An exceptional set of stories. In all seriousness I’d compare the best of this lot with Maupassant. Certainly gives a gloriously real picture of the North in the fifties and sixties. Which gives one good reason for reading them. The main reason is that they are superbly crafted and very readable. I enjoyed this book very much.
