Magical, sexy, tropical, and terrifying — Mushroom Honeymoon follows a couple's psychedelic quest for harmony and love, despite physical and mental obstacles.
Newly married, Saman wants to be a wonderful husband, but serious health concerns are affecting his daily life and marriage. To improve his situation, he undergoes a kidney transplant, but the procedure leads to as many complications as solutions to his problems.
After the operation, Saman’s wife, Thelma, plans a belated honeymoon to Hawaii, hoping it will help her troubled husband relax. Before they leave, a friend gives Thelma the contact of a wealthy entrepreneur who hosts transcendental magic mushroom (psilocybin) and psilohuasca (ayahuasca component + magic mushrooms) ceremonies on his secluded Hawaiian estate. Based on her own visions and transformative experiences with psychedelics, Thelma believes the ceremony may benefit Saman, and she books the psychedelic retreat.
As the couple explores the lush landscape of Hawaii, the trip reveals the strengths and weaknesses of their bond. Saman grows hesitant to attend the mushroom ceremony, while Thelma becomes convinced that it’s exactly what her husband needs. What she doesn’t realize is that Saman harbors a secret that could threaten more than just their marriage.
Is the honeymoon of their love only beginning? Or will Saman’s dishonesty lead to the destruction of their relationship?
In Mushroom Honeymoon, Charlotte Dune creates an emotional and supernatural romance, teaming with visionary energy and surreal hallucinations, taking the reader deep into the psyches of two incomplete individuals seeking to emerge together in wholeness and love.
Mushroom Honeymoon, book two in The Psychedelic Love Series, can be read as a standalone or in sequence. It picks up where Cactus Friends: A Psychedelic Love Story leaves off and explores how unexpected health problems can challenge even the most committed lovers.

"Pain. The word traveled to his brain. He imagined it traveling through his neurons like a drop of dew on the spider's web. The web was like the constellations and he sensed the scale of the universe inside his cells."
Following a botched kidney transplant, two newlyweds embark on their honeymoon where they're forced to face the issues starting to erode their happy union.
This book is part 2 of (at least) a 3-part series. I read Cactus Friends last year and enjoyed it but I really loved this book!
While book 1 is very much about Thelma and her journey, Mushroom Honeymoon focuses on her husband Saman.
As a person who has suffered from an absurd amount of medical catastrophe in my life, I deeply related to Saman's outrage and inability to unstick himself from medical-induced PTSD. Dune's portrayal of how that anger infiltrates so many aspects of his life, and starts to chip away at his relationships both with others and himself, is thoughtful and honest.
Dune dives into the world of psychedelic assisted psychotherapy, as administered by the alternative community using natural plant medicines, and I gleaned a very clear grasp of the benefits and drawbacks of engaging in these ceremonies. Enough to try it? Not yet but I haven't read book 3 yet.
While on their honeymoon we meet some interesting characters who raise some very timely questions surrounding ethics and integrity. This book was more concluded than Cactus Friends and left me quite satisfied, yet I am still rather curious about a few unraveled threads...
Dune's writing is well-paced, her character development is strong and authentic, and her plot twists compelling and believable. She conveys the story through an effective combination of dialogue, action, and reaction utilizing a narrative style I thoroughly enjoyed.
Book 3 will be out in 2023 and I am really looking forward to it!
I'm not normally one for romance novels, but the combination of a love story and psychedelic experiences is rather unique. This is the second in the Psychedelic Love Series and book two picks up where book one left off. Charlotte is very good at setting the stage, writing descriptively the lush tropical surroundings of Hawaii. But she does not ramble, as many novels tend to get too wordy and I can't finish. Too simple a plot leaves me with feeling bored.
This book gets it just right as Thelma and Saman face the first serious issue of their nascent marriage. The problem gets deeper as the novel continues, and while it is subtle, it builds and by the end you're on the edge of your seat. Charlotte's descriptive writing is especially vivid during the plant ceremony.
Since there's another book coming after this one, of COURSE the plot leaves you hanging, wondering what comes next. You're definitely left satisfied, and yet insatiably curious as to what will happen next. We just have to be patient and wait until the next book.
Great story! I couldn't put it down. Charlotte Dune is a talented story teller and writer. Mushroom Honeymoon caught me from the first page. It is the story of a young, newly married couple who have their share of life challenges but who also share the same interests. It is also an interesting read for anyone who has ever considered undertaking a psychedelic experience and may want more insight into the methods available and the possible outcomes. Kudos to Charlotte for a great book!
This is a little darker book than Cactus Friends, the first book in this series, but it’s also much more suspenseful, and I liked this one the most.
Saman is struggling; with his need for a kidney transplant and subsequent complications, and more as the book progresses. But Saman’s love for Thelma rings true in spite of his inner darkness, and the plant based medicine scenes are taught, truly trippy and at times terrifying.
To me, this novel showcases the other side of plant-based medicine, where it can have positive effects, but the trip there is not easy.
Full of taught sexual energy, this is a fast, enjoyable, and thought-provoking read that takes you from the Florida sunshine to Hawaii on the trip of a lifetime.
In Mushroom Honeymoon, Saman and Thelma’s long-awaited honeymoon is turning into anything but a honeymoon. Saman’s serious health issues take on new complications as he struggles through experiences he is ill-equipped to cope with. There were haunting scenes in this book at kept me up at night, but ultimately it was the riveting story that kept me reading way past midnight. If you are looking to read a unique story, this is the one. Well-written and deeply engrossing, you will not soon forget this book.
This book was hard to put down! The reader is invested into the love story of Thelma and Saman from the moment they turn the first page. The newlyweds begin their marriage with a kidney transplant that sets the course of their honeymoon in Hawaii. Similar to the transformative entheogenic plants consumed in the story, the couple struggles through romantic tension to find harmony.
Love book #2! I love how the author takes you on the journey with her. I truly could almost smell the tropical flowers. And although it’s been over 40 years since I was on the Big Island it sounded as if nothing has changed. It brought back great memories. Can’t wait for book #3.
