José and the Pirate Captain Toledano

Rate this book
Set in the shadows of the Spanish Inquisition, this is the coming-of-age story of José Alfaro, a young refugee who forms a powerful bond with the mysterious Pirate Captain Toledano. It’s also a dynamic pirate adventure on the high seas, with hand-to-hand combat and ship-to-ship action, and the powerful story of a dark time in history when people took different paths to survive. José Alfaro is a cocky, rambunctious teen in the 16th-century colony of Santo Domingo, pulling pranks and dodging the authorities. One day, José’s mischief lands him in serious trouble.

Hoping for a fresh start, he stows away on the Laqish , not knowing that it’s a pirate ship. From his hiding place, he watches the pirates divide their loot and plan their attacks on long days at sea. He also takes note of the respect they have for their captain, the intimidating Toledano.

But the captain has a secret―like José, he is a Jew. For him, piracy is not about the gold; it has a different purpose.

Under the tutelage of the ship’s quartermaster, José learns the intricacies of pirate life. But when he can, the captain finds ways to pull José away from the crew, to teach him about his ancestors.

José finds his community. His place. His voice. His purpose.

This is a pirate story, but also a story of survival―a story of a young man’s deep need to know who he is, where he comes from, and where he’s going.

As a lover of graphic novels, this was a real treat to read!

'Jose and the Pirate Captain Toledano,' is a story of family, faith and friendship, told in the form of beautiful color pictures. Some of the art in this graphic novel really took me by surprise with it's beauty and I felt completely transported into the world of José and Captain Toledano while reading. This is a world of secrets, a world of the open sea and fresh air, and, most importantly, a world of loyalty to oneself.

José starts out the novel as a young man who has spent his life with a cocky and carefree attitude. As the son of the treasurer of his colony of Santo Domingo, José has benefited from his father's everyday lessons, and has learned five languages as well as gained the ability to read and write-- all skills that most in his town do not possess. But José's world is rocked off it's axis when he learns that his family is Jewish and his father is soon arrested by the Spanish Inquisition.

Only barely managing to escape being arrested himself, José makes it to the bay, where he sneaks onto a pirate ship and stows away as the ship goes out to sea. After being discovered by the pirates, the boy once again narrowly escapes being killed, but this time he is saved by the Captain, a man named Toledano.

Toledano sees that José carries with him a cup with Jewish words inscribed on it, and deduces that José is Jewish. Toledano is Jewish as well and was expelled from Spain by the man that arrested José's father. The two decide to get revenge on this man, Captain De Guzman, and save José's father, hopefully before it is too late.

This is an absolute gem of a graphic novel that every history-lover should be adding to their TBR!

Jose is called names by his peers due his being very well educated. Most people, let alone teens in the 16th-century colony of Santo Domingo. Despite this, Jose lives a carefree life, that is until a shipwreck full of the Spanish Inquisition.

That is the day that his father shares a big secret with Jose. One that he kept from Jose and the entire tow, to protect his son. The secret, they are Jewish. There is no time for Jose to react! Soon after his father’s confession, the Inquisition show up and arrest Jose’s father. They try to arrest Jose as well but he narrowly escapes out the window. He has no time to think but runs towards the sea and stows away on a ship.

The ship sets sail but Jose is soon discovered. It turns out the ship is a pirate ship and they don’t take too kindly to stow aways. However, it is up to Captain Toledano to decide Jose’s fate and he decides to keep him around. Toledano is also Jewish so, when he discovers Jose’s family secret, he takes him under his wing. Jose has little interest in learning about his religion but he has lots of interest in becoming a pirate. He also hopes that he can rescue his father.

Does Jose learn the ways of pirates, can he recue his father in time? You will have to read the book yourself to find out.

This graphic novel is not only an action-packed adventure but historical fiction. It was written for children however; it is an excellent read for all ages. The writing is sharp with detail on the story and character development. The illustrations are crisp with every detail and so artfully done. The get an idea, just look at the book cover! The writing and illustrations work perfectly together, so much so, that I forgot that I was reading a graphic novel! I felt like I was on the ship and living the life of a new pirate, like Jose!

