Is the Voice in My Head God or Just Me?: An 8-Lesson Bible Study on Hearing the Voice of God

Do the voices in your head have you spinning in circles? Do you want to do the right thing, but aren’t sure what that is? How do you know God’s will for your life when your choices are not between “good and evil” but between “good and good”? How do you know if the voice in your head is God…or just you?

Be encouraged! God is not playing games or trying to keep you in the dark. He wants you to know Him and to know His will. God speaks, and you will know when He does.

In this 8-lesson in-depth study of God’s Word, you will consult and apply hundreds of Bible passages related to hearing God’s voice so you can…

•See the different—and sometimes shocking—ways God spoke to His people throughout Scripture.
•Study the lives of Bible heroes like Noah, Moses, Elijah, David, and Daniel to discover why they heard God clearly and often (and so can you!).
• Uncover The 5 Keys to Becoming a Good Listener.
•Discern the distinct characteristics of God’s voice so you can easily recognize every “counterfeit.”
•Learn to recognize the voice of the flesh and the voice of Satan so you can effectively silence each one.
•Understand why God is sometimes silent—and how His silence doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong.

Includes questions for reflection, application, and discussion.Perfect for personal or group study.

I loved so many things about this study.

Authentic and personal style with a careful and reverent handling of Scripture (no twisting or shaping it to fit the author's agenda).

The summary sections and the space for writing my biggest takeaway at the end of each chapter made for not only a wonderful study experience, but a useful reference manual I can quickly review (so handy for someone who has trouble retaining information).

One of the most valuable tools was the focus in lesson two on God's communication goals and methods as gleaned from Biblical examples of God speaking to people in Scripture (like Noah, Moses, Mary, Paul, etc.). Whenever I'm having trouble discerning whether the voice in my head is God or just me, I can easily go to the eight filters Sandy Cooper lists and see how the intentions of that voice holds up.

I'll admit it will probably always make me a little nervous when someone starts a sentence with, "God told me...," but this study has sharpened my ability to test the thoughts behind such statements and has also grown my confidence that His sheep really do know His voice. It's so helpful to learn practical ways to filter out the voices that compete with God's (including my own fears and desires) and first and foremost rely on what He speaks in His word (which, as the author emphasized, is the way God most often communicates with His people today).

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to other Christians, whether new to the faith or seasoned. Or even people who are just curious about Christianity and it's ideas about how God communicates today.
