Paleontologist Dr. Secora James is still reeling from injuries sustained in the previous summer’s mountain top battle and the adoption of Monta, an Andean orphan. Her best friend, Gideon Yellow Thunder, has something important to discuss. Still, before she can listen, Secora receives a desperate call from a fellow paleontologist, Billy Riggins, under attack at a mammoth site in Western Washington.
Secora travels from Montana with Monta to find out if Billy is dead. Will her growing knowledge of his taboo discovery and the accumulation of indisputable proof also threaten her life and that of her tiny daughter? Where is the skeleton?
Gideon, shaken by the realization Secora will always be rushing away from him, leaves town to help a client solve a mystery in remote Western Montana. There he meets Kamal, the owner’s son, and caretaker Jake Lansing. The three men are attacked by a dead-eyed assassin who wounds Kamal, then seals them inside a cold, wet mine.
Jimmy Lizardeye, a Lakota Wichasha Wakan and Gideon’s close friend and mentor, asks Secora to meet him near West Glacier. Jimmy is worried; he is unable to reach Gideon by phone or in spirit. If he and Secora can track the victims down, will any of them survive the cave-in and hypothermia?
A few days later, Secora hears from the university’s Anthropology department; her sister, Iris, and good friend Jane have disappeared with their team of students into the Peruvian Yungas. She must leave for South America with Jimmy and a university-sponsored team, including two treacherous companions. What about little Monta?
Secora’s parents are away traveling, teaching, the babysitter, can’t handle an extra child for an entire week, and she can’t leave the baby with a stranger. They must embark on another dangerous journey together. Can Secora survive? Will her baby be safe? Her circle of family and friends is critically important to her, yet they’ve all seemingly disappeared in a matter of days.
Will she survive personal tests, assassins, and terror birds? Can she manage the loss of those closest to her?
Thrilling events cause bonds to strengthen throughout her spiritually and culturally diverse extended family.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! It was a bit of a slow start, but I think if you read book 1 first (which I didn't) it will certainly help in setting the stage and characters. If you love paleontology, history and adventure, then this is the book for you. As you follow Paleontologist Dr. Secora James (her adoptive infant daughter Monta), her friends Gideon and Jimmy into the Peruvian Yungas to search for her sister, Iris, and good friend Jane have and their team of students from Anthropology department. Intertwined all is a discovery made by Billy Riggins a fellow paleontologist who discovered a mammoth, and .... Thank you to NetGalley and Diane Olsen for a copy of this book for my honest opinion.
Book 2 in the series is a page-turner from page one. Author Olsen takes us on a continuing journey with Dr. Secora James. This is a stand-alone book, but there are references to book 1. I recommend reading book 1 first, then delve into this following journey. Secora once again finds herself in the midst of a mystery in more ways than one. One aspect of this author's work that is so admirable is her research work. It shines through in her storylines. Not only are her novels excellent, but the reader comes away with a bit of knowledge in Diane's field of expertise. I would give more than 5 stars if they were available. Settle in for an intriguing read.
This is really good. I haven't read Book 1 but still managed fine. I love Peru, archeology and history, mystery and adventure so this could have been made for me. So enjoyable :)
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The book is a journey itself. I was hooked from the beginning. I liked the story, the characters, and the writing style. I will check the other books by the author (this is the first time I've read this author). I recommend it.
I was thrilled while reading book one, "The Thunder Beings" of The RIsing Wind Series by Diane Olsen! Book two, "Ice and Bone," even has even more action-packed thrills!
Book two opens as Gideon and Secora are back with more action, trials, and another thrilling ride but worldwide. On the serious side of this amazing cross-genre fiction written like only this Author, Diane Olsen, can, woven throughout book one and now book two of Rising Wind "Ice and Bone" is the very essence of HOPE with a touch of Indiana Jones but better!
Even as the suspense and action build, you actually 'feel' like your traveling along with the characters across the world! Even the remote places, while chills are running up your spine as this explosive story unfolds, there still is that beautiful light Christian-themed feelings of hope.
I and all readers will take away when reading this beautiful series is, even if a person is a spiritual believer or not, no matter where you were born or what part of the world you live in, Diane uniquely shares HOPE throughout this fictional mystery adventure series that spans multi-cultural boundaries and proves God's love and mercy are accessible to all humankind.
Exceptionally written and woven in, God's spiritually accomplishes "Hope" as feelings through all our hearts and souls collectively to bring us together. I highly suggest everyone read this book and series. It is one of a kind.
