In 1960 he became secretary of the Social Democratic Party of the Canton of Thurgau and editor of the Thurgauer Arbeiterzeitung. His breakthrough as a journalist came as an editor at the tabloid Blick from 1962 to 1969, where he worked as a reporter for the Middle East during the Six-Day War and during the Auschwitz trial in Frankfurt. In 1970, he moved to Diners Club magazine as editor-in-chief.
