In the ancient world, covenant-making was common. There were two kinds of the Party Covenant and Suzerainty Covenant. The Party Covenant was an agreement between two equal partners, a bilateral contract affecting both sides equally. The Suzerainty Covenant was an agreement between a king and his subjects, a unilateral contract. God’s agreements with man are of the suzerainty nature. God tells man all the blessings that He will bestow upon those who submit to divine rule. Deuteronomy 28 is an example of the promise of keeping the covenant and the curse of breaking it. You may find your faith strengthened as you see that the strength of covenants depends on the character of those who make them. Indeed, God’s covenants are powerful because He is eternal, almighty, righteous, and perfect in holiness.
