Big Island Middle School

Rate this book
Principal Patel is a serious woman with a serious goal - to run the best middle school in the universe, or at least on earth. She builds her school on an island, and anyone who is late will miss the school boat and be forced to swim to school. Somehow, only the wackiest people join the school! Nora can’t stop telling outrageous lies. Archie watches television in his head. Sage loves to create art that grosses out her classmates. This is a light-hearted short story collection about a very silly middle school.

This book is incredibly unusual and highly inventive! Ketki Palande has a wonderful imagination and brings us to a school with terrible leadership, bizarre teachers, and unique students. Overall a very enjoyable read that made me chuckle several times.

When the author sent me a review request for this book, my first thought was "Sideways Stories from Wayside School." And as someone who adored that book series as a kid, I was happy to do a review for it. Lo and behold, that series was the inspiration.

It's definitely got the same wacky, "reality but three steps to the left" feeling as Wayside School. There's an aura about it that could almost be called magical realism, in the way that all the strange things just happen and everyone goes with it. But it's definitely more of a comedic take.

The book states up front that there aren't really supposed to be any moral tales in the stories, and even tells young readers to not accept the actions of the adults as the right thing to do. But you can still find little themes if you're the kind of reader that wants them in a story.

I also appreciated the multi-media aspect, with fake social media posts and paperwork between (and sometimes in the middle of) the stories. It added an odd layer of realism to a highly unrealistic story.

All in all, if you were a fan of Sideways stories as a kid, this is a quick and fun walk down memory lane. And who knows, maybe it'll inspire a love for weird stories for the children in your life.
