The Connected Therapist: Relating Through the Senses

Rate this book
An audiobook about an OT (occupational therapist) who studied Dr. Bruce Perry's work, Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI), and then found healing for her own family and the families she serves.

In this three-part title, Marti discusses how trauma-aware research transformed her own therapy practice from behavior to connection-focused. The senses are explored in relation to how adverse experience shapes our preferences and sensory processing abilities. The final section reveals resources and practical strategies to help select best practices and sensory-based strategies that promote healing through activity

Marti enthusiastically shares her wisdom and experiences while remaining so beautifully human and humble. She reminds us that no matter who we are, what we know, and what we do, we can pause and bring curiosity to a current situation to better help kids learn and grow. She takes sensory and developmental neuroscience concepts and makes complex information understandable while graciously sharing her work through simple, cost-effective strategies in this book, and through her KALMAR app. A must read for parents, caregivers, therapists, educators… anyone who spends time with kids!

This answered a lot of questions I didn't know I had. Like why do children who scream not hear how loud they are? Because they're bodies protect their own ears. Rarely do I find a book that helps me reframe so many things my students do. I interested all my fellow special education teachers in it too.

This book was so helpful! It’s an easy and enjoyable read while also providing tangible strategies to try during therapy sessions. This book helped me understand the sensory system as a whole better and how to help kids regulate.

Incredible resource for sensory-based interventions for therapists who are not OTs.

Some of it was review. But there were also some really good explanations and practical applications in sensory diet development. Will be thinking about this book for a while to come.