I highly recommend ‘Jose and the Pirate Captain Toledano’ and give it 5 stars.

A rollicking graphic novel set in the fictional colony of San Domingo in the year 1547, just as the icy grip of the Spanish Inquisition was overtaking Europe.

Jose is an intelligent, but cocky teenage boy whose biggest problem is the townspeople bullying him for being over-educated. That is, until a ship carrying members of the Spanish Inquisition washes up on the shores of San Domingo, and Jose's father reveals to him a secret that he had been keeping for Jose's entire life—that they are both Jewish.

Jose's father is soon arrested, and avoiding arrest himself, Jose manages to stow away on a ship called the Laqish. Quickly discovering that the Laqish is a pirate ship, Jose is soon discovered by the crew and almost thrown overboard before being saved by the captain.

Captain Toledano has reasons for saving Jose's life beyond simple mercy. See, Toledano is, himself Jewish, a fact that he has been keeping from his entire crew for fear of persecution. But, upon discovering Jose's faith, Toledano takes it upon himself to teach the boy about Judaism.

Of course, Jose bristles at the lessons and only wishes to return to San Domingo to save his father. Toledano agrees to help in the name of justice and the crew of the Laqish sets upon the colony in the middle of the night. But, of course, these things can't always go as they are planned, and Jose, Captain Toledano and the rest of the pirate crew all have a lot of obstacles to contend with before they can get the justice they desire.

I was amazed by the art throughout this graphic novel. Joshua M. Edelglass created some really beautiful full color pictures to go along with this fantastic story. This is a graphic novel that sweeps you in and leaves you wishing that it would never end!

A fast-paced action graphic novel sure to bring in even the most reluctant readers. 'Jose and the Pirate Captain Toledano,' is an awesome story filled with excellent writing and beautiful, eye-popping illustrations!

Arnon Z. Shorr's tale is one of pirates, fathers and sons, faith and loyalty to oneself above all. Like all great stories, this one starts with humble beginnings.

Jose Alfaro is a teenage boy living in the Spanish colony of San Domingo. The year is 1547 and Jose is enjoying an easy life as the son of the colony's treasurer, Señor Alfaro. Although he gets bullied for being too scholarly, Jose is happy with his life and has a crush on a local girl named Rosa. That is, until a ship washes ashore, having been plundered by pirates.

Señor Alfaro sends Jose to speak with the local Taino people to ask if they would be willing to sell San Domingo some of their land in order to house the people from the ship. While he is gone, Señor Alfaro discovers that the ship belongs to the Spanish Inquisition, and, more specifically, to the Head Inquisitor, a man named De Guzman.

This is worrying for Señor Alfaro, because he has been hiding a secret, not only from the colony but from Jose as well. See, Señor Alfaro is Jewish, as is Jose. The Señor has been hiding this fact from his son in order to protect him from the Inquisition. Because of the ship washing up on shore, Señor Alfaro must come clean to Jose about their shared religion, and he does so just in time, just before being arrested.

Jose escapes being arrested himself by jumping out of a window, and going on the run, and stowing away in a pirate ship that belongs to none other than Captain Toledano.
Perfect for graphic novel lovers and adventure lovers, alike!

What a one-of-a-kind graphic novel! It's distinctive, unique and memorable with all the right ingredients to make it popular with your patrons of all ages. The setting is as important as the characters because it takes place on the fringes of the Spanish Inquisition. The story centers around Jose, a teenage boy living in the colony of San Domingo with his devoted father who has encouraged him in intellectual pursuits. Though his father is the treasurer of the colony, he is immediately arrested when the Spanish Inquisition discovers that he and Jose are Jewish. Jose narrowly escapes arrest and makes it to a pirate ship that belongs to Captain Toledano. Toledano is a wonderful character. Inspiring because he not only rescues Jose but eventually becomes a mentor to him.

