Justine's father dies and her life becomes bound to the whims of her Uncle until she meets a cunning one living in the woods. At the Rivers of Hell is a gothic tale following Justine's struggle to claim control over her life whilst her Uncle seeks to dominate. Witchcraft, a gothic abbey, a dark and twisted wood, and a mysterious cave are to be explored if you chose to read on.
Griffin's prose evokes that atmospheric, otherworldly tone that can come only from the most beloved of classical Gothic authors. His writing is utterly lyrical, his descriptions lush and brimming with elegant, indelible imagery as we follow Justine's descent into Hell and the deepest depths of her own soul.
Abundant in metaphor and allegory, At the Rivers of Hell is a short but stirring tale that will leave a mark upon you with its strikingly haunting prose.
Creepy and intriguing. I loved the dark turn that the story took and that it sounded like something that would have been written long ago. I wish though the book had been expanded, to build the tension even more and immerse us further into Justine's world. Definitely recommend!
