Rate this book
A trailblazing figure in film and popular culture, Netherlands native Sylvia Kristel became one of the biggest stars in the world as Emmanuelle in 1974. Alongside her most famous role, directed by Just Jaeckin, a little-known fact is that Sylvia Kristel also appeared in over 20 films between 1973 and 1981 featuring exceptional work with some of the greatest directors in film history including Walerian Borowczyk, Alain Robbe-Grillet, Roger Vadim and Claude Chabrol. Now the story of Sylvia's astonishing career in the '70s is told in Sylvia  From Emmanuelle to Chabrol , written by Jeremy Richey. Featured are new interviews with Just Jaeckin, Pim de la Parra, Robert Fraisse, Joe Dallesandro and Francis Lai among others. Sylvia  From Emmanuelle to Chabrol is a film-by-film guide to one of the most distinctive and uncompromising careers in modern cinema, and a celebration of a most remarkable woman in a fully illustrated coffee-table book written by author Jeremy Richey.

A recollection of Sylvia Kristel's most exciting period as an actress. Beginning with her early Dutch film roles in Frank & Eva, Because of the Cats, and Naked over the Fence, this book covers all 22 movies Sylvia starred in between 1973 and 1981 including the European films Emmanuelle, Julia, No Pockets in a Shroud, Playing with Fire, Emmanuelle II, Une Femme fidele, La Marge, Alice, Rene the Cane, Goodbye Emmanuelle, Pastorale 1943, Mysteries, Tigers in Lipstick, The Fifth Musketeer, Love in First Class, Lady Chatterley's Lover, and the American films The Concorde…. Airport '79, The Nude Bomb, Private Lessons, plus a chapter on the unmade films, dozens of iconic roles that she was offered but declined written with in-depth detail by Jeremy Richey. Sylvia   From Emmanuelle to Chabrol also contains many vintage reviews and interviews with Sylvia Kristel never before translated into English, and takes a look at Sylvia's brief music recording career as well.

I am a huge fan of writer/blogger Jeremy Richey who I have known for years. I have always envied his extensive knowledge of foreign and domestic cinema, and his infectious celebration of the artistry only found in untainted, non-formulaic visionaries of classic film. One actress he has always loved is Sylvia Kristel-mostly known for her role as the licentious Emmanuelle in the most revered French erotic films of all time.

In Sylvia Kristel: From Emmanuelle to Chabrol Jeremy writes a steady and respectful tour through Sylvia’s film career, and gives you insight to the authors/ books and directors whose visions brought each of these, well known and obscure, films to life.

Although not touted as being a dive into her personal life Sylvia Kristel: From Emmanuelle to Chabrol gives you an understanding through interviews of both Sylvia and those who worked closely with her, how highly intelligent, funny, and talented she was.

Sylvia Kristel: From Emmanuelle to Chabrol is a masterpiece in my opinion, written with the same delicacy and visual exquisiteness as some of the erotic films it mentions.

I highly recommend this work of art and thank Jeremy for thoroughly introducing me to Sylvia, someone I’ve come to admire and whose films I will now watch with a freshened perspective.

In this expertly written tribute to an icon of sexually provocative erotic cinema, Dutch actress Sylvia Kristel’s life and career are painstakingly detailed and preserved with genuine admiration and respect, a dignified way to treat Kristel’s complex relationship with the role that defined her career. Featuring interviews with friends and collaborators, as well as a bounty of gorgeous ephemera including international posters, press material, behind the scenes photos, and profiles of the legend herself, an advocate for liberation and expression. A monumental undertaking to tell that story and Richey makes it look effortless. A triumph of cinema history.