After telling Jose that he, too is Jewish, Toledano begins trying to teach the boy the ways of their shared faith. It's a wonderful adventure and the graphic quality of it is exquisite. While it presents some heavy themes, ‘Jose and the Pirate Captain Toledano,’ is entertaining and fun for all and reminds me a bit of Nathan Hale. The historical aspects of the story are educational, but the swashbuckling adventure details are nothing shy of Pirtates of the Caribbean.
This was a five-star graphic novel for me on the story alone, but the art definitely adds to the overall appeal. Joshua Edelglass creates stunning panels with "shots" that feel cinematic and draw the reader into the story to such a degree that you're sad at its conclusion.

The moment I started this graphic novel, I knew I was going to love it, and I was right! 'Jose and the Pirate Captain Toledano,' is an adventure for the ages, and a story that leaves you wishing that you could be a pirate, too.

The story follows young Jose Alfaro, a teenage boy who lives in the colony of San Domingo. Although he gets teased for being over-educated, Jose leads a happy life as the son of the community's treasurer. However, soon a cannonball is shot into the side of his easy life, as a ship washes up on shore that belongs to the Spanish Inquisition.

Sensing that his secret is going to be found out soon, Señor Alfaro reveals to Jose that they are Jewish, and that he has been hiding this since his wife's death. Only moments after the reveal, the door to their home is thrown open and Señor Alfaro is arrested.

Jose escapes through a window and makes it to the bay where he stows away on a ship. The ship, as it turns out, is owned by a pirate captain named Toledano. After he is discovered, Jose is nearly thrown overboard, but Toledano sees potential in him, and stops his crew from casting Jose out into the sea.

Soon, Toledano reveals to Jose that he is also Jewish and that he has a specific grievance with the man that arrested Señor Alfaro.

Will Jose and Toledano be able to rescue Señor Alfaro? Will they ever return to San Domingo? Of course, you have to read the graphic novel to get the answers to these questions, and I highly recommend it!

This graphic novel is a collaboration between writer Arnon Z. Shorr and illustrator Joshua M. Edelglass, and the meeting of these two creative geniuses makes for a great story accompanied by some beautiful art.

Señor Alfaro has a secret. This isn't like other secrets-- something small that might be overlooked. No, this secret is big, and, in the Spanish colony of San Domingo in the year 1547, this secret is deadly. See, Señor Alfaro is Jewish, and his faith is something that he has been hiding even from his own son.

After the death of his wife, Señor Alfaro hid his religion in order to keep from alerting the Spanish Inquisition. Unfortunately, this meant that he had to hide this knowledge from his teenage son, Jose as well, in order to keep the boy safe. In 'Jose and the Pirate Captain Toledano,' this secret gets revealed unexpectedly, and the consequences are disastrous.

When a ship full of Inquisitors washes up on shore in San Domingo, Señor Alfaro's religion is soon revealed and he is arrested. Jose narrowly escapes and stows away on a nearby pirate ship. Eventually, he is discovered, and almost thrown overboard by the crew. That is how stowaways are usually delt with. However, at the last moment, Jose is saved by the captain, a man named Toledano.

After a while of being imprisoned on the ship, Toledano frees Jose and confesses to him the reason that he saved him. Toledano is also Jewish, and he wishes to teach the ways of their people to Jose. However, Jose is more interested in learning how to be a pirate so that he may free his father and avenge their family.

Toledano agrees to return to San Domingo and help free Señor Alfaro, but as you can imagine, things do not go quite as planned and Jose and Toledano must struggle to escape the colony with their lives.

This is an excellent story with amazing illustrations. One with such emotional depth that it makes the reader feel deeply for the characters. Full of great surprises, with a terrific ending, 'Jose and the Pirate Captain Toledano,' is a reading experience that is well worth it!

A young man's fight to reclaim his heritage and a swashbuckling adventure on the high seas-- 'Jose and the Pirate Captain Toledano,' has something for readers of every age. From the thrill ride of a trip on a pirate ship to the look into a time in history that is not often discussed, this graphic novel has more action packed into every page than most full-length books, and comes with gorgeously illustrated pages to boot.

