Book 2: Thanksgiving.

Jesse has returned from from a brutal stretch in a Nevada prison, but struggles to rejoin “normal” family life in California, burdened by unresolved bereavement and post-traumatic stress. His sister reaches out to him by way of a rescued horse in need of similar healing. Jesse travels to the impoverished mining town of his childhood to discover something of the horse’s past, and to seek out Ruth, left alone after the deaths of Thea and Deborah. His siblings travel with him, and each, in their own way, comes to a deeper understanding of their new brother.

This is the perfect second part of the Trail Markers series. In contrast to the first part, Thanksgiving has less action and more introspection. This is the internal journey of a phsically and mentally traumatized hero trying to find himself again while he fights the demons inside his head.
The story is cleverly crafted and very well written. It has a lot of pain but also a lot of beauty and it's heartwarming in many places.
Jesse still has a long way to go, and there are still some loose ends here, so I'm excited to see what the third and final part of this story has to offer.
For anyone who likes western, literary fiction and stories full of heart, I highly recommend Thanksgiving and the whole series.

So, I am definitely hooked. Thanksgiving, while much less graphic than Trail Markers is one very well written saga depicting the psychological strife that Jesse encounters on his journey of battling his demons. Particularly heartwarming are the ties that bind this family( blood and non blood).
Aros' further delving into the psyche of the characters is both introspectional and encouraging for those of us that need to believe that " family" is your tribe. Eagerly awaiting NOX!!

Cym Aros leaves us in no doubt that she loves her characters. Deeply. She draws such intimate details of their grief, their passions, their regrets, and their struggles that you feel like you know them. You WANT to know them. Well enough to tear-up at their losses, their profound acts of love, and acts of painful self-discovery (which, indeed, I did). The latter was actually one of my favorite things about this book—how certain characters had a-ha moments about the pain their actions (or lack of action) may have caused, and how they bravely made amends, each in their own way.

Love is the theme that runs strongest through this tale of PTSD, recovery and family. But grace occupies a formidable position in the drawing of these characters. And courage--not to be outdone--demands you to see how it soars in the company of both.

I wonder about this author. She understands difficult things about human nature, both good and evil. Wisdom threads through this well-told story effortlessly, as though that very quality is the ink that flows from her pen.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the powerful role the women of this story had in developing boys into formidably strong yet compassionate adult men. They all led fiercely through their own pain and loss, through courage and love. They are revealed in the blistering forge of life. Choices made.

Excuse me while I go finish all the tasks that were ignored while I read this book.

I didn't realize this was part of a series. The book itself stood alone very well. I usually stick to more supernatural/fantasy reads, but the author's writing style and the emotional connections of the book drew me in. I like very character centric stories and the author has that down to a science. No spoilers, but there is a lot to work through in the book: healing, discovery, and growth. Absolutely recommend for contemporary psychological fiction readers.
