A brutal crime. A town shaken to its core. And the woman who saw it all...
For her entire life, Maureen has done nothing but run. Run from her past, run from her nightmares. But when she finds herself intertwined in the investigation of the brutal murders of two young boys, her dreams may hold the key to helping a struggling detective find justice.
Note: I was provided a copy of this novel by my local bookstore in exchange for giving them my honest opinion of it.
Unholy Shepherd feels like a cleaned up first draft of a book. Apart from some run-ons, the grammar and spelling are fine, but as far as the story, the dialogue, and the overall writing, it needs a lot of work. It almost feels like this was being written with the author trying to hit the goal of a specific word count. It makes for blocky sentences and unnecessary filler words; not any polish. On top of that, the plot is predictable, the love angle feels forced, and there are inconsistencies throughout that pulled me from the story. Overall, there was not much that worked for me.
This is the intriguing first book of the Demon Sight series! It's not quite like anything I've ever read before, which is a great thing. At its core a crime thriller, the story focuses on a woman named Maureen, unwillingly gifted with the "Demon Sight," a type of real-time premonition shared by those committing unholy acts in her vicinity. This has vibes of "True Detective" and Christian has a knack for evocative descriptions, elevating all the scenes with interesting quirks. I'd recommend it (+16).