Although José starts out the novel as a normal teenage boy living in the 16th century, by the end he has gone on a journey that has not only changed his life, but the lives of those around him forever.
On the shores of José's town of Santo Domingo, a ship called the Santa Clara washes up, after having been attacked by pirates. This is the ship of an Inquisitor in the Spanish Inquisition, a man named Captain De Guzman. De Guzman soon discovers that José and his father are Jewish, (a fact that even José himself did not know until that day) and arrests José's father.

José manages to escape and boards a pirate ship where he is soon taken under the wing of the Captain. Captain Toledano is Jewish as well, but he has hidden his faith from his crew as he fears that he will not be accepted by them.

Toledano begins to school José in the ways of their people but soon the other members of the crew grow suspicious of the time that the two are spending together. Soon, the pirates return to Santo Domingo in order to stop De Guzman but when they are caught by the enemy, it takes José himself to intervene.

This is a one-of-a-kind story with just the right amount of heart and gumption. Five out of five stars for this beautifully written and illustrated graphic novel!

When I was a wee thing myself I LOVED anything pirates so I know this would've been perfect for me so I knew I had to check this out. That cover...the storyline...the title....perfection!

Here we follow José Alfaro who is a young refugee. After certain events, he finds himself on a pirate ship and forms a powerful bond with the mysterious Pirate Captain Toledano. Set during the Spanish Inquisition, José and the captain have a secret that is dangerous for themselves and their crew.

I finished this in one sitting. I literally couldn't stop reading! I had to know what was going to happen to our hero, his family, his friends, and his crew. No one is safe during the Spanish Inquisition! Such a dangerous and dark time.

It made me sad watching José be forced to grow up so quickly. He went from a standard rambunctious and carefree teen to a young adult with a dangerous secret and worry and sadness. But he never lost his spirit!

I loved watching him and Captain Toledano form a friendship. It was nice seeing the captain take José under his wing.

By the end, I found that I enjoyed it, but it also saddened me. Some people are just so evil. Humans can really stink, but I loved the ending message here. There is hope for humanity, but it is a rough road.

I loved, loved, LOVED the art. It was perfect for this story. It was a perfect balance of realistic vs animated. I think kids will really like it.

The only thing I consider an "issue" is that I felt like we needed more. I would've loved to see/read more of José's lessons with Captain Toledano. Learn more about the history of the Jewish people and the religion. Maybe see more about what it takes to be a pirate like fighting, etc. Maybe an extra couple of pages? I think that would've been an extra cherry on top.

In the end, I really enjoyed reading this. Can this please be made into a TV show or a movie??? I would for sure watch that! The story, the characters, the message...bravo. If you like historical fiction you'll enjoy this. I think this would be a good story for kids...especially if they like pirates. It has a great message at the end. Overall, I shall stamp this with 4 stars.

As part of a Premiere Virtual Author Book Tour, I received a copy of this book from the publisher.

This beautifully illustrated graphic novel deserves five stars for the artwork alone. Illustrator Joshua Edelglass has brought to live the story settings with every stroke of his brush/pencil. Additionally, he has brought to life the characters created by Author Arnon Z Shorr’s words and story.

We first meet the young man, Jose Alfaro, as he eludes the clutches of a nasty merchant who has had enough of the boy’s pranks. Fleeing through the marketplace of Santo Domingo in the year 1547, Jose returns home where he speaks with his father. Jose tells him that he’s tired of being different and doesn’t want any more lessons. What need does he have for speaking five languages anyway? But his father imparts a secret that Jose wishes he hadn’t learned. That he was born in Spain, not Santo Domingo as he’d been led to believe. And his heritage is Jewish. When the Grand Inquisitor arrives at their house and arrests his father, Jose runs off and stows away on a the ship Laqish – a pirate ship captained by the fierce Toledano. Jose soon learns that the captain has a secret of his own. He too is Jewish but his crew must never know. Toledano is on the trail of Captain de Guzeman, the Inquisitor, who hung his own father. Jose and Toledano join forces with the quartermaster teaching Jose how to become a pirate and Toledano himself instructing the boy about his heritage.

