handle the pressures of being so close to a celebrity? Or is he worth all of that and more?

The reader will love the characters and the story line is well-paced and amusing. Peaches and Dalton are important to us and we can share in their good times and bad. Grab your copy because this is only the beginning as we stop on the cliffhanger and wait to leap into Book 2! Don’t miss the jump!

Engaging, charming story. Like the other books I read from this author already, this was a well-written, enjoyable page-turner. Nice to read about curvy girls getting the handsome hunk, showing that not every man likes cat-walk thin tall girls. Tastes, thankfully are as varied as there are body types. The characters were likeable and very well described, as were the other supporting participants. The storyline is segmented into different episodes and having read only the first, it does end on a cliff-hanger. I prefer standalone novels because I am now missing the other episodes. The story of Peaches and Dalton is engaging and now I want to know how their lives will turn out. This first book ends on a dramatic high note but I am an optimist and will definitely look out for the subsequent episodes of this series. I liked the author's easy-going, witty style to bring a story across and would happily recommend this book

Years ago I grabbed a booked about a woman named Peaches, but it got lost in the TBR. Now we have a newly revamped version made even more glorious and it’s written with characters that are connected to the Baker Street series, loosely. Peaches runs a bookstore, has wonderful curves and a fantastic family. Somehow a hot guy/well known actor drops into her store and changes everything. They connect like old friends with the easiest banter even an old married couple could never achieve. However, like any curvy girl she’s self conscious about her figure but she has a ton of confidence outside of that. It takes a bit for her to realize this guy likes her for her and not her body. This is a four part series, so yes there is a bit of a cliffhanger at the end but not to worry I believe all the books are being rereleased/revamped at the same time. I was lucky to receive an early copy and was able to write my voluntary review before release. Now, on to book two.

Peaches (Petra) is in her bridesmaid dress and about to go to her cousin's Wedding, and she didn't expect Dalton, a fairly known actor to knock her off her chair. She saved him from the bitter press that were trying to chase him down, and he invites himself to join her, as her plus one for the Wedding. She can't believe her good luck, but having a known actor in your life is going to bring dramas, for everyone wants their piece of sexy Dalton. I loved the humour, sass, and how lovable I found Peaches (she certainly isn't perfect, but she is lots of fun). And Dalton might be an actor, but he is very approachable and easy to love. I look forward to reading the next book in this series, for it's left me gasping (what happens next?).

I received this as an ARC to read and review. This is such a charming story about Peaches Monroe and her adventures with a handsome movie star and the curves that life throws her way. Peaches works in a bookstore (my favorite place to be) when a movie star comes running in looking for a place to hide. From that point on the fun begins for Peaches. This first story was just so much fun to read. I found myself laughing out loud a lot and I live alone. So many fun happenings and some really startling facts about Peaches life come to light. There is also an ex-boyfriend who is trying to get back in Peaches life - not going to happen (I hope) and a stunning cliffhanger ending. I am going to start book 2 now because I know it's going to be just as fun and exciting as the first one.  This author never, ever disappoints

This is the first book in the series. This book starts off fast and amazing. Peaches is off to her cousins wedding but before she does she meets Dalton when he runs into her store and she literally falls for him. Not only does she fall for Dalton but a blast from her past Adrian is back home for good. This book has so much humor in it that you will be laughing through most of the book. I love Peaches humor and personality. Dalton is a famous actor who keeps finding ways to spend time with Peaches but is it real or acting. Adrian is real and I just can not wait to read the next part to see where these 3 end up.

This book was filled with a lot of hilarious moments, something I wasn't expecting. Several well developed characters that play key roles in the plot, and sub plot. A twist I didn't see coming (and I am NOT a spoiler). You'll just have to read this excellent story and discover it for yourself! It is part of a series, and I am certainly looking forward to reading more, especially after the cliff hanger ending of Part 1! It was previously released under a different title in 2013 according to the author, who decided to give it a "reboot" with new material added. I have not read the previous edition, so I cannot comment or compare. However, I can tell you it is well worth reading! :)

This is book one in The Peaches Monroe's Diary Series and it is Peaches and Dalton story. Peaches managed a book store in her home town and what starts off as a normal morning changes when the door flies open and in comes Dalton Deangelo like a tornado knocking her into his arms and yes he is a famous actor and her crush so she hides him from the press and that is what starts there story. Omg I absolutely love this book and it is a laugh a minute with everything that these two get up too and I can't wait to read the next book to see what will happen next and what a cliff hanger. Just remember that this book is not a standalone one and you will have to read all four books.

