**Please note**The latest MARVEL ENCYCOPEDIA NEW EDITION 2024 is not in the database. This review is a review of the latest and the greatest!!! ****************************************************************************** Talk about the mother of all MARVEL ENCYCLOPEDIAS. This one clocks in at at over 510 pages, and has over 1,200 entries. It is a must-have for any comic fan who has ever read a Marvel Comic. DK once again has created a visual masterpiece, one that is more than reasonably priced. As one who was part of the Marvel universe of the 1960’s and had to buy every comic, every issue, this is the ultimate trip down memory lane. And how the comic world has changed thanks to Marvel. When I was buying comics, I think there were something like ten titles each month. Saving up all my hard-earned money, I proudly owned them all. Back then the list of villains and characters was likely more in the 100 range. Back taking a look at this, I can definitely see the creative minds that were on control at Marvel certainly took the company to new heights with more heroes and villains than you shake Captain America’s shield at. It is the thoroughness of the book that really boggles the mind, and makes it worth the price of admission. Not only are all the characters named, of course with illustrations, but there is so much more. It lists their real names, base of operations, height, weight, eye color, hair color, occupation, first appearance, and gives a history of their significant appearances and how they factored into either being part of the good guys of nefarious bad guys. It is done with such depth you almost feel like you know them personally, the writers sparing nothing in bringing up to date from the earliest appearances to more modern day sightings. This is definitely a book that will have you in awe and referring to often. If you have comic loving siblings or friends, you might want to put it under lock and key because there is the chance that someone will want to borrow it and possibly never return it. I don’t think there are enough superlatives to actually describe this book, but let us just say if you ever only decide to purchase one book dedicated to superheroes, make it this one. It almost belongs in the Smithsonian.
I've been a bit naff at updating my progress on this (it doesn't really have chapters so that doesn't make it very easy) but even though it's a couple of years (and who knows how many stories) out of date I still enjoyed it. Hell, there was quite a lot in it even I wasn't familiar with and my friends like to call me a walking Marvel encyclopedia.
I love how well organized this book is!! Me and my brother learned so much new stuff about new characters and new facts about some of our fave heros as well. Love the art as well. Can't wait to read the new book as well.
Got the first edition of this when I was a young kid and was completely obsessed by it, so I’m biased. Interesting to read through and learn about 900 different superheroes and villains I’ve never heard of. But honestly everything can be found online. Unless you like having it on your shelf, it’s not really worth it.