Full of action and adventure on the high seas, this graphic novel is a coming of age story of the highest caliber. Easy to read and follow, the story is set out in vivid depictions of the events. At 96 pages (print edition), it will make for great reading at the suggested ages of 8-12 but I also feel it will resonate with the 12-16 year old crowd as well. Adults will delight in the artwork as well as the subject matter. Life in the 1500s was hard but some of the same situations (prejudice and attacks on various religions) are still with us today. This would be a wonderful book for adults to read with their child and discuss the various topics set forth.

“On Sundays, I went to church like everyone else. But late at night, I prayed to our God and studied our holy books. I kept a careful calendar so I would not miss our holidays. And on Friday nights, I lit the candles, and recited the blessing over wine.” – 'Jose and the Pirate Captain Toledano,' by Arnon Z. Shorr, Illustrated by Joshua Edelglass’

A story about the perseverance of faith and loyalty in an unjust world, 'Jose and the Pirate Captain Toledano,' is a graphic novel for all ages, and one that everyone should read.

In 1547, much of the world was being crushed in the cold grip of the Spanish Inquisition. This graphic novel is set in one such part of the world, San Domingo, a fictional colony in the new world, where a young man named Jose Alfaro resides.

Jose is a wildly intelligent, if a little over-confident young man who has, up until the start of the story, led a pretty easy life. Despite losing his mother at a young age, Jose has had the benefits of an extensive education from his father, the treasurer of the colony.

Of course, this all goes away when a ship bearing several high up members of the Spanish Inquisition washes ashore, having been attacked by pirates. Jose's father, Señor Alfaro, reveals to him that they are Jewish and that he has hidden this fact for Jose's entire life.

Terrified that he is going to be arrested, Señor Alfaro tries to entreat Jose to listen so that he can be prepared to evade arrest, but just as he is going to do so their door is kicked in and Señor Alfaro is arrested by the Inquisition.

Jose escapes, but only barely and winds up climbing aboard a pirate ship where he must rely on the captain, the aforementioned Captain Toledano, in order to survive and hopefully return to San Domingo and recue his father.

A compelling story with a lot of heart, expertly written and illustrated! 'Jose and the Pirate Captain Toledano,' is just the story for you if you love historical fiction!

“We are sailing towards danger, so sharpen your blades and swallow your pride.” – Captain Toledano.

A rip-roaring adventure on the high seas! 'Jose and the Pirate Captain Toledano,' by Arnon Z. Shorr and illustrated by Joshua M. Edelglass is exactly the kind of graphic novel that sucks you in and whisks you away until the very last page! Shorr and Edelglass have created a wonderful story with beautiful visuals that ensnare the reader and make you feel as if you are experiencing everything with the characters.

This is a story about justice, loyalty and family relationships and each beat is perfectly done. The main character of the story, a young man named Jose Alfaro. He begins the story as a carefree teenager whose biggest problem is being bullied by his peers for his intelligence.

Soon enough, however, Jose's word is turned upside down when his father reveals to him that his late mother was Jewish. Jose's father, Señor Alfaro kept this knowledge from his son in order to protect him from the Spanish Inquisition which has taken over their colony of San Domingo.
However, Señor Alfaro is soon arrested by the head Inquisitor, a man named De Guzman. Jose escapes being arrested himself and goes to the harbor, stowing away on a pirate ship called the Laqish. When he is found, Jose is nearly thrown overboard into the ocean. But the captain, Toledano, decides to take Jose under his wing.

This is a move that is questioned by both Jose and the crew of the ship. But soon it is revealed that Toledano is a Jewish man, himself, and he wishes to teach Jose the ways of their religion. Jose spends many months on the ship, but soon they discover that they are able to return to San Domingo and possibly rescue Señor Alfaro. But, of course, things do not go as planned, and the crew of the Laqish must figure out how to get justice for Jose, and discover some things about themselves along the way. This is an epic read!