This four book series is off to a good start with book one. We meet Peaches and Dalton. These two together are so funny! Dalton especially stole my heart from the very beginning. Dalton is a famous actor and Peaches is a bookstore owner. They meet while he’s running from the paparazzi and he hides out in her store. I love these two together but life of a famous person is a hindrance. This book leaves us with a major cliffhanger going into book 2 with another man interested in Peaches and some fall out from her time with Dalton. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

In this first book of Petra “Peaches” Monroe, she meets her favorite vampire actor, Dalton Deangelo in a precarious situation. Dalton seems to be interested in Peaches and they go out. An old flame moves back to town to confuse things a little. Several secrets from many different people in Peaches life are revealed and many more are still hidden as this romance takes flight and some scandals are made. Good, strong characters with a story with real life issues has this interesting and fun but emotional. Stops on a cliffhanger so can’t wait to finish.

Angela Pepper writing as Angie Pepper. Another ball park worthy.hit. This time it is a paranormal romance aka in the Sookie Stackhouse tradition.

A short read but chockful of excitement and witty banter and fun. Exactly what I like about Angie/Angela's characters. I especially like the clean romance (no explicit sexual scenes with throbbing man holds or heaving bosoms. 50 shades of Grey this isn't.) Combine a media heart throb darling with a regular girl and the jealousy begins.
This is part of a series so don't worry the fun continues.
There is a phase that sticks out from early in the book, "meat puppet'. Enjoy

A girl called Peaches. I really liked this girl, her manner and attitude to life. There were some eyebrow raising moments, anticipation and budding relationships. Every girl needs a staunch supporter and peaches has one in her room mate and childhood friend. In particular there was a really big OMG moment which I cannot say more about- You will love it. The end of the story finishes with a lead into the next book, so I am looking forward to that being released. The narrator has a beautiful voice and is perfect for Peaches. Recommended

I really enjoyed this story, I like the way characters from the previous books make appearances, Peaches is a real fun girl, with a lot of depth, I can’t wait to carry on with her story in part 2. Not many books make me laugh out loud one minute and then have me concerned in the next, such is the quality of the character portrayal, I really feel I know Peaches and am sharing her ups and downs is a privilege.
Highly recommended enjoyable read

This is book number one out of four and it ends on a cliffhanger which is the only reason that it did not get a higher star rating from me. I really hate cliffhangers! The story itself is really cute, quirky, and very well-written and the reader falls in love with the characters right away. As much as I dislike cliffhangers I will be reading the rest of the books because I simply Have to find out what happens between Peaches and Dalton!

Handful of Peaches (Peaches Monroe's Diary Book One) was a great read by Angie Pepper. Dalton Deangelo is a famous actor who goes into a bookstore to hide from the press. Peaches was running the bookstore and they instantly clicked. Dalton asked if he could escort Peaches to her cousins wedding since she didn't have a date. After that they found themselves in scandal after scandal. I enjoyed reading this book and cant wait to read the rest of the series.

A sweet, clean romance read that is sure to please. This is Peaches and Dalton's story. If you've read this author before, you may see camo appearances from other characters in previous reads. This is the first of a series of four and so should not be read as a stand alone. Fun and engaging characters with a good storyline - I'm eager to read more!

Very quick read. I liked all the characters. I loved the banter between Peaches and Dalton, Peaches is very sassy. My dislikes are the cover on the book, Peaches is a curvy girl I do not see this. There is also a good amount of repetitive info to be annoying. This ends with a cliffhanger to be continued in the next book. I will be reading the rest of Peaches story.

Take a curvaceous girl and a vampire, and add to them scandal, confusion, family affairs, books, some hilarious situations, and then you have a great story that takes the stress off you and makes you laugh. The first book in the series is fun and easy to read and very good entertainment. Looking forward to reading the next one!

Cute and sweet romance with humorous witty banter. The book store girl and the vampire playing actor make for an interesting, entertaining, and likable couple. The narrator did a great job with providing unique voices for each character and appropriate tone inflections for each scene. I absolutely love romantic comedies and if the story is written in the first person point of view it's even a bigger plus. I really enjoyed this story because it really made me laugh. It reminded me of Lindsey Kelk's books which is my favorite comedic author.

This book has a bit of a rough start..writing style wise. It’s a bit confusing and muddled. Many things could be explained better. Luckily it does get better. Peaches is an eccentric girl that will have you shaking your head and rolling your eyes.

A great story of a young girl who looks down on herself because she’s a bit curvy. She meets a handsome actor who falls for her. She gets mixed up in some of his personal problems which ends up giving her a boost in her self image. Then through a mistake her world falls apart. It’s heartbreaking as you feel her betrayal. So looking forward to the next book to see how she recovers from this.
