Even with book apparently having had an editing pass since its original publishing date, I daresay it needs another one. I can’t believe the author reread the detailed descriptions of which interstates the various characters took to get to their next destination and thought, “yeah, that’s important context, that stays!” Not to mention the butchered French. The grandfather ends sentences with “n’est pas?” which translates to “is not?” Think the author was going for “n’est-ce pas” which means “is it not?” Victoria says “toot suite” instead of “tout de suite”, and the MMC calls the FMC “chèrie” instead of “chérie”, which funnily enough, if you know your French pronunciation, kinda makes it look like a phonetic spelling of someone saying chérie in an American accent. Americans love replacing stressed vowels with a schwa 😂

The MMC’s big romantic speech to the FMC is all jacked up:

“Je t’aimerai et je t’adoreas pour toujours. Vous êtes mon cœur et mon âme. Je partage mon éternité avec vous.”

“Je t’adoreas” I think is a typo for “je t’adorerai,” and he randomly switches from tu to vous like he forgot who he was talking to.

The book was jam-packed with excessive numbers of side characters and constant introductions in every single chapter, presumably because they’re planned to get their own romance in future novels, but it was bloody exhausting and felt so, so pointless. We met the MMC and his two sisters and their friends and the sister’s sorta-boyfriend and the sorta-boyfriend’s identical twin, and the MMC’s roommate and his grandparents and his mom and his uncle-stepdad and his sibling-cousins and his ex and his other ex and his fighting troupe. We met the FMC and her dad and her three brothers and her ex and her glassblower friend from way back. We met the shifters who run the saloon, the hotel receptionist and the pastry chef, the people who run the cafe and the natural soap shop, and the King of the Gray Court, whose job is apparently to meditate duels? Everybody is a ~cHArAcTer~ and everybody has to insert their opinions about the MCs’ fledgling relationship.

The FMC finds out she is pregnant within 24 hours of the intercourse happening, which is just… objectively false, as in, the sperm hasn’t had time to physically meet the egg yet, and the book just handwaves this minor detail with the excuse that it’s “fairy magic.”

On the upside, the book is honestly funny and cute, and I didn’t hate it. I just think it would’ve been a lot shorter if there wasn’t so many other characters stopping our two MCs from spending time together, and the romance that we got on the page was a little too CR for a PNR.

juvenile cinnamon roll

So much more could have been done with this. Tbh I wanted to DNF the book, but I am not a DNF’er. I have a major ick with men naming their genitalia so that instantly put me off to the book. The MMC had potential to be a panty dropper alphahole but between the juvenile inner monologue about his manhood and her body, along with the switch to a cinnamon the story fell flat for me. The climax off the book could have been ramped up more and drug out a bit to make it more exciting. I enjoyed the spunky FMC and how she was a badass undercover.