Nothing in this world beats a good pirate book, they seem to have it all; voyages in the sea, boxes of treasures and some exhilarating adventure, etc So, it comes as no surprise that everyone loves a good pirate story not only are they dominant on our screens but they have been a major part of the world of books over the centuries. One such author who brings all this to justice is Arnon Z Shorr in his latest masterpiece christened José and the Pirate Captain Toledano.
This great action-adventure novel which. is set in the shadows of the Spanish inquisition revolves around an overweening teen, Jose Alfaro whose father is arrested based on being a Jew which, forces the young man to escape as a stow away on a pirate's ship.
While at it the young man forms an outstanding bond with a pirate known as Captain Toledano who Jose later learns that he is also Jewish. It is during this time that the young and ambitious Jose gets to know all the pirate's ropes which, include how they divide their loot and also how they plan their attacks on wealthy ships while under the tutelage of the vicious but fatherly captain.
It is during this stint that Jose finds his voice, purpose, and community. However, Jose is still on a mission to save his father who has been imprisoned. Can he continue with the mission? What is the price and is the young man willing to pay for it?
Shorr does a marvelous job with this masterpiece. This book is filled with swashbuckling adventure, intrigue, and passion. The author does a marvelous job of immersing the reader within the setting and the illustrator, Joshua Edelglass’ brings it all to life. So, for an avid reader interested on a treasure hunt for some great books about pirates, Shorr and Edelglass’ has you covered. A five-star for this marvelous piece.

This graphic novel has everything going for it! The artwork, the characters, the story—everything combines to make a truly masterful tale that brings the reader in and doesn't let go even after you've finished reading it!

'Jose and the Pirate Captain Toledano,' by Arnon Z. Shorr (and illustrated by Joshua M. Edelglass) is a wonderful commentary on the relationship between fathers and sons and being true to oneself.
Jose goes on quite a journey throughout the story, one that begins in the colony of San Domingo and ends somewhere he never could have expected. Along the way, Jose makes new friends, including the pirate captain, Toledano and his crew of swashbucklers aboard their ship, the Laqish.
At the beginning of the story, Jose is a normal teenage boy—the son of the colony's treasurer. But soon he discovers that he and his father are Jewish, and his father is arrested by the Spanish Inquisition.

Jose must take refuge on the Laqish by stowing away. Soon, however, he is discovered, and almost thrown overboard before he is saved by Captain Toledano. Toledano reveals to Jose that he, too, is Jewish and he begins trying to teach Josh the ways of their people, despite the boy's lack of focus. Jose would much rather learn to be a pirate, as he is intent on returning to San Domingo to free his father and take revenge on the Inquisition.

Despite initially being reluctant to help, Captain Toledano eventually agrees to help Jose, as he has a personal grudge against the man that arrested Jose's father.

This story is full of adventures as well as fascinating historical information, both of which make for a great narrative that doesn't get bogged down and brings everything together really beautifully in the end. If you're a fan of pirates, or just a fan of graphic novels, you'll definitely want to check this one out!

San Domingo, 1547. A teenage boy runs through the streets, trying to escape after stealing his rightful wages from his employer. When he returns home, the boy, Jose, gets scolded by his father, but they are soon interrupted by an announcement that a ship has washed up on shore.

Jose's father, Señor Alfaro, is immediately concerned. The Alfaro's are Jewish, although Jose is not aware of this fact, and the Señor has been hiding his faith from the entire colony for Jose's entire life.

San Domingo is deep in the clutches of the Spanish Inquisition, and the ship that washed up on shore is full of Inquisitors. Knowing that he may not have much time before they are discovered, Señor Alfaro confesses everything to his son. Soon he is arrested and Jose only barely escapes being taken in, as well.

Ending up on a pirate ship, Jose is introduced to a pirate by the name of Captain Toledano, and taken under the man's wing. Toledano is Jewish as well, and he vows to teach Jose everything he can about their faith before they must return to San Domingo and attempt to take revenge on the man that arrested Señor Alfaro.

This graphic novel is filled with stunning art and writing that whisks you into the story and takes your breath away. Between the historical aspect and the gorgeous, full color drawings, 'Jose and the Pirate Captain Toledano,' is a truly magical reading experience from start to finish.

