Fate's Arrow: Robeaux

Rate this book
You’re only guilty if they catch up to you.

The past three years for Caspian Robeaux have been a living hell. From being courtmartialed for standing up for what was right, to almost being killed on “parole”, he’s had enough of the Coalition. But his dissatisfaction only leaves one other option for his future: the Sargan Commonwealth.

When an attack on the planet he’s living on leaves him with nothing left to his name, he’ll have to start making some shady deals if he wants to survive. One of which involves going back to the organization he just escaped. And this time if they catch him, there may be no way to avoid his fate.

Fate's Arrow: Robeaux is the first novella in the Infinity's End Legacy series, a group of one-shot stories about the characters from Infinity's End.

For those of us Caspian Robeaux and Box fans, this prequel to the Infinity Series is a great ride with these two characters. Without spoiling anything, it was fun to travel the universe with the earlier, less refined, Cas and Box as we first met them in the series. If you've read the series, you know; if you haven't, then come aboard for some great SciFi storytelling.

Only a genius or someone with incredible luck could have made it this far with all his parts intact, and Cas knows he’s not that smart.
His peace is short lived, when raiders invade the planet and steal what little he’s scavenged.
He must return but what will now be his fate.
Another epis Sci-fi do not miss out on this one.

A very easy read wth lots of comings and goings. I loved the taking sides and the subterfuge. None of which I will tell you about, of course.

Box and Caspian's relationship is not quite what we readers are used to, as they are sort of sounding each other out being new, so they are a wee bit reserved. Yes, your eyes do not deceive you, I did say "reserved" and "Box" in the same sentence.

Very enjoyable piece of work and I'm looking forward to reading more in this series.

Received as an ARC copy, this is an honest review. Caspian Robeaux has escaped certain death on Kathora; but he and his new co-pilot robot named Box have not escaped the constant struggle to survive on Froma, on the outskirts within the Sargan Commonwealth. When unexpected raid removes the only thread keeping their lives stable; forces Caspian and Box to take a new path to a better future. Their journey takes them to the heart of the Commonwealth with Caspian bargaining his knowledge of the Coalition in return for a ship of his own. Brazen in his negotiations with the Warlord Keemar endears Caspian enough to be rewarded with a job: steal the USCS Vale from a Coalition junkyard. While the task goes off without a lot of trouble, they discover 'just' why this ship was left in the junkyard. Caspian may have escaped the Coalition but he can't just abandon his morals when there are others with dangerous ambitions that will cost lives. Putting everything on the line... once again leaving Caspian and Box fighting to survive once again- now a powerful Sargan Warlord seeking revenge; as Caspian fights not to surrender his moral compass. A haunting confrontation that will have Caspian staring down his own personal darkness that will leave him a different kind of person. In an twist of irony, it's another Warlord in the Commonwealth, Veena Visvaxis that could provide the salvation and a future both Caspian and Box have been desperately seeking. But what kind of person will Caspian become to make it all work? Journey back into the beautifully complex universe of the Infinity's End series, deviling deep into memorable characters and unveiling who they truly are and who they'll become. Highly recommended

