It takes courage to be yourself and follow your dreams! Zoochies are creatures that come in two colors: purple and green. Purple Zoochies are great at math and are problem-solvers, whereas green Zoochies are performers and comedians. This is the way the Zoochies have always been! Suzie the Zoochie's dream is to be a comedian, despite the fact that she is purple and purple Zoochies aren't allowed to do comedy. For the annual stand-up comedy night, Suzie has a very brave plan.

If you’re talking to kids, tweens, or students about career readiness, personality traits, and tenacity, then I highly suggest this memorable book as the clever piece to cultivate some courage in color. As a result of the author’s toe-tapping rhyme schemes, this book exudes some major musical vibes similar to Nikki Giovanni and Shel Shilverstein but with twists of rainbows in its imagery and color symbolism. My kids grinned through all the perfectly paced pages, totally mesmerized by the fantastical art, magical setting, and silly but sensitive characters. In sum, this engaging book not only delivers loads of laughs but also excellent themes such as being true to oneself, dreaming big, and breaking barriers. I specifically want to now buy some merch with the author’s poignant line, “Why should color dictate my path?” In a world full of forced expectations and juxtapositions, my daughters and I really needed this mindful dose of courage in color. Curl up with such an entertaining but also educational book that glows with individuality, creativity, and life lessons.
We love make believe worlds. They spark creativity, they encourage curiosity, and they teach children to to make associations and connections between different scenarios- a core component of problem solving!
Zoochies by @picturebooksbyamit is a gorgeous tale of adorable forest dwelling creatures. A Zoochie’s role in society is determined base on their colour. That is until a plucky young Zoochie decides to follow her heart rather than the communities unfair rules.
It’s a good story for talking about the benefits of following your passion. It can also be used as a good tool to discuss prejudice in the world, especially for young children. Our discussion particularly focused on times when pretending to be someone else might not work.
My daughter was really taken with the main character and she enjoyed the illustrations. Lovely details on each page and a real classic feel throughout.
Zoochies have always been either green or purple; artistic or scientific. One zoochie doesn't quite fit that mold, however, so she makes up her mind to be true to herself no matter the cost.
Amit Rachman is truly a master of rhymes and creates a story that's fun to read and always makes me smile. The plot is fairly simple, but the wordcrafting makes this a delight to read to my kindergartners any day.
