Allayne Adair is an idealistic young Special Agent of the United States Customs Service in 1980s Los Angeles. As much as she loves her challenging career, things only get better when she falls for a fellow agent, Gabriel McDermott. After months of an intensely passionate relationship, indications emerge that Gabriel might have secrets to hide. When he abruptly cuts off all contact with her, Allayne is devastated, but concludes that Gabriel was simply a player and she’d been well played.
The mystery deepens when Allayne learns that Gabriel's secrets involved his association with the Irish Republican Army. When a devastating tragedy occurs, Allayne must decide whether she's willing to risk her job, and possibly her life, to secure justice for Gabriel, the man who broke her heart. The decision will challenge her character, her investigative ability and her view of the world.
Written by a retired Special Agent who worked in Los Angeles, this meticulously plotted mystery is part police procedural and part love story and paints a vivid picture of life as a federal agent during the 1980s.
A young female Customs agent in the 1980's meets the newest agent from Boston, and of course, falls in love. Also, of course, he's involved with the IRA. And so forth...
This book was too slow of a burn in my opinion. It was very hard for me to become hooked to the story. Did not exactly feel the intensity I anticipated when I initially read the description.
When I started A Different Sea, I was unsure what to make of it. The book read like a police procedural television show, following an agent working for the “U.S. Customs Service Office of the Special Agent in Charge” in 1980s Los Angeles. The chapters were very short and almost like journal entries for a particular day. There were a lot of acronyms and descriptions of procedure.
The main character is Allayne Adair, a new female special agent who is still learning the ropes and is assigned a new partner Gabriel who she begins a romantic relationship with. The cases they were working and their romance was only mildly interesting to me. I felt like Allie’s internal dialogue and behavior were more like a man than a woman.
The second half of the book became a lot more interesting as Gabriel starts becoming a suspicious character. I enjoyed learning the history of Ireland and the IRA. The mystery was compelling with a surprising ending. The historical details of the 1980s and life in California were done well. For a special agent, I thought Allayne was a little slow in suspecting Gabriel and I thought Gabriel was not a very good agent to protect himself.
