This is a very short introductory book to the Well-Educated Heart homeschool philosophy, giving a brief history in storybook fashion of childhood education through the last 2 centuries. I like the general feel of her ideas, but I thought this introduction should have been just that: an introduction to a larger book. I feel like I need to purchase multiple smalls books when reasonably I should just be able to get one volume. I'm interested to hear more about her educational ideas.

The pages actually written by Marlene Peterson were fine. But the bulk of this book is “a brief tour of the history of education, as told in a book called Crusaders for Freedom.” This section I could barely tolerate. I imagine that author intended to be witty and conversational. I found his tone to be snarky and assuming of both the thoughts/feelings/intentions of the historical figures as well as myself as the reader (who he frequently refers to).

If you are interested in The Well Educated Heart—I recommend skipping this book and going straight to the Catch the Vision course at LibrariesofHope.com.

If only every mother would read this book.

More important than royalty, politicians, activists, instructors, doctors, media moguls and influencers is the well read, loving mother tending to the hearts, minds, bodies of her children.

In a world hellbent on destroying families, children and the mothers that lead them, this book stands (among others) as a sentinel, a warrior's call to mothers and a healing balm. It is a cry to refocus the most pivotal people in society - mothers - back towards their natural gifts around the heart. In doing so, they will mentor the hearts of their children.

This book collect some forgotten great thinkers on the topics of mothers, hearts, the arts and education.

"I have come to believe the purpose of education is to help children live lives of maximum joy" -- Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi

For those who have forgotten how to nurture their own heart, yet alone the hearts of others we are reminded that "the arts are the keys to soften and open hearts" but not just any art. The classic, beautiful, and uplifting art.

"The world is full of unworked joy-mines. Everywhere we go we find all sorts of happiness-producing material, if we only know how to extract it." -- Orison Swett Marden, Joy's of Living.
