From within the confines of the family shed, Sarah makes a decision that cannot be undone. Afterward, she awakens in a perilous world overrun with horrific monstrosities and grueling tribulations. Sarah must discover the reason why she was brought here and find a way home before she succumbs to her inner demons.
I'm going to keep this short as it feels like anything I say might be a spoiler. I'm not a huge fan of time loop type reads but every once in a while one will work for me and to be honest, at the beginning of this one, I wasn't sure. This one doesn't quite fit into the normal groundhog day's type reads and for under 150 pages, tells its story very well.
Sarah's story is a reflection of her life, wrought with monsters, and finding her way back to face the very serious decision she made prior to being caught in this infinite loop of inner demons. There's a very good lesson to learn within these pages. This almost acid trip like journey via Sarah's mind is somber and fascinating and gave me a satisfying ending.

Melancholia by Matt Wildasin is a gut-wrenching tale about a girl that makes a devastating choice that changes everything. Filled to the brim with body horror, this is a book that will suck you in and continuously make you lose your breath as it hits you again and again with the terror.
Content Warning: Suicide
While this may be a difficult read for some, I very highly recommend it! The path that Matt takes readers on is true gut-punch emotional horror at it’s finest.
Reading this book and managing to actually finish it was quite a struggle for me. Nothing about it grabbed my interest and I almost immediately wanted it to be over after I first started it. It just didn’t tick any of my boxes and I’m really sad because I really wanted to love it. Such a great cover and great title but not much else between the pages to grab my interest.
This story starts with suicide and then her problems really begin. This story feels like our main character is living inside a Silent Hill game and must navigate her way back to reality. You will cheer her on and she starts to understand and learns to fight for her survival.
Wow. This was one hell of a read. Matt Wildasin at his absolute best. Go get a copy and just dive in. You won’t regret it. I started this tale thinking ‘Oh my...’ and ended it with a lump in my throat. Brilliant stuff and an easy 5 stars.
Matt Wildasin knows how to hit you right in the gut. Like, right on the first page he socks you and says this is what my story is going to be, get ready for the ride! And you know what, he keeps that feeling going through the whole thing. This is an emotional, deep novella that captures depression and how it affects us.
Wildasin definitely bleeds on the pages here. Depression and what it means can be a tough subject to cover. But, he does it without exploiting it or using it as a crutch. This feels real and hits me deep a number of times. I feel for the main character and what she is going through. It may be tough for some to read, but I think Wildasin manages to do the topic justice.
This is a time loop type of story, where Sarah, the main character, is stuck on reset. We've seen this done before, some times good and some times bad. In Melancholia's case, it's done well. She's not using this time for fun or being goofy, she is trying to get out of this place and the repeating is frustrating. I also think it works quite well for this book, building the story and giving you more about the character. I loved it.
Wildasain delivers a tight, dark exploration of a young woman dealing with her depression while trying to get out of a nightmare world.
In this disturbing, impactful story, Sarah sets events in motion that sets her on a journey full of terror, monsters, pain and death. All in a world unlike anything she (or we) have experienced before. If you like having everything explained and understanding why things are happening, this story may not be for you. But if you don't mind just going with the flow, and sharing the experiences of someone trying to find a transition from here to THERE, the journey is worth it, emotional and hard-hitting. Just punch your ticket and ride the roller-coaster to the end.
It's the kind of story that makes me want to sit down with the author over a pint and talk about that world, and the entities there, and the machinations going on between the pages. I hope Wildasin revisits that place again someday.
It's a story that's stayed with me and that's a good thing. A very good bad trip.
Warning: This book is about suicide and the possible consequences.
Sarah makes an attempt with suicide. What happens after is a story of pain, joy, and sadness. It’s obvious what is happening as you progress through the time loop. As her day keeps repeating she is attempting to find out why she is where she is and how to escape from it. Her journey is terrifying and reminded me of the games Silent Hill and Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice. This is a well written and thought out story that will grab you and won’t let go. The final chapter will explain what really happened prior to the attempt and what comes next. The time loop is definitely ground hog day but she never once gives in as she constantly wants freedom.

I’m keeping this one short because saying too much would spoil the journey.
Melancholia is a surreal exploration of the aftermath of a life altering decision. A horror groundhogs day, where Sarah has to battle manifestations of her inner demons. Can she figure out how to escape this world? Will she make it out with her life?

I really loved this book so much. I don't want to say all the things I loved about it because I feel it might spoil it for some. It was creepy, exciting, frustrating, sad and kept me wanting to read just one more page when I knew I had to put the book down. This one has been sitting on my shelf for a little while and I wish I'd have read it sooner. Will definitely be reading more from this author.
Melancholia is the tale of a girl trapped in a nightmare reality forced to face her fears and inner struggles. Dark and twisted imagery abound in this creepy novella. Melancholia is Matt Wildasin at his finest, deep diving into mental and emotional horrors. Highly recommended.
3.5 stars. While some of the symbolism passed me by, this commentary on mental illness was a powerful read. There are a few errors in this one as well.
