The beginning of the summer holidays should be a time of rest and relaxation, but Brynn Finley is not able to shake the ominous feeling that something terrible is about to happen. Phaedra the sea witch still has the Deep Sea Scroll, and when a series of mysterious thefts are reported all around the ocean, Brynn has the sneaking suspicion Phaedra is behind them all. Desperate to stop Phaedra before she summons the Great Old One, Brynn and her friends take matters into their own hands to save the world they love from being destroyed.
This epic conclusion to the A Mermaid in Middle Grade series ties elements from the other five stories into an action-packed narrative. Like in the other books, Brynn and her friends are the first to realize what Phaedra is planning, and they must combine their unique skills and talents to put a stop to her dastardly plans. Through collaboration, perseverance, and an adherence to the merfolk oath, the four young merpeople are prepared to do whatever it takes to protect both the oceans and the unsuspecting humans on land.
Excellent writing and believable dialogue keep readers engaged in this story as fantastic creatures and mer-magic make their appearance throughout. The struggles the characters face have the potential to escalate to violence, but in keeping with their pledged oath, the youth make kinder decisions, instead. An action-centered plot and cinematic descriptions make it easy for middle grade readers to visualize the narrative throughout the book.
In each installment in this series, Brynn makes mistakes and learns from them, and this story is no exception. With each mis-step, Brynn is determined to try a different approach to achieve her goal. Though this is not always easy, Brynn’s behavior is likely to be modeled by young readers as they face challenges of their own. With a strong moral and overwhelming message of harmony among all living things, this is an excellent series for young readers who love the ocean and the many wonderful creatures it contains.
I received a copy of this book from the author and I chose to leave this review.
Brynn is at it again. What will she and her friends do when Phedera wakes the Great Old One? Will they get back the golden trident? Or will this be their last adventure? You know Brynn by now and know she will save the day of course. Great series of books. My daughter and I both loved them all.
