I am back with yet another review. I am very grateful to the author Stephen Haunts for sharing the book with me in exchange for review. Thank you Booktasters for giving me this opportunity.

When I read the title, I was totally intrigued. Reluctant entrepreneur is something I relate to easily. I do have many goals to achieve, but many things stop me from pursuing. And that’s when I am gifted this.

The author kickstarts the whole process highlighting the problems associated with working under someone – at the same time he does not over glorify being self-employed. He maintains balance between pros and cons of both being employed and self-employed – which is very useful in deciding whether we are ready to become an entrepreneur. This book isn’t intended to be a read only, self-help book. Every chapter contains workshop questions which we need to answer to get clear about our own visions and goals. The questions are clear and precise.

Every chapter is concise, packed with essential information. What I loved the most about the book is that the author shares his own journey to illustrate how we can tackle those hurdles similarly. He also touches on topics which are not often discussed – income strategy, taxes, pensions etc. One can take the principle and apply irrespective which place or situation we are in.

The author manages to cover almost all the essentials relating to starting a small business including branding and marketing.

If you’re looking forward to becoming an entrepreneur and lack a direction – this book will be of immense help! This book helps in translating the ideas in our mind into a concrete plan on the paper. Thanks to this book, I learned what is a “Side hustle”.

Please do grab this book!

The book starts with a very clear vision as the author himself has been in the shoes of someone who was hesitant about going his own way.
I love how methodical the book is, like the first chapter points why working under employer might not be for you, going next to both advantages and disadvantages, adding his own experience and finally a small exercise for the reader.
Next you move on to how to start and the author mentions side hustle. The format for content follows the same as 1st chapter in all the next chapters. It was refreshing to see the next chapter dedicated to income planning. Many times motivational speakers focus too much on encouraging you to start but don't give equal emphasis on the income strategy with both it's pros and cons. Which is followed up well in the next chapter as well. To summarise I really like how there is not major upheavaling happening and everything happens in smooth transition. Another greta addition (albiet a small chapter) was when not to go self employed which I felt is equally important and also on flip side emphasis on how success would mean different to everyone and we need to decide what it would mean for us. The next few bits about product charges and marketing and few chapters about branding and hiring were nothing out of the box or different than other similar books. Also chapters such as working environment and digital nomad could have been combined as lots of overlapping content. Mentorship, mental and physical well being and focused became a tad bit too philosophical.
So what impressed me the most was the tone of the book, it's not aggressive or passive agressive, it actually is written as way for you to find your path but also reuqires a bit of editing to maybe let go with overlapping or general content.

The Path to Freedom by Stephen Haunts was an extraordinary book on the process of starting, maintaining, and growing a business on a part time or full time basis. I've read many such books in the past and I thought I knew everything that would be covered but this book goes well beyond anything I had read before on the subject matter. There is not a thing the author left out in the process from figuring out what skill or talent you possess that can be leveraged into a business or side hustle to operating a business in 21st century information society.

There were so many topics such as tax preparation, office/work space, pro and cons of being and employee, pro and cons of taking a business full time, etc. The most important thing covered in this book is the anxiety everyone faces, myself included, when it comes to even starting a business whether it’s full or part time. The author cites examples from his own life on how he dealt with not only the technical and legal aspects of starting and running a business but how he managed and planned for the anxiety of failure behind starting a business and quitting a well-paying job. It evident that the author took into account real life concerns many people have when deciding to work for themselves through his training sessions and feedback from his other projects. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has thought about starting their own business.

The book starts with convincing the readers of their abilities and describes the life of one in two different situations for each career-wise decision which we take and how it affects different things such as our personal life, productivity, income vs. expenditures. We can understand it not is a way of a professional entrepreneur but as a person who has been struggling with ideas and creativity and not a suitable platform to express them. The idea is more of start-with-baby-steps rather than face the odds altogether and the thought expression of the reader is triggered to choose for their own instead of the author's success mantra and forcing it on readers instead, the aspects are explained with consequences faced by the author. The necessities of starting a business are given more importance than the requirements that make it look eloquent. When reading with literal meaning the book looks like the book is for adults but in sense can be used by anyone to elevate and work with their idea.
In a nutshell, It says anyone can become self-employed/entrepreneur with an idea that works...

Stephen Haunt's "The Path to Freedom: Starting a Business for the Reluctant Entrepreneur" more than simply another book telling you how to start a business. In his book Haunt does a great job weaving the how to's of starting a business, with his personal experiences and sharing the pros and cons of each step along the way. This makes the book significantly more well thought out and, as a result, useful and interesting to read than many of the cookie cutter books on starting a business. Rather than presenting some pie in the sky ideas, Haunt lets you in on what the experience is really like while shining a light on the choices you'll make so you can make informed decisions about your own business. If you're looking to start a business, this is a great choice to read from someone who did it. It's a relatable book for everyone.

When I downloaded this book I wasn't sure what to expect, as I have read quite a few books that kinda rehashed common sense and didn't offer much in the way of real help. I am the definition of a reluctant entrepreneur, as I have the desire to do things, but I didn't have any idea where to start. This book covers pretty much all the bases.

As I was reading, my mind would bring up questions, but the author fills in all your blanks. It doesn't matter what kind of business you wish to start, or if it's hobby, part time or full time, you're going to find all that information here, including sources so you can find more. There is no glossing over the down sides either, and he doesn't try to give you false promises or get rich quick schemes, just the knowledge you need to get started on your journey.

The Path to Freedom is highly recommended by Stevo's Novel Ideas. You have a great product, service, or idea for a side gig or small business, but without knowing the basics you are doomed to failure. Most helpful to me are Haunt's tips for getting and growing online, protecting your reputation, and not being afraid of customer feedback.