Don't hesitate to pick up this wonderful graphic novel, I promise that it is one you won't soon forget! The twists and turns in this story were enough that I couldn't put it down, and I ended up reading it all in one sitting. A fantastic tale and an epic ending are awaiting you if you add this to your TBR!

José and the Pirate Captain Toledano by Arnon Z. Shorr (illustrated by Joshua M. Edelglass) is a graphic novel telling of a teen joining the crew of a Jewish pirate. Mr. Shorr is an author, director, as well as a screenwriter.

The life of José Alfaro, a teen in Santo Domingo during the 16th Century, is about to turn upside-down. When the Spanish inquisition comes to town, José discovers he and his family are Jewish, and, of course, has to escape.

Boarding the pirate ship Laqish, José learns the way of the pirates. Along the way he realizes that the fearsome Captain Toledano is also Jewish.

The first I heard that there were famous Jewish pirates, was when I picked up Jewish Pirates of the Caribbean, a solid history book. José and the Pirate Captain Toledano by Arnon Z. Shorr fictionalize this history, to tell a tale of adventure without reservation.

This is certainly a fascinating book, telling part of Jewish history which has been ignored for decades, maybe even centuries. The graphic novel would be interesting for kids and adults too. It is obviously catering to the younger crowd; however, it does not talk down to the reader.

The author explicitly tackles several important topics in this graphic novel, some overtly, others in between the panels. Religion, anti-Semitism, coming of age, discovery, love, as well as family, and loyalty, are some of them.

The artwork by Joshua M. Edelglass is very good, dynamic, and entertaining. The panels move the story along and are detailed, as well as colorful.

José and the Pirate Captain Toledano is an enjoyable story, with some bit of history, and generally plenty of fun. A book which is both entertaining and with a purpose.

What is this life secret that your parents kept away from you until you were of age enough to take it in? You may never have had one, but it hits different when you come to a new revelation that you are not what you thought you were.
Jose gets torn between an ensuing identity crisis after his father reveals they were indeed Jewish, something he had never imagined in his whole life. Remember, this was during the Spanish Inquisition of the 16th century. Things get messy when Captain De Guzman hunting for heresy, washes ashore at the colony of Santo Domingo, Señor Alfaro, Jose’s father’s newfound home.
As Jose gets to terms with the new revelation, his life changes. What ensures is a heart-rending story of a teenager struggling with self-identity, love, and now a newfound course fighting for justice.
In the end, Captain De Guzman sinks!
I find this graphic story quite fascinating; everything from the artwork to illustration and word choice resonates. It is a fantastic story with high seas adventure and pirates, that your child and yourself will enjoy.

What do you get when you cross a swashbuckling pirate adventure with an educational historical narrative? You get 'José and the Pirate Captain Toledano,' a graphic novel with a lot of action, a lot of heart, and an interesting look at the distant past.
1547, Santo Domingo, a colony held in the grips of the Spanish Inquisition, where all Jewish people have been expelled—or so everyone thinks.
A young man named José rushes through the streets, avoiding capture by his former boss, having taken what he felt was his rightful wages for working. José just manages to make it home without being captured only to find his father in a foul mood.
It turns out that José is late for his lessons, however, he doesn't see this as much of an issue, as he is already being picked on by the other young people for being too clever. José knows five languages and can read and write-- all things that were shunned in that time period for making someone too worldly. But José's cocky attitude and seemingly easy life are about to be torn to shreds, as someone soon arrives at the door to tell his father that a ship has washed up on shore.
The ship belongs to Captain De Guzman and the Spanish Inquisition, who decide to stay in San Domingo on what the Captain feels is a calling from God. This is bad news for Señor Alfaro, José's father, who has been hiding the fact that he is Jewish, not only from the rest of the colony, but from José as well. Soon, the father and son's secret is discovered and José just manages to escape capture and stowaway on a pirate ship.
There he meets Captain Tolenado, who he discovers is also hiding his Jewish faith, and the two hatch a plan for revenge against Captain De Guzman.
This graphic novel is a wild ride from start to finish, and one that I recommend to anyone who loves historical fiction! You won't regret picking this one up!

