So you want to fight crime? Save people from villains? Be the good guy? If the answer is yes to all these questions, then the life of a Sidekick just might be for you. Warning: Not responsible for potential death or dismemberment.
Davis might come to regret the day he decided to become a Sidekick, but now that he has already put in the time to complete the certification program, he was going to see it through. But first, he needs to survive in the wilds for a couple of weeks with his fellow wannabe sidekicks. Nothing like teen angst and drama to make a man feel his years.
If he succeeds and makes it as a sidekick, he gets to look forward to working with the cantankerous Hammer Jack, a hero of some repute. Though whether that is good or bad is yet to be determined. The time has come for Davis to embrace his new life and take his place on Planet Hero as a lowly sidekick.

Greetings and salutations! I am M.A. Carlson, author of three series, all available now. Check where my writing journey began with World Tree Online: The Curse of Hurlig Ridge, The Duchess of Hammers, The Mountain Valley War, The Endless Savanna, the Order of Epic Grinders. My second series is Planet Hero: Civilian and Sidekick. And I just released my newest novel and third series, The Devil's Game: Purgatory. I hope you enjoy the adventure and the fantastic journey that is the World Tree Online, Planet Hero, and The Devil's Game.
More about me, I love writing. I love being entertained by a good story. I wrote my first original novel a few years ago now and I can't see myself stopping writing any time soon, it's what I plan to do for the rest of my life. I am very happy to be able to share what I hope others will find as much fun to read I did to write.
A solid continuation of story from the first book.
I wasn't a fan of the dual story lines. One followed Davis/Doc on Planet Hero, the protagonist from the first book, where as the second followed a new character on Earth, John. In general, I think multiple story lines are a good way of giving multiple perspectives to the same story. But these story lines felt like they should have been in two separate books. The John story line felt like a spin off. If not in a spin off, I think it should have been included in the first book. That way two characters could have been discovering how to use the same power system even if they were on two totally separate earths.
The stories are only connected by the fact they're in the same multiverse and characters use the same power system. Well except the fact that . The book ends shortly after so I'm not counting this.
The story felt way too short. Maybe just because of the dual story lines. But I was hoping to see new and interesting powers. Especially from Davis. Power wise he didn't really change throughout the book and used the same powers in the exact same way as last book. There was some good world building for Planet Hero though. Some good background on how heros train and the politics that go into heroing.
The ending was interesting... and odd. . I honestly don't know what to make of it.
In the end, I enjoyed this book and I plan to read the next book.
This review is for the audiobook version of the story.
Since finishing MA Carlson’s fabulous first novel in this series, ‘Planet Hero: Civilian’, I’ve been on pins and needles waiting for Book 2. And, boy, does Carlson deliver a story with as much imagination and originality as Book 1. I love how seamlessly Carlson creates a universe that seems custom made for me. The emphasis is more on sci-fi than fantasy, and SUPERHEROES! It doesn’t get any better than that for me.
Readers are introduced to many new and fascinating characters while Davis (aka The Physician) is training as a sidekick. Characters from the previous book also make appearances, most prominently Hammer Jack. They all work together to overcome the life-threatening challenge of the book, along with some surprising villains.
In addition to saving lives, and killing and cultivating beasts, Davis is methodically working to understand how the bio-nano converters work, despite knowing it’s illegal to do so. I’m just as curious as Davis to find out the mechanics of this conversion process.
And, while all that’s happening on Planet Hero, a significant portion of this book is spent detailing what’s occuring back on Earth. Just like the mysterious nano-converter mystery, I’m anxious to see where Carlson takes this plot development, and where it will intersect with the events on Planet Hero. I really hope the wait for Book 3 isn’t long!
Jeffrey Kafer is the perfect choice to narrate this series. He is a top-notch voice actor, lending just the right amount of sarcasm to Davis’ character. He has a superlative ability to give the numerous characters in this series distinct voices. He’s the best of the best, in my opinion.
I was given a free review copy of this audiobook, at my request, and have now written a voluntary opinion of it.
The swapping viewpoints was interesting and the timing of them was well done. The “Sidekick School” arc took me off guard for a minute because how different our MC seemed with the rest of the groups compared to the previous book. Made sense later but it took me a minute. It felt a little too short but that was probably because of how quickly one thing after another came up. Overall fun throughout and enjoyable. Can’t wait till the next one comes out.
So Doc completes Sidekick training and the question of what happened to Earth starts getting answered. Villains want to take out Doc and it’s because of his past actions. He manages a miracle and it comes at a mysterious price. Then the stops slams to a stop and you scream at the author for stopping. Enjoy.
Great take on the LitRPG system, with nanites being the reason everyone gets a status screen. Looking forward to seeing how The Dr evolves Ana’s how things go back on earth.
I'm a big fan of Superhero stories and this one is one of my new favorites. The advancement system makes sense and the main character is consistently good. He's also perfectly snarky.
The book took up where the last one left off. The characters are full and life like and the stranded in a strange land is still learning. I am eagerly awaiting book 3, 4, & 5. To come out!