Fate’s Arrow: Robeaux is the start of a short story series that looks at the history of one of the main characters from the Infinity’s End Saga, and to start the series off of course is Cas and Box.
This is a Novella, so it is a short story, but Warren manages to pack a lot into this adventure, giving us not only some extra insight into Cas, and just as interestingly, we get to learn a lot about Box to.
The story starts not long after Cas has jumped ship from the Coalition, having stolen a Coalition shuttle with Box and headed to Sargan space.
They are currently on Froma, a Sargan controlled world, and whilst trying to work out a plan to get off world, Froma is raided by a rival Warlord, and the shuttle, and everything they own is taken, leaving Cas in a desperate position.
From here, we get to really understand what happened to Cas, in a way, what turned him to the Sargan way.
This is a really intriguing story from the very start, as whilst we have read about the Sargan Commonwealth previously, in Caspian’s Fortune, Cas had been part of the Commonwealth for some time, and was well entrenched in its ways.
Whilst at the start of this story, we get to see a Cas that is new to it all, and although he has an understanding of how things are done in Sargan space, he is still a Coalition Citizen, a Coalition Officer, not yet willing to cross those boundaries and do the things that really keep you alive and thriving in the Commonwealth.
The Infinity’s End Saga – whether it is the original series, the current ‘Stellar Outlaw’ series, or this new Short Story series, have all had a deep, gritty psychological edge to them, delving into the psyche of each of the characters to truly understand what makes them tick, what they are thinking, and both their intellectual and emotional motivations as they work their way through these incredible stories. Warren’s characters have been a true highlight of each and every one of the books in this series, and Fate’s Arrow: Robeaux is no exception.
The other aspect of these stories that has been beyond exceptional, is the Galaxy/World building, which has been so complex and intricate, bringing to life minute details of the smallest characters, to the biggest cities and starships, each getting just as much attention. Warren is brilliant in his ability to describe stunning cityscapes etc, bringing them to life, without taking up whole pages, and with a couple of words, letting us know what a Robot, with no facial expressions, is thinking of Cas without uttering a word, but with just a look. The depth of world building is just magnificent, and is one of the very special qualities of these books, that make it an absolute standout to so many other Sci-Fi series.
It would not be a Cas Robeaux story without Box, and he is here in all his glory in this particular short story. This is before he sort of matures a bit on the Tempest, so the commentary from him is just priceless, and it must have been hilarious for Warren, sitting there writing the dialogue (I’m sure he was giggling to himself!) Box is easily one of the best characters in this series, and just adds so much hilarity to scenes that you just should not be laughing at.
Overall, this is another exceptional story in the Saga, and if you love the series, you will absolutely want to read this as it adds so much to the mythology surrounding Cas and Box, as well as background of the Sargan Commonwealth.
I can’t wait for the next book on Diazal!!

A great story

I have always liked this authors stories and this one does not disappoint. Great well written characters especially the robot Box who has the best lines in the book. Intrigue and double crosses abound. Great spacegoing action from the Firefly end of the genre. A great place to start reading about these characters earlier in their relationship than the Infinity 's end books. Highly recommended.

I loved going back in time with this story!
It's a glimpse of how Cas and Box survived in Sargan space and how they got their spaceship, The Reasonable Excuse.

A prequel, to which there is also a prequel.

I was only into The Infinity’s End saga as far as Book #2 – Tempest Rising – when the Infinity’s End Legacy novellas started showing up. Maybe that was good luck for me, as “Fate’s Arrow – Robeaux” is a prequel to the series.
This was a worthy inclusion for the Infinity’s End series. It provides satisfying depth and detail to Caspian Robeaux’s role prior to the novel Caspian’s Fortune, where he did his best to work in the employ of a criminal organization while struggling to maintain his moral values. The robot – Box – pulls his own weight throughout, and has become one of my favourite characters.
(If you have had a chance to meet / read about Box, and enjoyed the experience, I recommend to you G. Gockel’s Archangel Project, now up to nine novels, and the robot 6T9, who has taken a much larger role as the series moves ahead. There is also Richard Parry’s Tyche universe, where the robot – Alphonse – became a major character in Tyche’s Ghosts.)
Meanwhile, I purchased the second of the Infinity’s End Legacy series – Fate’s Arrow: Diazal, pre-ordered Fate’s Arrow– Greene, and while checking out Warren’s current listings on Amazon, pre-ordered Fate’s Arrow– Box. Honestly, Box’s story should have been the first one.
And to help you with maintaining the Infinity’s End timeline – there is a prequel to the Fate’s Arrow – Robeaux prequel: Caspian’s Gambit – which has joined my backlog (but much anticipated) of books due to Eric Warren’s prequel-biased imagination.

One of the elements I particularly liked (see quoted text below) was how the author, Eric Warren, used Urglan’s observation to show that the Coalition embraced diversity - like Star Trek and like we humans should do!
“But as they walked, he was impressed by the size of the transitways. His own ship used every available space to the utmost efficiency. This ship seemed to revel in an excess of open space. At first, he wondered why, it wasn’t as if humans were any larger than Karkurians, but then he recalled. It wouldn’t have just been humans on this ship. The Coalition had all manner of species that served on these; the size of the corridors was probably a reflection of that.”

The plan within the plan needs warp 77 to just escape disintegration.

Great action with lying dictators and flying spaceships that only the AI robot can control…sort of when grappling hooks grab your ….

Loved the action twisting and returning back to another set of survival agreements.

Love the book. Gas and box make a great team. Box and his sarcasm are my favorite. Wish I could live a life like theirs.
