Shooting the Stickbow: A Practical Approach to Classical Archery

Rate this book
“Shooting the Stickbow” is the first comprehensive treatise on shooting modern recurves and longbow! Topics include equipment choices (bow, arrows, strings, shooting gloves and tabs, arm guards, arrow rests and sights), shooting form (proper anchoring, shoulder alignment, back tension, breathing and more), tuning (four methods are described and compared), aiming (five aiming methods are fully explained and contrasted), physical and mental aspects if becoming a proficient archer (functional anatomy for the archer and how it relates to shooting and the mental game of winning are discussed in detail and exercises are provided to enhance both physical and mental performance). “Shooting the Stickbow” answers the questions most often asked by new archers and delves into topics not often considered, but critical to accurate shooting for experienced archers.

This is a very useful book for beginning archers and folks with a few years under their belts alike. For the low price of the book and its unassuming presentation, it gives great and enduring value. Shooting the Stickbow is a useful, thoughtful, and easy to understand manual that teaches how to approach the sport of archery in terms of the physical, mental, and mechanical aspects. I would liken it to "Starting Strength" by Mark Rippetoe in terms of utility and quality of information, albeit a different topic.

Having corresponded with the author online numerous times, I can say that he is a generous, thoughtful, and kind individual, always happy to try and help anyone who wishes to take advantage of his expertise.

Highly recommended.

Reference book, not ideal to read cover to cover. Will have to go back and review sections depending on where I need help as I practice.

This is a great book. Well researched and well written. There is a wealth of information about equipment, shooting and aiming styles, set up and tuning, form, practice and arrow building. Only the most new, dedicated or fanatical archer would sit down and read this cover to cover but it's great value is as a one stop reference guide for most things "Barebow" and even a lot of "Tradbow" elements are covered.

I purchased the 1st edition many years ago and when the 2nd edition came out the author made the amendments and extra material available as a PDF download...that happens far too infrequently so kudos to Anthony.

I have just ordered the 2nd edition as I am just getting back into archery after a bit of a hiatus and just wanted to start with a nice clean copy that is waiting for me to underline and scribble new notes in the margins. Something I do with only the books I love or loath...this one is the former.

A modern archery classic that will become a all-time archery classic and a deserving addition to works such as Horace Ford's "Theory and Practice of Archery" for the archer's library.

Several very good hints (such as wand shooting). I will reread some parts in the future. But probably too exhausting.

This is the most comprehensive book on archery on the market today. If you are into archery, you won't be disappointed!!