'Jose and the Pirate Captain Toledano,' combines exciting adventures on the high seas with vivid historical detail to provide a reading experience that is both fun and educational in equal turns.
This graphic novel contains not only a brilliantly written story, but stunning full color illustrations that bring the reader fully into the story of José Alfaro, a teenage boy living in 16th century Santo Domingo, a colony in the grips of the Spanish Inquisition.

Despite losing his mother as a baby, José's life has been mostly carefree as the son of the treasurer of the colony, but this all changes one day when a ship called the Santa Clara washes up on the shore. The ship is revealed to belong to the son of the Grand Inquisitor, a man named Captain De Guzman.

José's father soon reveals to him that their family is Jewish and he is almost immediately arrested by Captain De Guzman. José narrowly avoids being taken in himself, but is able to flee to the shore and stowaway on a pirate ship.

It is there that he meets Captain Toledano, who rescues him from being thrown overboard. Toledano, who is himself Jewish, becomes a mentor to José, as the two strive to take revenge on Captain De Guzman, rescue Señor Alfaro, and return to Santo Domingo. Of course, things don't always go as planned, and José and the Captain face a lot of difficulties on their road to justice.
Readers of all ages can enjoy this graphic novel, both for the exciting story and the lessons about friendship, loyalty, and being true to oneself. José is a strong, clever character who learns many important lessons over the course of the graphic novel. This is a 5 star book in a beautifully illustrated package and quite an enjoyable adventure all around!

I loved this graphic novel! I would have loved to use it with my middle school students. It really helps understand the nuances of how the Inquisition affected all aspects of the lives of the Jewish communities of the times. It so beautifully expresses the yearnings of those “ hidden Jews” to be able to demonstrate their faith. The art work truly shows the raw emotions of the characters.

I really enjoyed reading José and the Pirate Captain Toledano. I thought this graphic novel was a fun read. It is full of action, adventure, and lessons that all could learn from. I loved it.

I loved the illustrations in José and the Pirate Captain Toledano by the talented artist, Joshua M Edelglass. The vivid colors of the pictures perfectly go with the story and really made the tale flow. They are a great way to keep a readers attention as to what was going on.

I am giving José and the Pirate Captain Toledano five stars. Readers that are between the ages of eight and twelve and enjoy reading graphic novels full of action. I look forward to sharing this book with my own children. I know they will love it.

I received a paperback copy of José and the Pirate Captain Toledano from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

This graphic novel really packed a lot of story into its pages, creating characters that I wished I could read more about. You really empathize with Jose and his family, but also with all the marginalized people suffering at the bloody hands of the Inquisition. There was so much life in these pages and the beautiful illustrations drew me more deeply into the story. I wanted to linger over each page to fully appreciate the gorgeous artwork. This has action, adventure, history, romance and human drama. Each character could've easily been a story all on their own. I'm not sure if more tales are planned, but I sure hope so. I thoroughly enjoyed this rousing high seas adventure and will most likely read it many more times. Excellently done.

***I received a copy of this book from the publisher. My review is strictly voluntary.***

1547 Santa Domingo - Jose's father tells him they are Jewish, and they left Portugal when Jose was a baby because of the inquisition. Now, an Inquisitor has come to the island. Jose flees, with his dad's kiddish cup, and stows away on a pirate ship. The pirate Toledano is also a secret Jew and gives lessons to Jose. Toledano has been chasing the Inquisitor for years to avenge his family's murder. This graphic novel has lots of adeventure that will appeal to kids, and tells a story that most people don't know about.

This book blew me away. I picked it up on a friend’s recommendation, but with some skepticism. It’s a credit to Schorr and Edelglass’s skills that I was drawn in so deeply so quickly. Set in the Caribbean, this book explores what it means to be different and searching for your place in the world. They have crafted a thoroughly human story, a tale of resisting the Inquisition and prejudice that felt both realistic about the world’s darkness and deeply, deeply heartwarming.

I wasn’t a fan of the art, but the story is fast paced and engaging and beautiful.
