About the author

Byron Preiss was the president of Byron Preiss Visual Publications and Ibooks, and was recognized as a pioneer in digital publishing. He was among the first publishers to release CD-ROM's and electronic books.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Preiss graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1972 and earned a master's degree in communications from Stanford University. He produced The Words of Gandhi, an audio book that won a Grammy Award in 1985. He was also the co-author of Dragonworld, a novel he co-wrote with J. Michael Reaves that was published by Bantam Books in 1979.

A proponent of illustrated books, as well as comics and graphic novels, Preiss also published works by celebrity authors including Jane Goodall, Billy Crystal, Jerry Seinfeld, LeAnn Rimes and Jay Leno.

I inherited this copy of the US Constitution from my grandmother, who bought or received it new in 1987, the year of the Constitution's bicentennial. It's interesting to think of her reading it then and many others reading it over the the last 235 years, and how--political interpretations aside--it is still a lean, robust document that really can be used (and amended) as a framework to unite and govern many very different states as one country.

It's also clear that the document's purpose is to protect the people and their liberties from the tyranny of an overstepping government, although that's not always realized in practice. I would love to know what the framers who wrote the Constitution would think of the United States (good and bad) if they could observe it today.

Enjoyed reading the introduction and other commentary from President Ronald Reagan, Chief Justice Warren E. Burger, Senator Charles McC. Mathias, Jr., Honorable Thomas P. "Tip" O'Neill and Senator Robert Dole.

This is The Bicentennial Keepsake Edition, so any up-to-date ammendments are not included, but the inclusion of the comments from some well known political figures still makes this worth the read.
