Walde and the other Reachers struggle to restore one of the last great Mothertrees, their only link to the being deep in the earth, while enemies range against them. Without the Mothertrees, the Reachers' children cannot grow. This fact becomes personal when Walde discovers he will be a father.
This is such a great series. I wasn’t sure what I was getting into but so happy I came across these books. This is a fantasy book with humans with the power of reaching out to the trees. The battle for humanity’s soul is at stake. I can’t wait for the next one.

This is the 2nd audiobook in the Greyling series and it's as good as the first. It's very different to what I normally listen to but immersed myself in fantasy, you have the Reachers they are struggling as they get ready for battle to save the Mothertrees as without the trees the children would not grow and Wade finds out he is to be a father. Listening to this makes me feel like they are doing their bit to save the planet. Well written by WK Greyling and narrated by Arthur Morey, both of which are new to me.
It's difficult to write a review for this book without giving away spoilers. I would bet that if you're reading through the reviews you probably read the first book and liked it. Now you want to know if the second book is worth the read. IT UNQUESTIONABLY IS! Dig in, for you're about to encounter a book you might just read it in one sitting. I pretty much ended up doing that. The ending was also extraordinary
The fascinating tale of the Mothertrees continue...
The fascinating tale of the Mother trees continues... Can our heroes save the last vestiges of their dying culture, their way of life and keep their morality? Their sanity? Their lives? I am Compelled, I must know the outcome. I enjoyed this tale greatly.
In this second tale, Walde may have found a home, but his journey to find himself continues. A sweet love story ( no worries here this is not a romance novel) the tough truth about war, the bitter consequences of adult decisions are masterfully woven together by author and narrator in this excellent sequel.
Absolutely phenomenal series. I could not stop listening until the end. The storytelling was impeccable the narration and the characters were awesome as always.
Writing style doesn't change and continued to draw me in quite well. There were a number of complexities in this part of the story that kept me on my toes while thinking about the events and new characters. Over all a fascinating tale. I looked forward to W.K. Greyling's next adventure with anticipation.
I thought the introduction flowed nicely from book 1 to book 2. I loved how the relationship grew and flowered between the main characters. I thought the ending was hilarious and ingenious. I truly am looking forward to future novels from W. K. Greyling
I loved this duology. It was so original. It reminds me of Avatar in a way bc the ppl live in the Mothertrees and basically their whole culture/way of life revolves around the trees. Cool story
[Mild spoiler alert] This second (and final) book in Greyling's "Duology" reads like a second book in a trilogy. In it the characters get into a terrible predicament, even to the final pages of the book, with no resolution. Then the author slaps the most bizarre closure to the books--resolving the tension of the story as if by a magic wand. It leads the reader groping to understand what in blazes just happened. I still don't know. And too many questions remain unanswered. Deeply unsatisfying, and a bad ending to what I thought was a decent start in the first novel.
I keep searching for modern fiction that is worth reading. It isn't looking good. Any suggestions?
This book brings conclusion to the series as the group of Reachers must come to grip with what they are and how they will conduct themselves. This is brought about by others who would destroy them simply because they are different.
This brings strong emotions into play both for the Reachers and those who have aligned with them. It also brings out strong feelings in the listener.
The narration of these books was outstanding. The many voices and the emotions attached to each was well done.
This book was provided free of charge with the hopes of an honest review.
Welcome back to the world of the Mothertree. Life as they know it has officially been put in peril due to the greed of “Elders”. The Mothertrees are dying out, one by one, and the purges of the Reachers are only speeding that process up. Walde is tasked by the goddess of the Mothertree herself to protect the remaining trees while staying true to “who he is”. No problem, right? Regular Tuesday! No problem! Feelings have deepened and grown between Walde and Brite, love has bloomed like a Mothertree in its prime, could there be wedding vows floating on the winds?
Walde’s father is back as are the other remaining Reachers, but with small numbers and heavy trauma, the possibility of them being able to help Walde save the Mothertrees and in doing so, the world is unlikely at best. Throw in some Cursed Children, a fight for their lives, a brewing rebellion, and the Elder Council’s soldiers trying to hunt them down, and you’ve got a recipe for quite the adventure!
“Battle for the Woodlands” is the second and final (or is it?) book in the “Mothertree” series by W. K. Greyling and is spectacular. The world that the reader is brought into is both foreign and familiar, distant and close by, exciting and terrifying; it’s a seriously wild ride! The world-building is phenomenal, the story’s pace keeps the reader engaged and excited for the next steps in the plot, and the characters are deep, their struggles realistic, and the traumas something the reader feels in their soul. It’s a fantastic continuation (and maybe end?) of a must-read series!
I received a free copy of this e-book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Loved this new fantasy world created by W.K. Greyling. But, do not start with this book, back up and start with SILVER LIGHT. Greyling gives us a 2 book series, which is really 2 volumes that present one unified narrative. In this volume, Walde, a young man growing into his leadership role and powers, faces war and conflict as his people seek to protect the trees central to their lives. Read series in order. I liked this story and this new fantasy world and culture. But, I found myself wanting more descriptive detail. Thus, I say to the author, more descriptive adjectives and dependent clauses, please. Help us see, smell and enjoy your new worlds.
I found Battle for the Woodlands to be an amazing story. I did go into this without reading the first story however I did not find it very hard to figure out what was going on. The story had great pacing and like Greyling’s other works once I started I could not put it down till I finished it. I enjoyed the characters in this book. I did really enjoy Arthur Morey narration of this story. All in all I would recommend Battle for the Woodlands to anyone who likes fantasy stories or just good stories in general.
Wonderfully imaginative environment and set of characters, with a nicely developed plot. The mythology of the world seemed a bit puzzling at first, but great explanations filter in later in the novel creating lots of 'aha' moments. The ending was particularly inventive, but I'll say no more than that to avoid spoiling it.
And I want to know what happens next - there must be room for a third book in the series.
I wish the next book was already available on Audible so I can continue this adventure. Narrator again does a good job with the characters voices and the storyline. This author does a wonderful job of World Building a d I can not wait for the next book in this Series.
It's a nice duology. Maybe the ending is a bit open. It's a story about how we need to treat better the Nature and respect tradicional ways of life. The principal character is sweet, a good son, and trying to do things right.
What and adventure; what an ending! This books keeps you gripped from branch to branch as Wald tries to keep himself and others safe. Brilliantly written. How will i wait for the next piece??
This was a wonderful book!I can't wait for book 3! Arthur Morey was a terrific narrator.I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.'
The things that life will throw at you, that you totally don't expect, even as it gives, and takes, and changes you, are difficult to deal with. Walde is that character. Enjoyed this.
